Title: Safes and what they contain
Post by: MovieMan on January 26, 2011, 01:36:48 PM
In 7 years I've gotten about that many safes and here are some clues about them according to my experience. Your finds may be different.

5 of the 7 were empty. The little (typewriter size) cases usually have some important papers in them, but are often empty. Sometimes anxious parents keep their sex toys in safes.

1 good safe (about 2' by 18" by 18" I had the bottom torched and then broke out the concrete lining to get inside.
This one had about $375 in jewelry and coins.

2nd good safe was smaller and had about $200 in jewelry and coins.

Note: both good safes were in the back of their lockers buried under other goods. Little safes up front are almost always empty.

I bought a unit with a small safe in it today, and when we shook it it made some noise inside.  I was pretty happy, because 9 out of 10 times they are totally empty!  Anyway, we got it open, and lo and behold, the entire contents were:  1 Crack Pipe, 2 *****s, and some Baseball cards.  Had to think for a minute about which thread to post this in! ;D

I doubt if the cards are worth much.  It did have a washer and dryer though.  I paid 400.00 for the unit, and some other auction attendees purchased the washer and dryer right after the auction for 150.00!  I only had to help push them into the back of their trailer and don't have to store them or try to sell them now!

It's comical how crazy people get at an auction when there is a safe in locker.  The bidding gets outrageous on the hopes and dreams of riches.  Rationality goes right out the window.

I got a safe a few weeksago. In that one there was check books, papers, owners manuals, 2 complete Windows XP pro edition. And a empty jewelry box.

So nothing exciting, except the two Windows XP software.

yup, but it is why I value you the unit on what I can see, and depending on what I dont see (like boxes totes and everything else that keeps things under wrap) I will gamble another 5 - 30% more on my original value of the unit, and not exceed that when bidding. Has worked for me so far.

Got one today; paid accordingly for 10 x 10 lkr and am comfortable with other items paying for lkr and making some money....safe will be gravy.

Will follow suggestions from a variety of forum users regarding this brand.

Here's the Sentry link for getting combination/keys.

https://www.sentrysafe.com/CustomerCare/Lost_Your_Combination

You can download it online; print it, get it filled out, notarized and you can even fax it back to them, making it only an hour or so task (faster than snail mail).  If you just get combination, it's $20; keys (2) provided for an additional $15.

My safe only used a combination (rotary dial).  Chances are pretty good I think that most users won't change the combination, but we'll see.

The link below takes you to the thread where my NEWLY OPENED safe pictures are shown.

Like the safe opened by Jeraldo Rivera (formerly owned by Al Capone), there were not great riches inside.

The 1986 Geraldo Rivera show about finding and cracking Al Capone's safe is well documented on Wikipedia among other sites. It was a 2 hour long show, and could have been an hour long or even 30" and still done the job.

Here's a pic of the crime boss's safe:

If at all possible, I will try and get the combination or the key and save the safe intact.  This is another item to keep or sell. 8)

I find safes pretty regular in my units. Roughly 70% are empty. Fireboxes are general junk -- misc. paper work ... One of the recent ones I found had roughly $1k in gold/silver melt in it, along with a Marijuana growing handbook --- funny thing is that I found more gold/silver in a trash bag in the same unit than was actually in the safe.

Found a 100 year old safe month or two back, also in photos -- it was open, and empty, but made some nice dollars off of it.

Check out this link for the "loading ceremony" of a gun safe I sold Nov 1, 2011.

Pics of the move start at reply #162 I think.

Got another Sentry safe in my last locker for $825. I didn't bid that high because it was showing, but because of the overall quality of the locker and the POSSIBILITY there might be something good in the safe.

I used the Sentry method of getting the combination (just do a search for "safes" and you'll see the threads here) and got it open 24 hours after I obtained it.

In the little black drawer inside it had 7 "silver" rings. Only one turned out to be silver with a couple of little bracelets as well...$48 at the "gold" shop I go to.

Safes are fun and if you get enough of them and they have some size to them, they can pay off.

Right now I have three, two of which I got at auctions, 3rd at estate sale .... need to sell two of them !

Reviving old thread alert!  >:(

Can you get keys and combos from other safe makers besides Sentry, or is Sentry the only manufacturer that provides that service and you just have to have the safe picked or cut?

Can you get keys and combos from other safe makers besides Sentry, or is Sentry the only manufacturer that provides that service and you just have to have the safe picked or cut?

The Sentry safes (IMO) seem to be the most prevalent in the lkrs we get simply because they are relatively inexpensive and available at places like Wal-Mart, etc.

The other larger, heavier-duty safes I have gotten include the STAR brand (probably absorbed by someone from what I remember researching them) and I have taken those to a locksmith. In my area they typically charge $75 but I have taken enough in to one outfit that I think they are charging me more in the $50 range and if keys are needed along with the combo, that's included.

The gun safe I had done (they came to the lkr) cost $300 (maybe $313 or something for the labor and a new combiantion lock) and my discount on the little ones I took to them came after that.

So, I don't know if other brands provide that same combination/key help the way Sentry does, but safes can pay off sometimes (see the other thread).
