Sounds pretty decent for the price.  Were the cases visible or hidden in a box?  Must have been hidden or it would have sold for 2k plus!  How many people showed up at your auction today?

West / Stupid in Seattle!
« on: February 16, 2011, 09:19:27 PM »
So tonight at 5:00 PM was a Pod style auction.  These were containers from a moving company, small boxes full of household goods that for whatever reason, the owners did not pay the bill and they are getting auctioned off (just like the storage lockers).  Well, this company decided to spam their auction all over craigslist.  Here is the body of the ad they were running:

You've seen it on cable TV's "Storage Wars" and "Auction Hunters". Now see it live in Seattle. Abandoned Storage Auction: Hansen Bros./PortaBox is auctioning off approximately 20 units of abandoned/delinquent storage. Each vault can contain up to 2000 lbs of storage. Customers usually store general household items including furniture, clothing, tools, collectibles and kitchen items. Lots of unusual items. We'll cut the locks off and open the doors before bidding begins on each vault. Entire contents (excluding pads) of the vault of storage are auctioned off for one price. Arrangements can be made for delivery of the container.

Sounds pretty good, huh?  BS!  Over 100 treasure hunters showed up, as well as one of the local TV stations and local newspaper.  1800-2200 prices for multiple units that happened to belong to the same person.  Stupid and a waste of time.  There was pushing and shoving and a bunch of idiot's wanting to be on tv.  What a bunch of crap!  Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

I haven't had insurance for a couple of years.  One of the "benefits" of being self employed!  LOL!  I can get on my wife's, but it's way too expensive.  I have been looking at some of the Costco stuff and a friend was telling me about a plan he has that doesn't cover normal Dr. visits but covers catastrophic illnesses.

I'm not buying like that every week though.  Only average 12-14 most months.  This month got a few more.  Not quite making 100k either, but I'm doing what I want to do when I want to do it and I don't have to go sit in some little cubicle all day doing what somebody tells me to do.  My biggest expenses (other than taxes!) are lockers, gas (averages around 700 a month) and warehouse rent.  Other than that, not a lot of expenses and I try to keep my overhead low and live "within my means".

Dang. Couldn't you have posted this last week; I've been tossing and turning wondering about this !  ;D

I just KNEW somebody was, but I didn't think it would be you!  Sorry! ::)

I see the "wow" factor in the majority of the lockers.  They open the door and I go "WOW, look at all that CRAP"!

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Weekend Auctions?

I have a rare Saturday auction this week, but I'm thinking it's going to be a waste of time.  They've had it advertised on their reader board for the last month.  But, I'm still going, because you just never know!

........... when tied into the tv shows as a GUARANTEED way to make at least $1k on EVERY locker you buy.  ;D

What, you don't?  ???  Dammit!  Time for me to find a new career!

Oh, and the income tax refund thing is a double edged sword.  What about all those people perusing my CL ads that got their tax refund and now are buying my stuff!!

Sweet!  Stuff like that is usually pretty easy to sell, and you might even make more than you would have on the gun anyway!

Just so you guys don't have to lose any sleep wondering about this, I'll fill you in a little bit on my buying "habits".

I have purchased 18 lockers in the last three weeks.  Not a single one was a 10' or 12' x 30', which are my favorites.  Most of them were 10'x10', along with a few 5'x10' and one was a 10'x20'.

I partnered up on about half of them, and the rest I bought alone.

Three of them were VERY good.  Three others were VERY bad!  The rest were all acceptable and I am very happy with my purchases overall.

Space is ALWAYS a problem.  I try to get this stuff to my shop and processed and gone as fast as possible.  Doesn't always go as planned, and I have a bunch of stuff in there that I haven't had a chance to sort as much as I'd like yet.

I have a 7'x14' trailer, and I can usually cram a couple of 10x10's in there, unless they are totally packed or have a bunch of big furniture.  I will usually buy a few units, and then make the rounds with my trailer and get them cleaned out.  Sometimes, I will rent one for a month if it's a big unit and they have it on the "dollar special".  I just cleaned out the last one of those this morning as a matter of fact!

I LIVE this lifestyle!  It's what I do all the time.  I usually work 7 days a week.  I'll go to early auctions and late auctions, and I'm usually posting stuff late at night on CL.  I'm constantly moving and sorting stuff, trying to make enough room for the next round of auctions.

The next round of auctions for me starts tomorrow afternoon with a Pods auctions.  Then, I have single auctions on Thursday, Friday, and a rare Saturday one.  Then, every day next week I will be on a "run" where a large company has many facilities and they start at one and will go to 8-12 facilities each day with anywhere from 1-6 units at each facility.

By the time next Friday rolls around, I hope to have roughly 8-10 lockers.  Again, things don't always go to plan, and I may end up with fewer, or I might get lucky and things are going reasonable and I'll get them cheap and end up with more.

Oh yeah, and I typically spend anywhere from 150-400 a piece for the majority of my lockers.  The most expensive one I've ever personally bought was 1200, but I have bid up to 4800 on one but didn't get it.  I have only actually lost money on three, but I have had a few where I worked my ass off just to break even.  I have no problem spending the money on a locker if I see something in there that I feel I can get my money back on.  I don't buy a unit just to "show off"!  This is all about making money for me, and if I want to gamble, I'll head to the casino and play blackjack!

He doesn't sound like someone who will be in the business for long.  He's either going to piss everybody else off and never get a cheap unit, or he's going to blow all his cash on crap units.  I love people that blame everyone else for their stupidity and greed!
