Stores / Re: If you could, would you open a resale shop?
« on: February 14, 2015, 07:20:56 PM »
I did, but I am now going to close it after 2+ years. It was much more profitable having yard sales and selling online. Im going back to grassroots soon!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Do you employ your family members?
« on: July 26, 2014, 08:59:33 PM »
My daughter (she is 21) works at the store during the week while I work my other job! She is suppose to be posting ads on Craigslist and Facebook while she is there, but it has been like pulling teeth to get her to. She said to me last week she wasnt the only one that can put ad's on, I could too...sure I said, but I am the only one paying the bills, working 2 jobs and buying ALL the product for the store. Its times like that family can be frustrating!!   Although I should note I started this business with my brother in law who quickly became a know it all a$$hole and abruptly left the business after 9 months with the bank account, so I guess I'm doing better now.....  :41:

Stores / Re: Store Fixtures
« on: June 24, 2014, 08:14:58 PM »
When I opened my first store I walked up and down the street talking to all the other local store owners daily ( I lived in walking distance) and told them what I was doing. Before you know it people were either leading me in the direction of stuff I needed or giving me a few things to get started! That was about 12 years ago, the town I live in has a small town feel to the downtown area and people get to know one another. This time when I opened my second store I lucked out and rented a store with most of the fixtures already there I needed and just bought them off the previous owner.

our local Salvation Armys can be overpriced too, but other times I have gotten good deals. I just got an Ethan Allen couch, looked a bit vintage, clean as a whistle, for $49.00 ( I needed one for a semi permanent house guest) other couches which were a bit grungy, no name, circa 1990's were going for $125.  Of course I got a unit today with a vintage couch in it, I havent finished cleaning the unit out but I think it looks similar to the one I bought! If only I waited 3 days....

yes, there is one near mine, they have mainly average household stuff ( I do too, but I also have collectibles, antiques and unique items) anyways....their stuff is so over priced it is laughable! The product never moves...example a 5 ft. 8 inch wide plant stand..$88 dollars, I sell better ones for $19.75 and they fly out the door. They have used hats $25 dollars...used!!! two wine glasses that clearly came with a bottle of wine (nothing special) $11. I can hardly move them for .75 cents each.....everyone in town thinks they are ridiculous! (and the place smells like someone is smoking cigarettes in there, I quit last December so I know its not so hard to go outside for a butt!) They are also selling dollar store items...brushes, baggies, toothbrushes elastics, pencils and such for top dollar. I stop in there for time to time for a good laugh.

Stores / Re: How are your stores doing?

My store has been slow the last few months. The traffic is starting to pick up and hopefully with the nicer weather things will turn around.

Storage Facilities / Re: Reasons people lose their storage unit

I feel like I've gotten a few "single mom's" unit, and they can't afford their apartments any longer...it is sad, especially when you find alot of well cared for children's clothes and toys.

My 13 yr. old son "collects" Alf stuff, has been for about 7 years now! He also collects Beatles memorabilia, vintage Muppets and video games. Thanks to what I do he seems to find something to fulfill one of the collections often enough. (He has Aspergers syndrome so an idea or collection can become a fixation for him)  I was watching Alf recently and had forgotten how funny he was!

I thought auctionguy was being sarcastic thats why I didnt answer him, lol. If he wasnt then my answer is similar to Travis', I also have a Wothpoint app or I just google the item. I guess I was kinda flip about my "crock pot" crack, I do have to look stuff up, and I have had a few knowledgeable friends look at stuff for me. Once I got stage production equipment so my son's drum teacher came and looked at the speakers for me. I also have a friend who is an expert in the field of early American folk art and antiques, so he has been handy to have around at times...

I've been lucky with the small units. I only go to auctions about once a month, try to get along with everyone and not be a unit hoarder or drive up prices so I feel the regulars throw me a bone and let me get the small furniture units for my store at times without bidding me up. There seems to be a wave of newbies often enough, but I find most are just checking it out, or they get buried quick...

General Storage Auction Talk / "storage wars/hunters' vs.my reality
« on: March 23, 2014, 04:22:22 PM »
me: "I buy storage units at auction..."
others:"I watch those shows ALL the time!"
me:"the shows dont really 'show' what its all about...dump runs, mice poop, live mice (ive battled a few)gross stuff, food, mattress's,ex large 1980-90 TVs nobody wants, dirty laundry, and more gross stuff, lucky to double my money..."
others" Ive always wanted to do this..."
me: "why?'
others"whats the best thing you found?'
me:"stuff i could sell..."
i guess I am getting jaded, it is still the best way to buy in bulk for me right now, I have a resale store. I wish it wasnt so "glamorized"...Im not running stuff to appraisers...I know what a crock pot goes for, lol.

I got a unit with some cute stuff! (I added a pic because I really just wanted to see if I could, I couldn't reduce the size before, but I think I figured it out now!) I only paid $100, it was a small apartment unit, but everything was clean and of good quality, no mattress, or dump runs with this one!
