What would YOU have paid for this 70s Pontiac ?
« on: June 01, 2011, 09:35:29 AM »
I'm not a "car guy" so I don't bid on these, but I'm wondering what any of the bidders here would have paid for this 1970's Pontiac with NO ENGINE. Interior OK, forgot to look at transmission type.

Im not much of a car guy either. However giving that this a classic, with some prestige, but with NO ENGINE. I wouldnt have gone higher than $600 for it. Unless I was a car collector that loves to restore, then I probable would go as high as $1,500.

How much did it go for? And I see alot of dust, how long has it been there, 10 Years?

This being a Formula 400 brings value to a Pontiac Fan. I my self have had several GTO's. If I was a Firebird Fan or thought I could turn around and make a quick buck I would not hesitate to bid up to $2000.00 for this car. If it had the engine a 400 CID then I might go as high as $4500.00 as there is still a Market out there for this type of Muscle Car.

Note if it has a factory 4 speed I may have gone a bit higher.

What was the final Bid?

jross and gravell...

Thanks for your thoughts!  It sold (twice) within half an hour...first time was $400....there was a misunderstanding about it and it went up again. This time went for $325. NOTE: the guy who bought it the first time WAS BIDDING the 2nd time but stopped at $300...I think this was a "flaky" deal. See more details on that transaction at the lookey loos #5...May, 2011 thread.

Anyone else feel free to tell what you would have paid. The first two posters here were off each other by a fair amount.

Ya that sounds very flaky, like he was there just to run the bid up.

If they got it for $325.00 then they got one hell of a bargain!

They did good on that. Cars like that sells for between 1000 and 2000 bucks easy, in that condition.

Put 25 000 into it and sell it for 45-50 000 easy.

Man, I would have had to change my underwear if I got that unit for $325.

If the rest of the car looks as good as the front clip, even without an engine and transmission, it would sell within less than a week for upwards of $2k.  I would have gone to a wrecking yard, bought an engine for it for about $500, and posted it for $3200 obo if I did not install the engine.  If I installed the engine, I would post it for at least $4500 after a good bath, and it would sell.

I see the buyer on a regular basis at auctions so I will ask him as time goes by what the final results are.

Looking back on it, I could have bought it and just sold it as is right out of the locker which I could have rented.
If everyone's opinion about this is true, it would have been (or will be) a nice money maker....just not for me!

Talked to the buyer today; he said he had also discovered he could get $1500 to $2K for the car...hasn't listed it anywhere yet. He hauled it home, so his costs are only $325 so far...said he would go through dmv to get title to get more bucks I would guess.

Yup, will be worth a lot more money titled than untitled.

Getting titles here in TX is pretty easy.  All it pretty much takes is making sure its not a stolen car, then getting a bill of sale from the last person who had possession of it.  Take the bill of sale to the dmv and fill out the paperwork to have a title hearing.  About 4 weeks later you will have the title if there are no issues.

The auctioneer actually allowed you guys to open the doors????  Wow.  I would have went up to around 1200 personally.  My brother is a huge muscle car fan.  I am more into the import scene.

700-800 wouldn't have bothered me.  My oldest son is a mechanic, and I could have given him a grand to find and install a 400 engine, and he knows a ton of people that are into muscle cars, probably could have sold it for 5k fixed, with little effort.  Of course, he'd have been driving the hell out of it in the meantime.
