My cheapest unit yet.

My cheapest unit yet.
« on: July 22, 2013, 11:04:29 PM »
I got one today for 10 dollars, 10.60 with tax, my cheapest ever.  There is alot of potential, but this is the most interesting.
Any help on ID will be appreciated.  Thanks

It's got potential. But after hiring an upholsterer and refinishing the wood, it doesn't seem like there will be a lot of room for profit. Maybe I'm wrong though.

How much are you going to ask for it once it has been restored? $200? $250? for the bench and maybe $100-125 for the chair?

Need more info to determine age.   Any hardware?  Screws, nails?
The casters look like they were added or original?
Any markings? Tags? Stamps?

Can't say how much it would be to redo.   Upholstery by itself I could get done for $300-$400 for really nice material, work.   But....that's just upholstery.  Looks like they would need to totally rebuild base, springs.   No clue on cost for that.  We had a old 1940's Ford bench seat rebuilt and it was close to a grand.  Best comparison I have....

Then there is the woodwork.   That's cheap to do yourself but resell will be more if done professionally.
Again, never had that done so don't know cost.

Anyway, without knowing anything about it, just going by pics, I've seen somewhat similar sets sell for $1200+
I think the prices you threw out would be what I'd ask in present condition and negotiate down.

Just don't go sanding on it without doing some research.   You might devalue it.  Just vacuume, pledge or wipe down with damp cloth to show it as-is.

Judging the pics, I'd say you're about at a break even depending on what avenues you have to sell. At a flea market, or on craigslist, these pieces MAY go for $600-$700 in a best case scenario. Looking at that first pic, that parlor bench needs a full restoration, assuming the chair is in the same situation, it's going to cost you about what you'll garner for the set. You may be better off flipping it for a quick $150-$200 to someone looking for a restore project to keep.

Of course, more information would be excellent. I'm thinking the 2 pieces are from the 40s-50s. Restored, it'll be a fantastic set! It looks like the wood is in decent shape, and like Alias said, don't do anything until you know what it is! If you get the upholstery done, work on the structure and leave the wood distressed, you'll be in a safe position to sell and not damage or devalue the furniture.

Sometimes you just never know what you will get.  "storage units are like opening Pandoras box, you never know what you will get".

I have found out a little more on this set.  It is 1860-1880 regency parlor set.  There are 3 pieces, The settee and his and hers arm chairs.  The tufted leather and wooden casters are original.  American made.

Worth around 3-500 in its current condition. Restored between 1500 and 2000.
