Storage Auctions

Hello from Massachusetts

Hello from Massachusetts
« on: August 22, 2011, 01:51:04 PM »
Greetings, all. I live about 20 miles west of Boston. Have been going to auctions since February or March. Have purchased 16 units so far. I work this business with my brother and a friend of his helps with the heavy lifting.

Sometimes I love furniture since it's a quick transaction to make a good dollar. Then, we'll have too much furniture and I'll start looking out for boxes, especially collectibles. No crazy good finds yet,

I really enjoy the digging and research that's required to learn about the items we find to maximize our returns. For instance, I now know more about pre-prohibition beer bottles than I ever thought I would. The more we learn, the better we'll be able to evaluate storage units at auction.

I started a blog to write about my experiences. It's called storageunitspelunking.blogspot.com.

Hi and welcome.

I have a question for you though. Here in probable about 2 years I am planning on moving to New Bedford. Or a 30 mile radius from New Bedford. How are the auctions up there. I notice you said you were pretty much in the Boston area, but even insight from that region of Mass may be informative for me.

Thanks

Jross - thanks for the welcome. New Bedford is pretty far afield for me, so I haven't been to an auction that far south of Boston. But, I'm able to find lots of auctions within a 30 minute drive from where I live, many of them in reasonably affluent areas.

There are two auction companies that handle virtually all the auctions in New England. The first is Storage Auction Solutions (the auctioneer owner is the auctioneer in the 2 Auction Hunter episodes that were in the Boston area). Their calendar is at: storageauctionsolutions.com/Calendar/index.htm. I didn't see too many auctions in your neck of the woods, but I'm not sure how far you're willing to drive. Storage Auctions USA, I see, has 6 auctions tomorrow that are in or near New Bedford. Their calendar is at: storageauctionsusa.com/auction_schedule.cfm.

I think if you check out the calendars side by side to a map, you'll get a good idea of how far you'd need to drive to take in auctions regularly.

Monkey Business - thanks for the welcome!

well like I said it is something I am thinking about doing. And depending on how the bids are going I may be willing to drive all teh way to Boston like once a month. But was hoping I would be able to stay closer to where I want to move to. My family came to New Bedford and a few of the other close by towns during hte early part of the 1900s from Portugal. So I have always wanted to check it out. Still got some family there in Mattapoiset, New Bedford, Martha's Vineyard, and Acushnet.

Thanks for the compliment on my blogs.

You can also hit Providence Ri. and Taunton Ma. from there pretty easy .
The Biggest problem that You will have is Joe , He and his crew's  hit and buy all the auctions in that area , and have for a long time , he always had it in his auctions , and pointed out to You what items came from what lockers  if he saw you at the auction and knew you .                                                                                                                    He has  now jumped on the band wagon and is advertising  where His stock comes from  and has a special auction every  week for there storage locker inventory only .
