Furniture Selling

Hey guys,
Enjoy coming here all the time and reading what everyone has to say. Got a question, purchased a unit off someone about 6 weeks ago and it has some furniture pieces. Only issue is I have not been able to sell them yet. Tried craiglists for a bit and the market there seems really flooded. Any suggestions?

You can try http://www.ebayclassifieds.com/ this is the classifides for ebay.

Also i would try to put up some sales flyers around in your local neighborhood. At your local store, gas station and so on. Also try to post it on CL but in a town&place close to you. If you have tried in your own town, try the next town closest to you.

I havn't sold much or checked out my furn on craigslist as of late but in the past it moved pretty easily. If its not moving its probably priced too high.

Things may have slowed down overall though. I had a guy from cl over at my place to buy a bamboo chair. He wound up buying a bunch of plates and cookware from me and inquired about my roomates couch in our gargage which my roomate wasn't even wanting to sell. I told him I'd ask my roomate.

He wound up offering $100 and I laughed at him as the couch is a year old most of that time been in a couch bag in my garage. he then said he's been watching cl and nothing is moving and offered $200.

In the past when you could pick up units for $35 with nice furniture it was easy, try to get top dollar and if your stlll sitting on it a few weeks later let it go dirt cheap and still make a buck. With many unit prices inflated or when buying second hand you risk getting into it at a price where you either gotta sit on stuff forever waiting for the right price or you don't make all your money back.

People on CL are looking for a deal, but two things really help.  One, is that timing is key.  It seems that CL sales really pick up from around the 3rd of the month until around the 15th.  Most government checks come on the 3rd, so those people have their money for the month.  Second, PICTURES, PICTURES, PICTURES!  Don't be a BOZO!  Take good pictures and your stuff will sell a lot easier!  I don't even look at ads without them, and if something looks crappy in the pictures, it's usually worse in person.

Totally agree with the pictures. I search with the picture button clicked so if you don't got pics I'm not even gonna look at your listing.

Take good pics as well, can't understand these idiots who take the time to take a pic but take a pic with all the lights off where you can vaguely make out the silouette of a couch...lol.

One other tip I would give is leave a phone number to be contacted and select the option where there is no email address at the top.

People who email instead of calling aren't as serious. It often turns into playing 20 questions, people are more comfortable offering ridiculously low prices since it's less personal and you get lots of people who say they are interested and then never return a phone call or email. On the phone you can potentially set up a deal 10 minutes from when you talk to the person where as email you may email someone they email you backthe following day you dont check your email for a day so then you get back to them, etc.

I do have some pictures for the pieces and I made sure to say I can supply more upon request. I thought my luck changed with two ppl inquiring about one piece. The first one didn't reply back and the second one changed their mind upon seeing more pictures.

I guess the issue I really have is trying to sell some furniture that is slightly banged up. I got an antique or two that the original owner had but she did not really take care it too well.

I probably need to lower my demands take a somewhat loss for this unit and move on to another smaller cheaper one.

yea I understood that coming in, actually my biggest mistake was buying this unit off of someone. She was in debt and wanted to rid the stuff. I do actually enjoy this somewhat and would be interested in continuing this part time but I will never buy a unit to help someone out again.

furniture is not selling right now. Look at this way. Foreclosures are at all time high. Means people have a house they can't afford. Which gave them credit to go out and buy furniture they could not afford.
When they had to move out of the house they put the furniture into a storage unit. and now they can afford to pay for the storage unit. lots of used furniture. most of the used furniture stores(guys in this business) are starting to offer lay-away plans.
And don't even ask about washers and dryers. CL for free if you come and haul them away.
