How do you deal with stuf that requires a title to sell?

Suppose you buy a locker that contains an automobile, a boat( greater than 14 ft or with motor), or an outboard motor. In Texas, technically, all these require a title to transfer. Is the storage business required to obtain a title prior offering it for auction?

Once again, use search button above, or are you setting us up for a link to your Java writing service; if so, just post your PLUG in the appropriate thread (if you can find it without asking) !

I just get tired of people not wanting to do even the most MINIMAL of work on their own. How much effort does it take to do a search? Hardly any.

If they can't do that here, how are they ever going to research the value of something?

AND, I may be wrong about this fellow just posting a few innocuous notes BEFORE he hits us up with Java service, and I will be the first to admit it if I am wrong, but I've done it before over the last 11 months and I don't recall being wrong, but I might have been and didn't know it, and there's always a first time.

I get this out in the real world when people I know learn that I buy and sell storage units. They get all like, "well I want to do that too, why don't we do it together." Now in my head I'm going yeah right okay sure. But at the same time, I'm always willing to give someone a chance to see if they can bring something to the table. So now what I do is tell them to go find out all they can about storage unit auctions and we'll get together in a week and talk about it. Every single time after the week goes by and I've ask what they've found out, it's always "I didn't get a chance to look into it yet." To which I reply, "so you want me to do 95% of the work for 50% of the money...no thanks." That always seems to keep them off my back.

Thank you for your gracious welcome to a newbie.

For those of you who have been on this forum for a while, it may be intuitive as to how to get information, but it is not obvious to me.

As for my user name, it refers to me being a high school computer sicence teacher. I don't offer or provide any "service" to anyone for Java writing, although, if your kids need help with their comp sci homework, I think that I can spare a moment to give a courteous response.

Movieman: Thanks for the suggestion regarding the search button. If I am unsuccessful in locating  the information I seek, I may PM you (if that is possible in this forum).

As a computer science teach at the high school level I'm sure you've talked to students about doing research and the computer tools for doing it...and the satisfaction achieved by doing that work yourself.

As to providing a courteous response to a newbie's request, consider my response as "tough love"...this is nothing compared to the reality of the auction world, both dealing with old-timers many of whom will not suffer newbies lightly in their many questions.  It is also tough love as regards the hard physical work involved.

There are other teachers on these forums, some of whom do a bit on their off-class time and in the summers if they are not teaching then.

Teaching is a respected profession (at least in my book) and you are admired for doing that. Now do right by this "profession" as well and you will truly be welcome here...by me...and others.

In case you don't do the search....and most questions have been answered more then a few times, the answer is simple -- you don't.

Most places will not sell a car / boat / titled item even if it's in the storage unit.  It's like booze - they are suppose to remove the items from the locker.  Items like handguns and such - the laws range.  In california if it can be seen then the facility / auctioneer is to remove it and turn it over to a registered dealer.  Then the new locker owner can do the paperwork, pay money, etc. to get the firearm.  In Georgia I'm not sure of if a firearm is open to view if they would remove it or not.  I do know you don't have to register any found firearms.

If the vehicle or such can be purchased as part of a unit, then you should be able to do a salvaged title as abandoned property.  It's the same processes that you do when you buy a vehicle at one of the repair shop auctions.  Or if you purchase property at auction and a vehicle is still on the property.

Most people just part out the motorcycles and such they find.  Not heard of anyone that has found a car/boat yet.

Most Auction's I have attended if there is a car/ or something with a title the Auctioneer will announce that they have the paper work or not for the item. These are auctions with an auctioneer.

On Auctions without Auctioneer's usually there is no paper work. I have found in the notice's that they will state if they have the paper work for it or not.

I have seen two cars and a sail-boat sell with titles. All with Auctioneers.

And to answer your next question yes some facility's do their own auctions.

This is from Florida so laws maybe different.

Buying and selling cars on auction has become the major source of vehicle sales world wide. Most of the cars are sold today on auctions in the world than by any other means.

He isn't talking about dealer auto auctions or car auctions by repair shops and such.  These are vehicles and things found in storage units.  I did find out in my area that they can sell the vehicle and such in the unit.  In fact a car + engine is going up for auction this week unless the person pays up.  For myself I'd have to get a salvaged title to sell it.

I had to research and found my answer by walking door to door.

I couldnt find the answer here on this forum.

This is in TEXAS  i dont know about any other states or their laws.

Answer - if you find a motorcycle or a titled vehicle in the storage, if they didnt see it, you go tell the office that you need a form that says:

Storage lien for licensed vehicle storage facility for a vehicle obtained on or after 9-1-11

Its a VTR =265- Vsf  Rev. 09/11 Form.

The storage will have this form, you will need a receipt from this locker you won and that form  VTR =265

Very important, you will need a certified letter that they sent to the previous tenant.  opened or unopened.  That proves that they abandoned it.

then you take it to the Dmv and explain that you got this from the storage and show a receipt and that unopened or opened certified letter plus the vehicle information.

The storage will give it to you but you must report it to the office or you ll catch hell from the police or the dmv because between the auction time to lets say the week after the auction, that guy could call it in stolen and you having "stolen" item on your hands.
