New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Flipping a Unit
« on: April 12, 2012, 07:38:37 AM »
Ebay isn't perfect. But it is by far the best value tool out there, especially with wide ranging collectibles. There are exceptions like fine art etc, and bulky items.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Any tips on holding an Auction
« on: April 11, 2012, 08:22:11 PM »
After I read the first- I skipped most everything else  :P But there is a recent auction/ auctioneer up around danbury who is bringing his excess trash / dead inventory/ slow movers to a couple of storage places. He is advertising on auctiozip as a" storage auction". Bidders beware- this seems to be a really ugly trend.
Ps- i'm both a baad spella nd bad smella, and typin' on my ipoop doesn't help.
Yes, I called it an ipoop  ??? ::)

Roger-Danbury, Connecticut ( maybe New Milford & Brookfield too)

What's it Worth?? / Do you pay for it?
« on: December 29, 2011, 08:21:44 PM »
:o Does anyone pay for any of the art database services? Any opinions on any of them? Not that I get much art - but its painfully frustrating not knowing if they are known, valuable, or who signed it! Recommendations welcome-tnx-M

What is with the guy with the sextent? I've seen him I think 2-3 times on pawn stars, I think on hardcore pawn, and I think one of the storage shows. I've got the next show- Storage Actors  ;D

The Treasure Chest / Re: Unit with a car inside.
« on: November 12, 2011, 08:37:44 AM »
I forgot I bought a car in a unit. It was a circa 1990 toyota supra . There were about 6 bidders there. Nothing else in the unit- we asked the  auctioneer if we could walk around it. It looked ok - I didn't know a thing about it. But it looked interesting. I got it for $700+/-. The really good thing- previous owner must've known he was losing it - title was in the car. The bad news was no motor. Hood was closed and we couldn't touch. I got quite lucky that I sold it within a day or so right out of the unit. It could have been a real PITA.

Maybe a bit off topic- about a year ago on one of the gov auction sites were several 1ton 4x4 vans for sale . Iirc they were around 2004's with 100k miles . I think they all went for over $10k each.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Anyone have to deal with this?
« on: October 25, 2011, 08:44:07 AM »
Hi Alloro- I usually don't read any of the paperwork. ::) But the busiest storage auctioneer here in Connecticut usually says in his pre auction speech- (something like) previous owner has upto 72 hours to purchase back unit at a "reasonable price" . Weather required or just legal cya-not sure it matters. Iirc - wether here or in Mass I heard a story. It was an auction company sold the wrong unit. The unit that was sold was paid up. I assume the auctioneer tried to get said items back - probably with great difficulty. -M

I don't have any lost Elvis tapes ;D But a friend of mine got a unit a while back. I haven't yet gone to see him, but I think he got some stuff from a musician who played with " he thinks" Bob Dylan. In some of the stuff- he has some cds/ dvds. that sounded like they were from a studion session. So the real question is- what legaly could you do with an item like that? Ebay? Auction? I assume that if it was high audio quality- it couldn't be made into record/cd because of copywrite laws. Any input? Thanks-M

I saw a unit like this get auctioned off this spring. From what I could see, it had a good amount of lights and stands.  Iirc- it went between 2000-2500. No idea though if money was made or lost on it.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Worst Unit?
« on: August 12, 2011, 09:06:06 PM »
The good , the bad, and the ugly. My total cost was about $1800. The large bulk of auction items brought in a bit over 1100. A few other pieces at another auction brought in 200+. Loser  ::) The good was a friend helped me dump a couple trucks for free. The ugly was how public storage acted quite poorly to me. I have called the district and regional managers, with no luck of them honoring the $1 special they announced at the auction. The auctual cost of the one month bill was $520. Not the first ps unit I bought, and I have taken advantage of the special in the past. My worst unit  :-\
