I'm wondering how they can keep coming up with new material inside all these storage units that haven't already been featured before. It's almost like that pawn shop reality TV show in that regard I suppose? At the end of the day, I’m not surprised that the producers ended up having to plant items in order to keep the show going...

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Portable Storage Auctions

I should think that it's the mode of operation of the business that determines what kind of customer make use of pods rather than the stationary storage units at a storage facility. People all have the same kind of things though! You're probably just as likely to get good stuff out of one of these as one of the traditional units!

eBay / Re: Strange EBAY dispute resolution
« on: February 25, 2016, 12:15:22 AM »
I have heard of a similar situation before from a friend whereby the buyer tried to report a dispute and ebay/paypal refunded the buyer without debiting from the seller. The seller didn’t even have sufficient time to react. However, he wasn’t as lucky as you were to have received back the item. Hence, in my friend’s situation, the buyer got the item for free. I guess in the online shopping platform, there will always be those few who will just try their luck at scamming.

Storage Facilities / Re: staging units.

In my opinion, it shouldn’t be of any problem as the entire storage facility is rightfully theirs anyway. Hence, it is considered their territory and rights to perform any selling provided that those items on sale are not illegal. It is a similar process to that of a storage unit auction, only that the items on sale are theirs.

Online Storage Auctions / Re: Hard Close v/s Soft Close

Depending on which side you're standing on I suppose? It looks like the general consensus is that hard closes work for the buyer and soft closes work for the seller. Unfortunately I don't think we have much of a choice unless we run the auction…

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Unit full of bikinis

There are a lot of kinky people out there my friend! Haha! While us normal people think that it's gross and totally unhygienic, there are those weird fellows out there who really enjoy that kind of thing. In any case, it's another dollar in your pocket…

That's actually a rather interesting topic. Don't you have to win the auction first? In the first place, if the owner is auctioning on a public platform, he should not have control of who bids. Once you win, it's pretty much paperwork from there!

Good count of the number of storage units being advertised. So precise! Kidding aside, I also wonder why that nowadays the number of storage units being auctioned are on the rise. Although I haven't seen any double numbers like this, but I have seen advertisements in some areas that it consistently increased over time. I have checked and compared our rental policies and these are still the same - haven't changed a single bit but I think more and more people have defaulted for reasons we are not aware of.

Storage Auctions "In The News" / Re: Dan Dotson 4-20% survival rate
« on: July 02, 2014, 10:08:36 PM »
I just saw the news about Don Dotson and he was just released from the hospital after the aneurysm surgery. The employees at the storage facility were talking about it earlier that I had to check immediately. I'm a big fan of Storage Wars and the show won't be the same without him. We thought he wouldn't survive the double brain aneurysm surgery but he did!  Everyone who supports the storage show were tweeting about his release endlessly.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Good Part Time Income??

I’m really finding this quite informative. As a self storage manager, we appreciate the auctions a lot because it does help us to clear units out and help us get them ready for the next users. I'd love to chip in my 2 cents - have any of you decided to go into collaborations for storage auction units? I would think that as long as each party puts in the same amount of effort as the other, you can cover twice the number of units, halve the costs of clearing and share the haul. More importantly is finding the right partner to get into this kind of thing into, but they always say 2 heads are better than 1!

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Personal items

Being a manager in a self storage facility, I can really appreciate the good work that you guys are doing here with this thread. A lot of our customers really don't know what's coming when they lose their units and I can vouch that many of them (even if they forgot they had personal items in there) really do appreciate their stuff from storage being returned to them. So good on you guys!

Honestly, if I were to find a bunch of really old VALUABLE coins in my backyard, I'd probably take some advice from you guys and maybe just one step further - what about putting the whole pot into a self storage unit or vault? That way they can pass off as not too far away from their current standard of living, but create some really good legacy money for t heir kids and grandkids.

Storage Facilities / Re: Reasons people lose their storage unit
« on: March 12, 2014, 10:53:25 PM »
This is a really interesting and honestly, depressing compilation of reasons here. Honestly we've witnessed a lot of different reasons why people give up their storage space. Mind, that some of this is pretty confidential, so no names of course. Sometimes the storage units are just forgotten, people travel cross country and realise that they don't need the items anymore, and since it's cheaper to not have to bother with clearing their stuff out and disposal, they simply stop paying the rental charges. Go figure.

That's a fantastic collection of facts right there! And here's one that I'm definitely supporting too:
• (And here’s a stat that SSA is rightly proud of) – 95.4 percent of current SSA direct members say YES! They would recommend SSA membership to other self storage owner-operators.  (There’s still room for improvement, though.)

So here's the link to the one in Australia for all you guys who just need someone who will help you to do the best that you can in your Self Storage business!

I'm finding these stories really funny! Seems like a lot of things slip into the self storage units even with regular checks and I can understand the frustration coming from you guys. Just to add my 2 cents worth, I'm glad that I'm understanding a little bit more each time I read into the forums and hope that I can apply what I learn to my own outlet.
