Stories about Storage Auctions / Dump run sells for $450

So my very first auction was a few weeks back on a Saturday. Being a Saturday alone probably tells half the story. There were 3 units up for auction in a smallish city of 15K people. About 70 people, including kids and babies, seriously who brings their baby to an auction.
The first unit is nicely packed, full of boxes that looked like they belonged to an older couple. This unit sold for $900. Seemed expensive but I could understand this one.
Next unit is nasty, has a cheap futon, a $5 bike, garbage bags, smells like something died in it. Literally can't see a single item worth more than $5. The thing sells for $450. I could not believe what I had just seen.
Last unit has basically nothing but a few cheap furniture pieces. Sold for $50.
