General Storage Auction Talk / I'm quickly learning to hate pianos
« on: September 16, 2011, 12:31:15 AM »
I've been to quite a few auctions in the last month, since starting out, and it seems like there are pianos in at least one unit at every auction. I went to an auction yesterday; from the outside of the unit I won, I could see a vintage looking typewriter case, (which turned out to be a 1930's LC Smith Corona)  ;D I moved some boxes, pulled a blanket down, and of course, there's a piano. The wheels barely work and it weighs like 700 lbs. It seems like nobody wants pianos. What does everyone else do with them? Thanks!

Stories about Storage Auctions / Bought my first units!
« on: August 26, 2011, 10:01:08 PM »
I went to my second auction today, there was only 8 people there, unlike my first one, where there was 80 people. I got two units, one for $5, turns out it had about $20 worth of stuff. The second unit I got for $45. I could see a tv, a nice dvd player, and what looked like pottery partially buried under some clothes. The dvd player turned out to be a really nice one, the tv was very broken, and the pottery was an urn full of ashes, (which I left with the office)!

Luckily, underneath the clothes, I found about 20 dvd's and about a dozen records, Disney collectibles, and then a bunch of other goodies. After researching online, I think I can make $150 to $200; not bad for my first units I guess.  ;D

New to Storage Auctions? / Noobie opening bid question
« on: August 20, 2011, 09:31:01 PM »
I went to my first auction the other day, woohoo! It was a U-Haul auction, and there was around 80 people there, (I think I'll do some calling of some smaller facilities, maybe a smaller crowd).

Anyway, here is the question: we previewed a unit and all I could see were loose piles of clothing and a couple trash bags full of clothes, the auctioneer started at $50, and without thinking, I blurted out $10. Is this like a faux pas, or is it acceptable if the locker appears to be less valuable?

Thanks for your input!

Welcome to the Online Storage Auctions Forum / Hi from Orlando Florida
« on: August 16, 2011, 10:43:28 PM »
Hi, I'm just starting in the business. I actually became interested in storage auctions like 15 years ago; after I didn't pay my storage fee and my locker was auctioned, lol. I have become disabled recently, so I am looking for something to help suppliment my income a little, I have already started going to yard sales, picking up stuff from Clist, etc. Feel free to say hi, give advise. If you're in the area, maybe I will see you out there!
