Picker's Paradise / Would you return contents....
« on: May 15, 2015, 12:44:55 PM »
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/texas-man-finds-hidden-treasures-chest-estate-sale-article-1.2222720

I'm pretty honest and believe in the whole karma thing but I don't know about returning the unknown contents of an item I bought.

I do wonder how they didn't know it was there.   At some point the dresser had to be moved.  Wouldn't you hear it sliding around?

PayPal / Notice of Policy Update: Nov2014
« on: September 27, 2014, 05:07:29 PM »
"And last but not least, you'll see some updates to our User Agreement that go into effect November 18, 2014. If you're interested in all the details, take a look at our Policy Updates Page. Here are the highlights:

• We're increasing the time for buyers to file merchandise disputes (Item Not Received and Significantly Not as Described) from 45 days to 180 days.
• We're extending buyer protection to include item not received claims for custom made products.
• Because PayPal Seller Protection and Buyer Protection policies may vary from country to country, we're adding language to clarify which country's policy applies when a seller makes a sale to a buyer outside of the U.S."
..................................................................
Six months to file a dispute?

Now, I haven't actually gone in to read the updates so maybe they have conditions, maybe not.   But six months is a long time.

eBay / List-Sell, get $20 Promotion: Sucks.
« on: July 14, 2014, 12:32:34 PM »
I got an email promotion: List in next ten days get $10, if it sells get another $10.

I listed an item I've had problems selling for way low. Immediately sold.
Break down is it sold for $22.  $2.20 went to ebay > $0.98 to paypal > $13.20 to ship > paid $6 for it = a loss of $0.38.  But got $20 gift certificate which would bring profit up to where others are selling for...eventually.

Well, it's not a gift certificate.  Its a code that has to be used in the next seven days.  Now I have to go search around ebay for something that costs $20.  Figure I'll get printer ink or razors or something I'll eventually need.

The promotion did say the "certificate" had an expiration date but I didn't figure on 7 days.  That's BS.

eBay / Feed back disappeared
« on: June 23, 2014, 08:14:08 PM »
Most of you know I try my best to boycott ebay.  But occasionally I do use it for hard to move items or to buy things I can't find cheaper anywhere else.
So I'm on today to buy a book and notice my feedback is gone.
This account was only set up a year ago and only had three from selling...but they're gone.  Doesn't really matter.  No one leaves me feedback anyway and I never use it but still, what's up with that?

What's it Worth?? / Silver plated.....
« on: May 25, 2014, 01:47:50 PM »
Anyone have any luck recycling silver plated items lately?

I've got all this silver plate from a death in the family.  Went thru it all and no sought after patterns.  Plus, it was actually used....like every Sunday/family/holiday dinner for 50 years.  It's pretty worn. Had a sale and a set of flatware (50pc) didn't even sell at $15 (who wants to polish it). In fact, it's so NOT wanted it sat out next garage, unattended, over a weekend and no one took it.

I've been all around and no will buy it.  They'll take it, but not buy it.   I'm not trying to recycle for silver content but they're copper based. Nickel. No one will even give me low brass price.
I use to have no problem selling it.  Wouldn't get very much but they would buy it. Now no one wants it.

I was at a thrift shop and noticed they had a nice assortment.  Asked how well it sold.  She said all of it has been there for years and it keeps growing.  Told here I had a bunch I'll probably end up donating as well.  Her reply: "oh please, Don't bring it here."

eBay / Ebay hacked -change ur password
« on: May 21, 2014, 10:57:37 AM »
Ebay states:

"The company said its compromised database does not contain financial information but includes customers' names, encrypted passwords, email addresses and phone numbers. EBay is advising users to change their passwords."

I like how they wait two-ish months before saying anything.  No notice sent.  No info on ebay.....

And people think I'm paranoid because I use a mail drop and prepaid cards.

Picker's Paradise / Picks 03/21-23/2014
« on: March 23, 2014, 02:32:55 PM »
Didn't do to bad this weekend.
Mostly grind-it-out stuff.  Not huge profit but a lot of it for cheap.

Got 50 backpack replacement clasps for $12.50.   Retail at $3.99/ea.  will throw them up on ebay for a while but think they are going to swap meet and sell the lot to someone.

Nice little copper double boiler for $5.  Not name brand but will CL for $40 and see what happens.  Thinking an offer of $20-$25 is good.  Really thin copper but most people just want the ceramic insert anyway.

Competing into spring I grabbed the hiking packs and tents. Five of each for $5/ea.  All name brand, cheapest pack was $150 new.  Really good condition.  Figure $25-75 each.  One REI tent was brand new and sells for $200.  Might just return it for a gift card.

Got two drill presses.  Those little ones that sell at Home Depot for $75.  Paid $5.

Starting to see a trend here?    Yeah.  Pretty much everything was marked to sell.  Five bucks got most everything left.  It was a feeding frenzy!  lol

Then just a bunch of misc. stuff.  Like packaged rope and fishing line and what not.  Stuff was like 10cents/ea.  I will try to sell but if not they are all things I'll use at some point or give to friends.

Also got myself a counter top griddle (yep, $5) Now I can make more than one pancake at a time.....

I basically filled my entire trunk for under $100 and I'll make that back on just the one tent.

Picker's Paradise / Pickin is Slow
« on: March 22, 2014, 11:48:47 AM »
I come take a look around daily but I don't have much to post.
Due to multiple surgeries over the past several years I couldn't do the physical labor of big units.
With few small units available and the shows upping attendance, and price, I concentrated on picking.
Now I'm back in college which 1) takes a ton of time and 2) my classes fall during the most typical auction times.....I haven't been to an auction in months.

Even picking is hard.  Not many estate sales in the winter.  Should be picking up (no pun intended) but I really don't have time to sell.  It's been hard to list items because from day-to-day I don't know what my homework schedule will be.

There is what sounds to be a great auction next week.  Facility with a lot of units, they primarily have smaller units and its in a nice area of town......and it's scheduled to start the same time as my finals. That's my life.

Seems to be a trend around here.  Profit of units isn't really worth the cost (time, work  ect.) and have branched out into other areas. At least for those of us with other things going on.

Picker's Paradise / Pawn shop pick.
« on: February 16, 2014, 03:13:58 PM »
Just got a Star Wars edition R2D2 xbox package at a pawn shop for $140 out-the-door.

Have already been offered an standard xbox and $150 cash for it!

I'd never been to this one. Was just driving buy.  Awesome retail prices.  Really small place.  Guy said they just try to move product.  If someone doesn't pick up pawned items they look at how much they are into it, how much was paid back.  Try to recoup money plus 20-30% but always take offers. Don't have space to be holding retail items.

I'll be back.

I'd like to hear from some new people.  Either registered members that haven't posted or those of you that lurk but haven't registered (registration takes like a minute) but anyone is welcome.....

What I'd like to know is what is attracting you to storage auctions?

Over the years, on-n-off, I've done it for a bit of extra income. But I have specific types of units I go for.  What does this mean?  I never loose money.....or not much.  I also means I win very few auctions.  All said, time vs. money....I'd be better off with a part time job.
So now I other methods of finding items to sell.  I've found I can make just as much, spending 10% of the time and 1% of the work.

So why do I still attend auctions when I have time?   Excitement. The gamble. In picking I'll never come across gold in the middle of trash. Or if I do I still have to negotiate price. Dumpster diving is messy. Auctions? It's like buying a scratch ticket..... But I know I'll get at least some of my money back.

With all the shows now proven to be, I don't want to say fake, let's say "well edited"; any google search telling the horror stories and amount of work and not to do it.  With very few success stories here......

What is making you look at storage auctions and think "I can make a lot of money in that!"?    (Not saying you can't, just looking for what draws you)

Or do you have other reasons?   Looking for antiques? You enjoy selling at flea markets but need items to sell? Is it about the money or something else?

Picker's Paradise / Picks 01.26.2014
« on: January 26, 2014, 05:16:27 PM »
Picked a game table today for $100. Still with original leather top.   Made by A. Cutler & Sons in 1875.
They were asking $275 but was pushing end of estate sale.

It's being sold for (asking price) online for around $300-$400.   Tho, a restored one sold at auction for $800.

Also got some really nice antique copper pieces.  Kettles and what not.  Paid $40 for a box full. Should be able to get $200+  out of them
Best part is the recycle weight is more than $40.  It would kill me to recycle them but push come to shove at least I know I won't loose money....

Will try a post pics later.....

The Lounge / Roku 2 xs
« on: January 24, 2014, 12:00:45 PM »
In an effort to live more cheaply I've dropped my six billion channels from cable (and landline phone)
I have netflix, hulu and Amazon Prime that I stream off my iPad.  However, I enjoy working on my ipad while watching TV.  Can't do both.

In my room I just ran a HDMI cable from PC.  Stream off that.   But in living room I've been looking at the Roku.  Can get one for right around $50.

My other option is to hook up old laptop to TV.   But I don't really like having the wires going across the room and don't want to get up and search for things.  In my room I just have a wireless keyboard/mouse.  But that's not doing for me in living room aesthetics wise.  Remote would be nice.

Anyone use a Roku?  Pro's and Con's?

Other Forms of Selling / LinkedIn
« on: January 22, 2014, 12:08:02 PM »
Can someone tell me the benefits of LinkedIn?

I'm not registered so can't see the full site.  Just wondering the aspects of it and how it works.

Anyone on it and actually seen a major being it from it?

The Lounge / New laws take affect today....
« on: January 01, 2014, 04:29:49 PM »
It may have been the least productive year for Congress in history, at least in terms of passing laws – fewer than 60 of which made it through the House and Senate and were signed by President Barack Obama.

Across the country, however, state lawmakers were busy getting more than 40,000 bills passed, ones that tackle everything from drones to food stamp benefits.

In Illinois for example, teenagers will no longer get to use tanning beds without a doctor's note. If you live in Delaware, visit the shark fin buffet while you can, a new law will make it illegal to own, sale, or distribute the controversial delicacy. And in California, new laws take effect that will let students take part in school sports, or use bathrooms based on their gender identity, regardless of the gender noted in their birth

California:

Washington marijuana retail stores are legal, tho won't be up-n-running till like June. The word "riot" was taken off the books.  Some counties 2x DUI's require bracelet to be worn that measures alcohol content.....

What good/bogus laws are in your state as of today?
