General Storage Auction Talk / Personal items
« on: February 19, 2014, 05:41:15 PM »
How do you handle personal items and what do you consider personal?

I normally take pictures, social security cards and some mementos back to the facility to return to the owner. Most mail gets thrown away. I have taken back a box that was saved baby items though I went through it first. I do take pictures  out of frames if the frames are nice. I feel like if I can make money on the item than I paid for it it is mine to do with what I like.

I know of two occasions that the stuff was given back because the managers made a point to let me know how happy the previous owner was to get their stuff back. It makes me feel like I am doing the right thing.

I have talked to several that say they don't waste their time taking personals back. I was just interested in every ones take on how they deal with this stuff.

What is this thing? I haven't clicked on it but it keeps showing facebook, twitter etc. When that happens the page locks up and I have to refresh. I have been on here for 15 minutes and have had to refresh 4 times. Getting very irritated.  ???

Stories about Storage Auctions / It's raining! Time for one big sale.
« on: February 06, 2014, 01:23:09 PM »
Most of you remember the unit I scored last year about this time with all of the expensive art and furniture. It sure made me a ton of money. I still have a few very expensive pieces left here. One of them is a Fredrick Remington bronze "Coming Through the Rye". I put what I considered a low price on it at $3000.00. There was an appraisal in the unit for it at $8500.00. I have been offered $2700 on a couple of occasions and turned it down. It sure has brought a lot of people in just to have a look at it.

This man comes in two weeks ago and falls in love with it. He was floored when I told him the price. He apparently has four other bronzes by Remington and knows their value. So he tells me he is a cattle rancher and with no rain he is having to pay for feed so right now he can't afford to buy this piece but... If it rains in the next three weeks he will be back. Well he came back. I am so sad to see it go but I am so happy to have the money. I am thanking the heavens for raining down on me. Both with water and money.

Now I gotta find something else impressive to put back in that space. I really hate my job. LOL

Stores / New year new store
« on: January 09, 2014, 05:05:02 PM »
I didn't acutely change locations but I have decided to rearrange everything. How often do those of you that have a store completely change everything? I was just thinking that maybe old customers would see pieces I have had for awhile if I made it all different. I change areas quite often as pieces leave but I haven't done this big of a change since I opened. I am hoping that it helps in sales during this slow time of the year.

This last unit I bought I hired a friend to help me with. Lots of heavy lifting and I couldn't do it myself. She is having a very hard time with all of this stuff.
Seems the mom was in pain management and didn't take very good care of her children. She bought every toy you can imagine for her kids. Everything is filthy! The clothes are gross and every surface is drawn on. The mom obviously didn't pay any attention to her kids. I believe by a few pieces of mail in the unit that the kids were taken away. I don't have a problem with this but my friend feels sorry for these people even though she doesn't know them.
Anyone ever have a unit where the story you put together tugs at your heart strings? I haven't yet but this is a business to me and I try not to get emotionally involved.

The Treasure Chest / You just never know...
« on: November 04, 2013, 05:56:31 PM »
So I bought a unit several months ago and there was this stupid poster in it. It has been laying around here in my way and I keep moving it not sure where to put it. It's a poster for a reunion concert for Cream from London in 2007. Psychedelic crazy crap in my opinion and I have never heard of the band. I know old posters can be worth alot of money but this one doesn't fit into that category. Anyway I decide to look it up and see if it has any value before I throw it away. To my surprise the dang thing is worth somewhere around $500.00. They only made 250 that are signed by the designer and have an embossed logo. Guess this is one for e-bay. You just never know what you have until you look into it. Glad I didn't just throw it away.

Garage Sales / Have you ever run and Estate Sale? Any hints or tips?
« on: October 28, 2013, 10:14:15 AM »
I'm thinking about running a family friends Estate Sale. I will be going to see what is there tomorrow. If I do this it will be huge. This is a home and business. One down town Santa Barbara city block. I am thinking I will probably have to split it into two weekends. It will be lots of work but also a potential for a huge profit. Will know more tomorrow. Any thoughts or ideas would be great.

Storage Facilities / Storage facility policies
« on: August 20, 2013, 11:58:27 AM »
Lately it seems like some of the facilities have had to change some of their policies about deposits. The last auction I went to the manager had upped the deposit from $50.00 to $100.00. She also made a new rule that if you need more time you have to pay and additional $100.00 per day. She said she had two 10X30's that didn't get cleaned out from the previous auction. It really sucks that newbies do this stuff and the repercussions come down on those of us that do this for a living.

She is talking to a lawyer about how she can write up a contract between the buyer and the facility so that if the buyer doesn't clean the unit they can be charged fees for clean up. This is a local chain with 8 facilities down the coast so if one does it the others will to. The buyers are banned from ever coming to the facility for auction but that doesn't help the situation with deposits.

General Storage Auction Talk / Your favorite thing?
« on: August 13, 2013, 01:57:54 PM »
The door rolls up. You get that breathless heart racing feeling. What is it that is behind that door?

For me it is a really great furniture piece. Mid century modern or antique. Preferably a hutch or buffet.

I have yet to find a unit where the sky is the limit. I usually have the money with me to buy what ever I want but I tend to be very cautious.

Saw this on the news tonight.

You would think if it happened before they would reconsider how they configured the facility.

Weird & Wacky Finds / My unusual Urn story
« on: June 11, 2013, 01:30:01 PM »
I have been told by the old timers may times that if you do this long enough you will eventually find an Urn. Well this is the story of my first one.
The unit was a huge 10X30 full of stuff. It was a great unit. As we are going through it in a box full of sea shells we find Dr Paul. Ugh... I set him on my desk for the time being and say I will get back to this problem later. I totally believe in karma so throwing him out is not an option.
Several days later while going through the last of the boxes that are all paperwork I come across a folder marked will. Turns out Dr Paul has the deed to his family plot in Tennessee.
Hum... I call the cemetary and find out that he has paid for everything including his headstone that is already set. The lady asks me to send him to her and she will make sure he goes into his plot. She also asked me to write a letter telling how he came to me as no one was ever going to believe her story. Dr Paul is now resting peacfully in his rightful place. Now how come his son who owned the unit couldn't have taken care of this? Oh well I feel good about taking the time and being respectful even though I never knew this person. Good Karma.  :)

Picker's Paradise / Auction house score this week
« on: April 23, 2013, 03:24:20 PM »
I was at the local auction house this weekend. Lots of people but prices were not bad. Anyway this vacuum comes up and I have a friend that had asked for me to keep a look out for one. Figured if it went cheap what the heck. I'm not a vacuum snob. I will by whatever is cheap and works. No one wants it so I pick it up for $5.00. All of the attachments and a large box full of bags. I get back to the store and start looking through the box. This thing is an Electrolux and the invoice is in the box. Someone paid $1138.67 for this vacuum in 1998! Needless to say my friend is not getting it and I have become a vacuum snob. Not making any money on this one but the floor in the store looks great.

General Storage Auction Talk / Cost of units in your area?
« on: November 13, 2012, 08:04:38 PM »
Just wondering if other areas in the country are like mine. Seems like units with furniture go pretty cheap while the same size unit full of boxes goes really high. I am not complaining as I have a store and like the furniture with a few boxes of stuff. Usually I can scoop for around 300.00. I like to bid on what I can see and feel that the stuff contained in the boxes is my profit. This has worked out for me.
There are three regulars (all were doing this before I got involved) that will bid a box unit to well over 1000.00 on a regular basis. I know they sell at the swap-meet but are those units really worth that much money? I have never had the courage to bid that much on something I can't see. I guess I am not that much of a gambler.
Just wondering what kind of trends you guys see in your area.

Picker's Paradise / Buying a house full?
« on: August 21, 2012, 11:46:38 AM »
My other job is construction. I work with alot of real estate agents. This home owner was put into a retirement home and her kids want to sell the home. There are repairs that need to be made that we are bidding on through the construction company.

In meeting with the agent she said the kids didn't want to deal with the stuff inside the home. I'm thinking this is an opportunity to get some nice stuff. I know they have gone through and taken out the things they want and I have not see what is left yet. I am arranging that with the agent now.

I would have to box everything up as this is a senior mobile home park and they do not allow garage sales. It could be a whole lot of work as this is a three bedroom home.

Has anyone had any experience with this kind of thing? I don't even know where to start on price. Should I offer to leave the home clean and how far to I offer to clean? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks for reading.
