In relation to anything of a "metal" nature, I have been using a magnet to try to work out what's of any value.    Do the experts here also use acid testing kits?  I would be worried I would damage something.......

I've also heard you can stick something under a grinder, which I don't even think we have a grinder in our shed.

What is your basic method for determining what is silver/pewter/etc??   I would hate to give something away which turned out to be of real value.

Also.....  If you find something old, eg vase, candle holder, etc and can't find it anywhere on eBay, does that automatically mean it's not worth anything?   Haven't had time to go checking out antique stores for opinions on these things.

Hope you don't mind the basic questions.  Still got contents from two storage units, although we are slowly making some money selling things!   Hopefully will move onto storage unit no.3 next month!

Greetings fellow storage hunters...   :)

I'm from Melbourne, Australia and we recently purchased our first two storage units (dare I say it...initially inspired by Storage Wars, which is also very popular here).

In fact, I think my very first mistake was to buy the second unit when we hadn't actually sold any contents from the first one!!  Our garage is now chock-a-block full of stuff, plus we still have some office furniture which we had to put back into a storage unit temporarily.

Have been exploring markets (although it's too cold and wet lately), plus started listing on eBay, etc.
We will certainly make decent money on these two units, provided we can sell the stuff!

Anyway, I'll catch up with you all at the Newbie threads most likely!

Thanks for having me here.   :)
