eBay / Why is eBay hemorrhaging sellers? Their lack of common sense!
« on: February 16, 2014, 11:35:21 AM »
eBay's main problem is that they lack common sense when they make policy changes, claims decisions, etc. Their belief is that they can throw hundreds of thousands of free listings at people and that will keep them around. Not true. Once a seller is burned badly enough, they will turn and run, no matter how many free listings they're given.

In mid-December I sold a Johnnie Walker statue. 28" tall. It was a bar display. Very nice piece. I sold it for $157.50 plus something like $30 for shipping. The guy that bought it was in Hawaii. No problem I said, I'll cover the extra shipping which didn't go much over $30. I already had a box and plenty of packing supplies, so no extra expense there.

The package arrives damaged, 2 weeks later. Okay, not my fault. Was packed well. I bought insurance. No problem! I'll start the claim, I tell the buyer. The buyer insists on starting the claim. I tell him that I should, because I'll receive the check and will reimburse him once I get word that the claim has been accepted or denied. No, he insists on making the claim himself. I give in.

February 2ish. Buyer files complaint with eBay. Package does not match description. Arrived broken. Okay, I check with Post Office. Claim is still pending. I contact the buyer, his reason.. Post Office is taking too long. February 10, I receive a letter from the Post Office, they need proof of insurance, no problem. Proof of value. No problem. I mail those items to the address indicated on February 10.

February 13. I contact eBay. Please extend the claim date. There is still a pending review of the insurance claim at USPS. No problem. We'll extend.

February 16. eBay finds in favor of the buyer, takes $182.50 from my Paypal. WTF!?!?!?

I call eBay, heated. I apologize in advance for my upcoming behavior and foul language. Their reasoning for concluding the buyer was due his money? You'll get a check from USPS.. NO.. the message trail clearly indicates that I intended to do the insurance claim but the buyer INSISTED!!

eBay's response to that... Well, we can't do anything about it now.

BULLS!&#T.. Sorry for going Q-Bert..

If eBay would get their heads out of their butts and hire some people with common sense, or the ability to read and comprehend words, they may hang onto more sellers.

The Lounge / 365ish days of lotto starts today
« on: January 02, 2014, 02:50:42 PM »
Alan Greenspan has been quoted as saying that playing $1 in the lottery is a good investment. Of course, I think it was a tongue in cheek comment regarding the stock market at the time... But I'm going to do it! I'm going to buy a $1 quick pick cash 5 lottery ticket every day it's available to play. I'll lye you guys know if (when) I win!

General Storage Auction Talk / Old Magazines
« on: December 28, 2013, 01:35:09 PM »
I have a TON of magazines from the 20's to the 80's to early 90's. A majority of them are National Geographic from the 60's/70's. I have about 10 from the 20's that are "The Carpenter" which is a union newspaper by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

Now that that's out of the way... Here's my question.. Many of the NatGeo's have little to no value, but if I remove the ads there is some value there. So, I'll be ripping ads out of those publications. The Carpenter... I have no idea the value. I can't find them anywhere. They're in pretty rough shape. But the ads in them could be fairly valuable. I saw some Dewalt, Skilsaw, Stanley Tools just to name a few.. Originals from the 20's could fetch up to $20. Do I tear them apart? Do I keep them intact and try my luck on Ebay? I just don't want to hang onto them forever..

eBay / I just started an ebay store...
« on: December 27, 2013, 10:17:06 AM »
So last night I decide to jump into an ebay store for the follow up features and more significant tracking/research features. Also the bump in insertion free listings and lowered final value fees. Now I'm putting up a bunch of stuff. Hopefully it pays off!

General Storage Auction Talk / Baldwin Keyed Locksets Without Keys
« on: December 26, 2013, 11:50:02 AM »
So in my last locker I found 2 boxes of brand new Baldwin door knobs and hinges. Both inside knobs without locks, and locksets as well as a deadbolt or 2. I sold both interior "egg knob" sets for $40 each and rather quickly too. My dilemma is that anything that requires a key is missing a key! I can bring them to a locksmith and have them rekey at a cost of $15-$22 ea. I'm guessing it's going to be $22 because that's just my luck!

There's about 10 sets that need keys. I'm wondering if they'll sell without me rekeying, and just have the buyer rekey at their own locksmith? Or should I just go ahead and rekey?

The Lounge / Why aren't there used tool stores?
« on: December 16, 2013, 03:20:38 PM »
Seems like there's a used store for just about anything. Tires, furniture, toys.. but not tools. Why is that? Admittedly, I know next to nothing about tools. I just figured out about a week ago that you can adjust standard pliers by moving the handle... and up until then I was calling that a wrench.

But we come across tools ALL THE TIME in lockers, why are there no used tool stores? I know you can pick 'em up in pawn stores, but that's a different animal altogether. Are we missing an opportunity to undercut the likes of Home Depot and Lowe's in our respective markets?

General Storage Auction Talk / Online Storage Auction Tips
« on: December 12, 2013, 11:20:00 AM »
Many of us buy lockers online using websites like StorageBattles and Virtual Storage Auctions.. I'd like to start a tip thread using these forms of storage auctions..

I'll start the contribution...

Get an auto refresh program! I downloaded a Chrome add on that will automatically refresh that tab every minute, 30 seconds, 10 seconds, even 5 seconds!

I use this set at 1 minute when I'm 15 minutes out. As it gets closer I creep up the refresh rate. When I'm within a minute, I refresh every 10 seconds. This way I know which bids are coming in..

General Storage Auction Talk / How do you gain connections?
« on: December 09, 2013, 12:18:15 PM »
Networking is a major component of the used goods business. If you're passing on opportunities because you don't have the connection to make the quick sale, you're losing money.

When we first started, we all had to build connections. Whether it be a contractor, mechanic, a furniture store, whatever. How do you gain those contacts? Do you cold call, rely on your other contacts for referrals, relatives?

General Storage Auction Talk / What are the machines in this locker?
« on: December 05, 2013, 01:12:25 PM »
Take a look at this locker on Storage Battles.. Machinery is my weak spot. I don't know crud about them. Anybody care to guess as to what the machinery is in here? I do see printer's trays so I'm hoping it is related. I also see an Antique NC plate, so could be automotive.

The Lounge / Anybody buy off of Alibaba.com / aliexpress.com?
« on: December 03, 2013, 01:26:10 PM »
I've been looking for cheap NFL jerseys for my son for Christmas. I don't need the real thing because he destroys his clothes.. I found some real cheap on Aliexpress.com but it concerns me because of the "too good to be true" factor. Also checked out other items on here and they are ultra cheap! Cheap enough to resell... anybody use them for personal or resale?

eBay / Handling Customer Complaints
« on: November 15, 2013, 11:43:00 AM »
I recently sold a Kate Spade hand bag on ebay and now the buyer is saying that the bag is not authentic. I always take merchandise like this to local 'experts' to get it somewhat authenticated. I bought 6 designer bags including this one in question from the same person at a yard sale. Each other bag sold without question to its authenticity and now this person has a problem with the most expensive of all the bags.

I'm suspicious that I'm going to receive a fake bag in place of my authentic bag. She is comparing my used bag to other new bags. I clearly stated multiple times that my bag is used. She is saying that the tags are wrong, again saying that the other bags on ebay have the right tag, when they are just newer and have the latest tag.

I've explained all this to the buyer, but they aren't accepting my answers. Anyone else sell these type of items on Ebay? Had them escalate to Ebay through the resolution center? Results?
