Picker's Paradise / Resale from shop to shop
« on: June 22, 2013, 01:57:09 PM »
Back when I was a young-in, my first vehicle was a beat up old pickup. Every Saturday morning it was my ritual to hit all of the new tire stores in my area. I'd sometimes pay $2-3 as a token for each used tire they had replaced, some places would just give them to me for free to avoid paying to dispose of them. In the afternoon when my truck was overflowing, I'd drive 30 miles up to a used tire shop in the city where I was paid $5-8 each for them.

I wish I could take credit for the idea but it was my aunt's. Maybe it was something people did back in the day. Regardless, as gas prices went up and I found ways of making better money on the weekends, I stopped doing it. Just curious if anyone else does something like this, recycling one shops junk and selling it to another.

The "Other" Job / "job" .......well
« on: June 11, 2013, 11:26:57 PM »
I was for a few years a repo man, a taste that sours in your mouth quite quickly. After that I knew going back to a 9-5 was not my thing so I got into outside sales. Yes, I for the last 6 years have been that a$*hole who knocks on your door to sell you cable services. I'm sure a lot of people would laugh and say that's not a real job, but it has served me well and done even better things for me in the auction biz. Simply, I make my own hours so I can attend what I need to, and what better other job than one where you meet 10-30 new people every day, chat them up and ask what they do in polite conversation. I've collected more peoples business cards, gotten more free advise on items and sold things I otherwise would likely have sat on for eons. Without initially intending it, my other job is the main reason for my modest success at auctions.

Stories about Storage Auctions / my craziest storage story by far
« on: June 01, 2013, 01:03:46 AM »
so, last year I found the flashlight pictured below in a unit. It was in a belt holster with a charger hanging out of the back of it. I plugged it in and the next morning found it to be the brightest flashlight I own, plus it didn't take batteries. Naturally it went with me a few days later to check out some units.  I'd brought along a friend to help my load up after. We got to a locker and I pass him the flashlight and tell him look in the back between a couch and dresser to see if he can read the side of a box. He grabs the flashlight and has trouble pushing the switch. He places his hand over the top, manages to flip the switch down and also press a button on the other side I had yet to notice. Suddenly there is the loud crackle of an electric arc, and my friend hits the ground like a sack of rocks. That was the moment I discovered the flashlight doubles as a stun gun. The only person that seemed unamused was the auctioneer, who thankfully let me stay when I gave him the short story of having bought the light from him at auction a few days prior. In summation, until you see a good friend hit the dirt in a cartoonish fashion, then spend the rest of the day with a bewildered look on their face like you would expect to see on someone who just **** their pants, you likely could not fathom the hearty belly laugh I had the remainder of that day.

What's it Worth?? / mystery stainless cart
« on: May 31, 2013, 11:12:02 PM »
Value put aside, does anyone know what this thing is? My first thought was a champagne cart, then maybe a cart to hold a catering tray, I just cant find anything close to it. The company seems to be gone, but I listed what is marked on it below. Nope, thats not a typo, thats how its on there.

Weird & Wacky Finds / infant coffin
« on: May 31, 2013, 11:04:22 PM »
Yup, an infant burial vault, I got one. I sure was hoping it was for a pet to make it less creepy. It even has some sort of bag of putty inside to seal the little tyke in..... Yeah... this is going to end up being a beer cooler for some weird bastard on ebay next week... so wrong.
