General Storage Auction Talk / Best Unit
« on: May 12, 2011, 03:39:02 PM »
What is the single best unit that you have ever had, in terms of profit?

I'll start:  $2,100 on a 10 X 10 unit.  Took about 8 days to sell everything in it (besides the trash of course).

The Treasure Chest / Got Another Unit
« on: May 02, 2011, 10:54:33 AM »
The last unit I got rocked, close to 2,000 profit in one week.  The unit I got on Saturday...not so much.

First off, the crowd was large, full of newbies.  I'm guessing 60-70% of the 60 people were new.  This auction was well advertised.  Anyways, 11 units up for auction, the one I got looked interesting from the door.  It had a Star Wars foosball table, tons of totes and boxes, patio furniture, and and a crappy couch.

I got it for $250, should've got it for about $50, but one geek was stuck on the foosball table.

Anyways, get it home start going through it and it's nothing but books.  Crappy, paperback, worn out books.  Hundreds of them.  By far the most garbage I have ever gotten out of a unit.

I got real excited initially because I found an old Silverware set, and the first two pieces I checked were Kirk & Son (Ebay it if you don't know)  However, the rest was Communion 1936 Silver Plated, 66 pieces.  Should fetch about $50-100 for it.  Not as good if it were all Kirk and Son, than we're talking 1,200-2,000.   I did score 312 brand new golf balls still in their original packaging, already sold them $80 on CList.

Also found a huge stamp collection, but upon further review, they may fetch only $20-$40 on ebay.
The Star Wars foosball table only sells for about $50, and the patio furniture I can maybe get $40 for.

Not a fan of this unit because 90% of it is trash, my God there is so much trash.  Including the mouse infested, chewed up couch.

If I'm lucky, I should make about $200 on this unit after dump runs, gas, and other expenses.

General Storage Auction Talk / Mattresses in Units
« on: April 26, 2011, 12:58:00 PM »
Anyone else notice that units with several mattresses go for a lot less money?  It seems to me that mattresses deter lots of people right away because they don't want/know to deal with them.  Best unit I ever got had 6 mattresses in it, got it for 5 bucks.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Dungeons and Dragons Unit
« on: April 08, 2011, 12:24:37 PM »
Last week in Minneapolis I hit up an auction, two locations, 23 units total.  I'd say about 25 people total at each facility.  Anyways, I didn't bid on anything the whole day, didn't see anything that I considered as an opportunity until the last unit of the of the day.  It was an inside unit, I was towards the end of the line so I didn't get to check it out until most others did.  Since it was the last unit of the auction, most people looked and then left.  About 6 people hung around.  Anyways the unit was a trashy 5 X 10, 6 mattresses total, junky couch, cheap tv stand and tv, however , it had a lot of bags and boxes.  Anyways, I could tell the mattresses scared most people, me included.  The mattresses were in the middle of the unit and it was hard to see anything in the back of the unit.  Me being 6'4" I had a good advantage, I jumped up with my light and saw a 4 piece bedroom set in the way back.  No one is bidding so I throw out a $5 dollar bid.  Going once, going twice, sold.  Got it for 5 bucks.  One of the best units ever!!!  Behind the mattresses' is:

7'10 G Loomis fishing rod ($150 Craigslist)
Shimano Calcutta fishing reel ($130 Ebay)
6 Abu Garcia spinning reels. (120 Total Ebay)
15 brand new Rapala Vertical Jigging Lures (Sold for $45 ebay)
30 DVDs ($30 Ebay, two seperate lots)
Playstation 2 + 30 games, controllers, etc ($55 ebay)
4 Piece bedroom set ($300 CL)
****ty Couch ($40 CL)
Sega Genesis + 8 games ($30 ebay)
Lebron James shoes ($20 ebay)
Dennis Rodman jersey ($25 ebay)
50+ Dungeons and Dragons books ($400 dollars between Amazon and Ebay, sold like crazy!!!)
4 End tables (80 in total from CL)
Still have a Sword and some misc. stuff to sell yet.

The reason this unit rocked is how fast everything sold!!! Lots of junk too.  This unit has my wife excited about this side job of mine, she does all the shipping now!!!  Me being a teacher it will be hard for me to hit up another auction until summer break.  $5 dollar unit is easily yielding me $1,000+ Profit!

General Storage Auction Talk / Medical Equipment
« on: February 06, 2011, 11:35:11 PM »
Has anyone come across any medical equipment?  In the recent unit I purchased, it contained several bone growth stimulators.  These pieces are valued for a decent buck.  Problem is, it clearly states not for resale unless you are a licensed medical dealer.  Governed by the FDA.  Are these items basically useless?  Let me know if any of you have had similar experiences.

Stories about Storage Auctions / The Jesus Freak Unit
« on: February 06, 2011, 02:43:48 PM »
My wife and I bought a unit yesterday for $170.  I set my limit at 180 on this particular unit and ended up winning it.  As my wife and I started loading up the unit, I realized that we purchased a Jesus' freaks unit.  As I continued to unload items, more and more nik-naks spilled out of these boxes.  We should make a little profit on this unit, but oh so many little angels(only a couple Willow Tree one's) and cheap crosses, christmas decorations, etc.  We did score a box filled with Boyd's Bears, may take awile to sell them all but they will sell. Pulled a couple Cobra CB radio's too! I felt a little weird throwing away broken pictures and figurines of Jesus though.  A lot of little BS that will be boxed up for a spring garage sale.

General Storage Auction Talk / Facebook
« on: January 31, 2011, 07:15:55 PM »
Facebook is an excellent resource for gaining some insight to a person whose unit is on the chopping block.  I would say in my experience I can locate about 40% of all people I search.  With the information you can gain from a person's profile, you can use this insight into your bidding.  Obviously, there are other important factors; how the unit looks, what materials and objects can you see, etc.  But information is power, and every little bit helps.  A couple of experiences I have had doing using this resource, provided great results.  For example, I searched this one lady on FBook and found out she owned a small fitness company.  She also wore some serious designer clothing from what her pics conveyed.  So I get to the auction with this info, unit comes up, a 5 X10, and there was a whole bunch of boxes.  The contents behind the boxes were blocked from view, but I sensed there was more.  I got it for about 175, kinda high, but I took an educated guess.  Sure enough, fitness equipment in the back of the unit.  Free weights, dumbbells, etc.  Made all my money back on those items alone.  And just like I saw in her profile, girl had some serious clothing and accessories.  I let my wife dig through that.  Overall, it wasn't a killer unit, but it was very profitable.  No way in hell I would have bid on this unit by appearance alone.  Although, I did, at times, feel like a creep scoping these individuals out.  It's a business though, they didn't pay their rent, **** happens.
