The Lounge / Texas Car Wars
« on: April 29, 2013, 08:29:18 PM »
I haven't seen this (just now tuned in and a commercial is on), but it has the words TEXAS, CAR and WARS in its title.

How can it lose ?

Just came out of the commericial...both the narrator and the first couple of characters are "twanging" away.

Your assesment rings true in my area too.

One store owner drives 100 miles (one-way) to auctions in my area!  He can't afford to take that box-truck back empty so sometimes he pays a premium for stock. Hope he's making some profit.

Oldest scam in the book. Knowing the price of an item they are coming to be and then being inexplicably short, or needing to break a large bill. I don't play that no more, happens to often. I always have change to break anything up and if they pull the I brought $10, $20, $50 too little game; I tell them where the nearest ATM machine is. Most of the time they just run to the ATM but sometimes they luckily "find" that extra money in the car. Wow! what a coincidence.  ::)

Yes, always having enough change should take care of anything they can pull. I draw the line at changing a $100 bill for anything less than a $10 to $15 sale. I can afford to wait for the next buyer to come by.

Also, the "amazing" find of the correct amount (in their car or even in the billfold as they stand in front of you!) plays out periodically.

I sometimes suggest they borrow from their friend who is with them (or spouse). The line sometimes continues .."I/he/she" doesn't have any money. My response is "Oh well, maybe next time".

These folks don't realize that for the most part we as sellers have done more transactions than they as buyers have done. If we have done 20 to 50 transactions each day we sell for years, it adds up to more experience than they have in buying for the same number of years.

Couldn't have been me, only 3 of the 5 units I bought were junk.  :)

40% of your units were good....that's a fantastic ratio !

Now that you mention it, not really.

Hence your decision to go into the exciting and profitable profession of buying liened storage units.

First off, if you're actually siting home counting posts then you need a hobby. Second I said, "posting messages online". I did not say only at this website.

Well, excuuuuuuse me !  My hobby is waiting for your reaction to my posts...talk about needing something to do. Aren't there any electrical contracts floating around your area to take care of?  It's a toss-up on which of us needs a "life"....Cobia is a distant third !   ;D

It's more likely you missed it because were busy posting messages online! ;)

There were 14 (count 'em, 14) posts on Saturday. You posted TWO. I posted ONE (in the evening after a day of selling at the flea market).

Other contributors were Alias, Travis, HomeGrown, etc.

Not to hard to count them up.  ;D

If you don't mind me asking...you keep saying it doesn't cost anything to list, yet you keep spending money to run the site. Why would you keep the site up and running without any revenues to support it?

He's a philanthropic kind of guy; does it out of the kindness of his heart.  ;D

Did anyone in Central California (or elsewhere) go to the Rancho Cordova 72 Vault Auction on 4-27-2013 Saturday?

Nope, was busy selling that day. I don't think any other central Californians are even on here, or if they are they won't admit it.

But I saw potential.. and it will make me money..

Yes, I think you said you might clear $100. At two days of work just tearing out the carpet/etc that doesn't amount to much.

I think the real value of this buy was that it will make you more cautious in the future in any regard.

Travis, I think we've beat this camel to death a number of times on various threads....

Poor camel !

Hypothetical question: What if the owner of the online forum you belong to is a snitch for the FBI? Would you keep posting comments that might cause an investigation?  :-\

Book 'im Dannel!"  ;D

Movieman, haven't you figured it out by now....

Yep, I figured it now. That's why now my main source for goods is PICKING !

I went to two auctions today that were only attended by NINE, count 'em NINE, people. And only 4 were regulars.

First place at 6 lockers and I bid on one (small but had at least ONE good item) and I stopped when the other regular went to $125....I bid my limit and didn't want to gamble on the rest of the contents (not much). I would have been really happy with it at $75 or so, but not to be.

Of the other five, there were two good ones but they went for $400 each and again I would have been comfortable with $250 to $300 based on what I saw. Just not that into gambling these days.

The second facility only had two lockers. First sold for $40. Second was a 10 x 30 about 3/4 full (aisle down the middle) but most particle board (which is OK if in good shape) and 13 year old Maytag washer/dryer. It went for $500...not enough smalls for me...and too many BIGS.

******

Yesterday I saw a guy (new of about 6 months) pay $350 for a lkr (10 x 15). I told him there was an item I was interested in so he took me in after he paid. The item wasn't quite what I wanted, but the information I gleaned WAS.
Boxes were empty. Cover over about a 10 foot by 6 foot area was covering low, lateral files cabinets (full of papers),
other stuff was worth about $200 at the most. His comment, "Man, I got screwed!"  Should have been "Man I screwed myself!"

It's really impressive how they set it up, however, I'm not having fun with insulation and tearing down wood framing.

So the property mgr didn't come through with any help or responsibility for it?

Maybe he sold it locally as a private sale.

That's probably it. It wouldn't be hard to do since his phone number was in the ad. The only thing he might have lost by not letting the sale go through as an auction was the potential of a higher price, but with only a few days left and no bids he might have been better off just taking the local offer.

There is one facility that must specialize in renting to garage bands. Usually when there is an auction there we hear a band practicing...what are the chances of that.

I've never seen one with rugs on the walls or even for sale at all. I have seen numerous lockers with carpet on the floor a couch/and or bed, tv setup, shelves with groceries on them, etc.  How a manager of a facility would let this go on I don't know, but if a fire had ever started from a hot plate there would have been hell to pay. Then they stop paying and up it goes for auction.

"Homeless" guys like this can apparently afford $100 or so a month for a place to stay (at least during the days) but staying overnight would be a problem unless they had some help from the property mgr looking the other way.
