Nevermind, just looked on ebay a few weeks ago when I looked hadn't seen any listed. See one going for $330 but some as low as like $260. Figure I'll try to get $300 out of it.

What's it Worth?? / In Focus Projector Model 2102 -- WHat's it worth?
« on: April 17, 2011, 08:22:57 PM »
I have an In Focus Projector Model 2102 I'm tryign to get rid of. Trying to figure out a price. It has the carrying case, all directions wires and cords. Don't belive it's ever been used as everything is factory sealed.

I know the price of these things has come down quick in the past few years but was thinking it woudln't be unrealistic to get $350 from it. Had it on craigslist adn no bites really besides maybe one email.

Havn't been posting it religiously but have posted a few times.

I been not wanting to go to ebay as it's a pain, alotta fees and I'm scared of selling anything over $50 on ebay these days. Just curious what I can realistically expect to get. If I gotta go lower than $350 I dont wanna go to low wana get as much as I can. Any other ideas besides ebay and craigslist?

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Any suggestions when you see a safe?
« on: April 17, 2011, 08:19:03 PM »
Safes may hold valuable thing but even not got some good scrap metal weight there but if its a nice safe could either try to get codes or have a locksmith drill it out. Not sure if it would be cost effective to hae that doen to put a new locking mechanism on but something to look into if its one of those nice cast iron ones.

What's it Worth?? / Anyone know anything about Pokemon Cards?
« on: April 17, 2011, 08:16:43 PM »
I think I made a post a while back about Pokemon cards. I finally got around to putting them up on ebay. Had about 1000 cards so broke them into 100 card lots and listed them on ebay.

Didn't know what to describe so took pics of every card, big pain there. Overall doesn't look like they sell on ebay though occasionally there are some very high priced cards sold. I don't have a clue what to look for though.

I got them listed and pics taken now, if anyone knows about them shoot me a message and I'll link you to pics.

The other thing, if there was a facility that sometiems had auctions sometimes owner just kept the stuff woudl you wnt to go to those auctions?

Sure its possible the owner is just a collector so say maybe anything besides motorcycle parts he's not interestd in but if the owner is out to make a buck like us you can be pretty sure any unit up for auction is crap b/c if it had anything of value he would have kept the unit for himself.

Interesting topic. I don't know the answer but can see justification for both ways.

I can see not having to have an auction b/c it could just be treated like abandoned property like in any other circumstance like roomate leaves crap at your place, your not required to store it forever.

However kinda makes sense to have an auction. I know storage owners cant legally steal peoples stuff but just seems like auctions make the whole thing a little more open and transparent, takes away the temptation of facility owners or managers from trying to gain soemthing themselves.

Alos, just curious about something. I know when they have the aucitons I always thought nobody could touch anything b/c it was still the owners unit until the auction was completed. In this case assuming an owner of a facility was going to take the stuff in the unit at what point does it become there's?

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Has anyone ever bought a POD?
« on: April 11, 2011, 05:17:10 PM »
Just curious, what would happen if a bank were owed?

Does the bank have any right to take the bike from the person who bought the unit? Obviously if this were the case you'd just keep your mouth shut and part it out but just curious.

Also, if a bank is owed would you have to pay the bank to get a clear title if thats even possible or is it just a parts bike?

movieman did you have to get anything new ignitions or were the keys in the unit?

Im surprised every time I see a motorcycle there's never a key. I keep mine in the ignition when I put it away forthe winter otherwise I'd never find it agani but I'm always surprised there's never keys with the bikes.

Just curious if keys were there. If not curious how much a new ignition costs for something like that?

That's always something I try to build into the price is how much will a new ignition cost me.

In my area pods are terrible auctions.

Not only do they heaviily advertise them but because all their "storage units" are at one or two main facilities there are normally alot of people who come out as opposed to regular auctions where they are spread out, some people dont wanna waste the gas or wont come that far just for a few lockers.

I went to one pods auction on christmas eve thinking it may be slow b/c people were busy. Over 300 people. I saw a pod with 4 mattresses sell for $1020.

Someone either thought the shows are real and it was stuffed with gold or someone thinks there is a market out there for $250 used mattresses.

I went home after like 3 units.

I have to say I was surprised like you said that certain items fetched retail prices. Why would you go to an auction, sit for hours, buy something that has not been tested, no returns, etc and pay the same price you could go to walmart and buy one for. I dont get it either.

This is only some of the stuff though. I was surprised a few Nintendo Wii's and Xbox Connects went for retail prices. There was also some camping equip that wasnt much under retail.

It seems like the small items that appeal to lots of people tend to go for high prices. When your talking larger specialty tools or gas powered equip be it concrete scuffers or whawtever that's where the deals are. I also got a pretty good deal on a home theatre projector only $200.

bikes were wierd. You'd see a Fisher 2k mountain bike sell for a a couple hundred bucks and then see a huffy go for more than walmart sells them for.

The Lounge / Gave up on my quest for junk silver
« on: April 09, 2011, 05:44:43 PM »
I had a post a few weeks back about check for junk silver. Not a bad idea to check coins you find in units as who knows how long they have been sitting there but just not worth it to get them in bulk from the bank just to sort through. They all come from federal reserve so most of the good stuff has been picked out already.

Bought 3k worth of half dollars the other day. Got one pre 1965 half dollar so 90% silver and another 1966 so 40% silver. Just not worth the time.

I know of one store in my area that does really well but it's not your typical resale shop more upscale stuff and lots of unique items.

I agree though overall I don't think its good for them.

I would love to run a resale shop someday. Personally my strategy would be to try to run a store and have walk in customers but I would really utilize craiglist. Many of the things that I personally think are not enough money to justify messing with craigslist, finding common times, meeting up, etc I could then list on craigslist and have people come by teh store to pick up since I'm sitting there all day anyway.

I agree though I don't think its a great time for this type of business. A few of the other shops I go to have been pretty dead lately and h avn't been buying as much stuff.

Anyone on these boards actually own a brick and mortar retail shop?

Just curious what your opinoin is. Do you think shows like pawn stars, auction kings, storage wars, pickers, etc has helped or hurt your business?

I was just curious?

I can see it helping in that more people are looking for bargains, interested in antiques and collectibles, etc however at the same time I can see it hurting as now your competing at auctions with all these people who before would just buy retail from you.

Also, with so many people going to storage and other types of auctions so much of the stuff that previously people would have gotten from you they can now get from someone else off craigslist who doesn't have the expenses of a brick and mortar store?

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Stolen Property
« on: April 04, 2011, 06:54:22 PM »
First off how woud you know it was stolen to begin with, you being the person who bought the locker?

Also, even if you did somehow know it was stolen the only way anyone else would know is if you contacted the police.

Aside from items like cars that are actually registered and have a paper trail you probably wouldn't know to begin with and even if you did know you woudl have yourself to blame for contacting someone about it.
