Craigslist / Re: Craigslist Flakes...Let the 2013 Flake Count Begin
« on: April 22, 2013, 08:29:14 AM »
I hate dealing with people like that.

We all do of course but losing our cool doesn't really pay off either. It's unlikely, but those flakes who waste our time (as in Travis' case) might actually have a change of heart and come back.

I agree that one should stick to one's guns on pricing pretty much. If I am asking $350 for something and someone has driven 30 miles to see it they most likely will go for it at the asking price, but in watching the scene play out one has to adapt.

I once was asking $350 for an item that is rarely listed (and costs $1000 new) and the woman said "Would you take $300?". I said "No, the asking price is fair when compared to the new price". She said "Are you sure?"  That was the first time I had been challenged on a scene like that and I thought I had lost the sale, but before I could counter with "I'll take $325." She said "How about $325?" so it all worked out.

That was on a "pick" for which I had paid $50, so was more than gratifying.  Getting the same kind of result on one piece from a locker buy that had maybe 10 to 15 great items obtained at a good price is equally satisfying, but once again the "picking" is looking better all the time.  One of my cronies has been doing picking full-time for four years and another gave up auctions two years ago and picks full-time as well.

I read the return policy (see below) rather quickly, but it LOOKS like you might have a case for returning it despite the as-is clause. If it was on eBay they definitely would side with you.

It's really not a bad unit. The shelving, the delta saw, etc. There is some real value there for the right person.

If this were for sale in my area I THINK it would sell for $1,500 to $1,700. That would be based on what could be seen from the door and peering back in as far as possible. The gamble factor would also kick in. Only 7 days or so to see what it sells for....if it sells.

His estimate of it being worth $5K seems high to me based on what the dozen pictures show, but that might be part of the difference in seeing in 3-D live as opposed to 2-D on a computer screen.

How much did you pay and what would a new similar version have cost?

One of the ladies did come up to me later when I returned to start cleaning out unit to say thank you, and that they will not forget the goodwill.

The goodwill with the mgrs could easily be worth the $300 or more....not to mention just plain doing the right thing considering the time element involved of her showing up at the last minute (plus).

Wish I could go to an auction with total of 3 people. That hasn't happened to me for years. The place it did happen now has the usual crowds.

Another private seller just listed an auction on VirtualStoageAuction.com. This is a good example how the private sales will work....plenty of inventory for the right person.

Ah, another lister and on this one we only have to wait 10 days to see the outcome !

Hooray!

I'm back in the game. Bought my first locker of 2013...the first since mid-December, 2012.

It's a 10 x 30 for $130.  Don't get excited. It was one of those that had been picked over when the tenant moved out, but enough "good" stuff was left behind to make some profit.

The 13 lockers that were sold actually had some quantity and quality for a change and this was at a place not known for that.  The other lockers were decently priced too. One regular got a packed 10 x 15 for $700 and that seemed OK for what was seen.

Another 10 x 15 with good looking furniture and no smalls went for $750. It was a bidding war between two regulars and the guy who got it should have stopped. I think he will break even....could have dumped it on the other bidder at $700 but didn't use his head.

One 10 wide by 5 deep went for $450 with some beat up tools showing. I would have paid maybe $200 to make some money.

So, a couple of things for me and the rest for sale, and even though I enjoyed the cleanout (not yet done) it reminded me of the difference between lkrs and picking...I'm still going to concentrate on picking!

Really puts things into perspective.

You got that right and the Boston bombing is even worse as someone there CHOSE to hurt random people in a crowd for who knows what obscure reason.

Crappy month here.

Same here. Went to 3 auctions today. First place had 6. One went for $250. I would have paid $100. Others not worth mentioning.

Second place had 6. All bad and prices were high for bad. Five x ten lockers with hardly anything in them went for $75 to $150.

Third place at 2 lkrs. Both bad. I didn't stay around to hear what the 2nd one went for.

There was a crowd of about 40 at the last two places. Six familiar faces. The others were newbies and I mean new. I didn't recognize any of them.

****

One of the regulars who started 9 years ago at same time I did usually buys about 8 lockers a month and he travels in a radius of about 80 miles, buying all over. He told me today he has bought ONE in the last four weeks. That should tell you something about the quality of the goods in my area.

Another regular of two years bought a big tool locker about six weeks ago and figures to break even...paid too much. His only other purchase was for $250 about 3 weeks ago and he said it was all trash.

Oh, well.  More auctions this month...maybe things will get better...or not.

Just when you thought it was gone for good,  the original Storage Wars is back for another season. New episodes begin Tuesday the 16th.

Today's the 17th. Guess I missed them last night. Oh well, there's always RERUNS, RERUNS, RERUNS.

Craigslist / Re: Craigslist on iPad

My point was that there are other tablets that do the job. It was not to knock the benefit of a tablet.

And to further that point, it looks to me like Clist dropped the ball on getting their app to work properly with the iPad. Can't blame "iJunk" for that.

That's what you get for buying into the iJunk hype.

The iPad has been one of MY best investments, allowing me to research single item buys at flea markets, yard/estate sales and even piece by piece auctions where the pace is not as fast as a storage auction.

I've made good, profitable buys based on what I got from it, and I've avoided buying things I might otherwise have bought just based on what I "thought" about them.

Steve Jobs was a master marketer and knew how to get products developed and sold. Travis should have it so good !

No app.

Works straight from Craigslist.

OK. I've had a Clist account for years now and as I said before I always post from home.

Is the difference for you now that you have JUST NOW gotten an actual account?  Sound like it from your description of not having to answer emails to post, etc.

Is this the case...you NOW have an account as opposed to not having an account before?

I know you've been fighting this for at least the 1.25 years I've had an iPad.

I just use Safari and look at the ads I'm running or if I want to look something up for comparison's sake.

I still post both eBay and Clist from my home laptop...just more comfortable with that and the way I use pictures, etc.

So, you got  a new clist app from them or something?
