General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Canadian Money Can Be Worth Big $$
« on: March 30, 2011, 08:39:03 PM »
Canadian Dollar is actually worth 3 cents more than the US Dollar right now. The Canadian notes that seem to be really collectible are the notes from the 1970's.

I havn't done all that much reasearch into them as far as specific notes, which treasurers signatures on the notes make it worth more, etc. I would imagine smaller denominations in good shape are probably worth more than others. I think 20 is the most common note and larger notes dont get as much wear and tear but signles, 2's and fives I imagine wear down quick so if you find any in good condition may have some good money there.

General Storage Auction Talk / Canadian Money Can Be Worth Big $$

I often come across foreign currencies in suitcaes or just in boxes. More than anything else I find canadian money. Pretty much most canadian bills from the 1970's in decent condition are worth a decent buck.

If they are graded you can get several hundred dollars per bill. Even not graded in good shape at least $50 a note.

Came across a unit today with a couple 20's and a bunch of 2's

Mid West / Re: Auctions in Michigan today

I've been seeing a lot of these units with just one or two pieces of furniture in them lately. More so than before. I'm wondering if that was true what someone said in another post that they are letting people clear stuff out if they give money and then auctioning off the rest of the stuff.

In my area we have a few smaller auctioneers who do all their own auctions but some of the larger ones have several bid callers who do different auctions.

In my area recently two different guys stole accounts from the auctioneer they worked for and started their own companies.

Really doesn't make a difference to me except a new list to get in or new website to monitor. Just curious if anyone else has noticed this happening in their area?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 4....April, 2011

I was at an auction the other day where crowds weren't too bad. Maybe 20 people at the most where as a few weeks ago this same circuit had 60 plus people.

Prices weren't bad. Many units going for more than I'm comfortable paying but no more of the $1000 for a unit with regular household stuff like old cpu, 27" tv, etc.

True that ironman. I used to think I gotta get every last dollar out of every item but after sitting on some things having them take up space and then selling them for the same I could have made a few months earlier is a waste. Rather make a little money and clear room for more inventory

Yeah I think both formats have their pros and cons but I love sealed bid auctions.

It takes away that whole competitive nature of the auction. I think sometimes units go for more than they should just b/c both people get wrapped up in the auction or maybe some guy won a unit you wanted earlier and you want to get it now. For that reason I think units go for more sometimes.

Sure with a sealed bit you can overpay. I think I've overpaid several times but if you set a limit your comfortable with who cares if you overpaid if you got in at a price you know you can still make money.

If I had a choice I'd go to sealed bid over auction anyday.

The Treasure Chest / Don't foreget about the rural / semi rural areas
« on: March 26, 2011, 05:23:34 PM »
I ran into a lady I normally talk to at the auctions recently who I hadn't seen in a while.

She said she went to a few auctions in a town thats not in the middle of nowhere but about an hour outside of Chicago.

She said only like 5 other people showed up and it was a sealed bit auction. I guess only one unit but she said she bid $250 and got it and everyone else looked at her like she was crazy.

She said she probably overpaid as she was used to how things have been lately and how they are in Chicagoland area.

Just figured everyone even those who live in a major city have some semi rural areas within an hour or so drive. Maybe try hitting up those auctions.

If you do garage sales or flea markets set aside a few good titles to mix into lots.

That way you can do a mixed lot of some good some crappy dvd's otherwise you'll just wind up trashing some of them.

Unless it's a very new or very popular title dvd's go for pretty cheap on ebay so your $3-$5 may be sorta steep if your in any rush to get rid of these, if you don't mind sitting on them for a while I'd say it's doable.

I find that lots sell for pretty good on ebay. A lot of 10-20 dvd's depending upon titles will get you maybe $20 on ebay plus $10 for shipping.

What I would do is give mostly good titles nad throw in a few of the odd ones with each lot, that way your not stuck with a bunch of dvd's nobody has ever heard or or wants to buy at the end.

Lots sell pretty well on ebay and you can get a halfway decent price and get rid of them quickly.

Thanks for the link.

Here is a cut and paste from that site which I also found interesting.

It has came to my attention that there are new web companies taking my information and selling my auction information to "members". I do not authorize any of this abuse of my information. This information is listed here for my customers use and not for any other reason.  All information, rules, address's, etc. listed here is the facts of my auction and please disregard any information that you aquire from other websites.

For the companies using my info, it will not be tolerated and I'm in the process of contacting officials of the abuse, specially the companies selling my information. Please remove my info from your site immediately.

She doesn't have many auctions in the first place but good luck with that. All this is public information nothing wrong with people reposting it.

I understand where she's comming from in that she probably has people annoyed that tohers don't update info about cancelled auctions but the info she has is public, its not something that can be copyrighted or patented or protected in anyway.

The Lounge / Re: Anyone been to a post office auction?
« on: March 24, 2011, 09:31:16 PM »
I guess you buy palets of anywhere from 50 to a few hundred packages that have been lost, damaged, labels fell off while shipping, etc.

A guy at the auctions today was talking about them. I found some info online on how to get registered with gov to recieve the lists.

I'm going to check one out and see if they are any good if there's any comming up anytime soon in my area.
