Garage Sales / Yard Sale Time
« on: September 22, 2011, 07:46:42 PM »
Having a yardsale with stuff from first 6 units Fri/Sat. I know there is a lot of debate as to method but I think the most important factor is location/demographics. I have 4 tables of merchandise priced individually, about 400 pieces of clothing on 50 cent tables, 90 pairs of jeans on hanging racks @ 2.00 each and several winter coats @ 3-5 bucks. Already done 55.00 in sales the last 2 days from co-workers that couldn't make it during sale. Split advertising with neighbors who are participating, so cost was low. Will get back Sunday and let everyone know how it went.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: how many of yall do this full time?

BigBizz gives good advice. I think building contacts is a face to face operation. Go to all sorts of various businesses, introduce yourself and discuss how what you do can benefit them as well as yourself. I have had very good responses and they will often tell you specifically what they are interested in. If they show no interest, thank them and leave. Look in the classifieds. I found a guy who buys broken laptops and did business with him, and turns out my wife taught his kid in school. Don't be afraid to ask for referrals from those you do business with. If you can drop a name they trust, sometimes that makes all the difference.

Absolutely agree with TC & Rules. I started with my own van, own flashlight, and a 7 dollar tarp. Went to first auction with 75 bucks. By 4th auction i had scraped together 200 bucks and got 2 units that day. 2 months later I have bought 6 units and went to last auction with 450 bucks, all from unit sales. I have 30 storage totes, box of batteries for flashlight, box cutter, tools, 6 foot table to sort on,all from units. I'm amazed how you get what you need from units. Start with as little as possible and you won't feel as much pressure to produce results every time out.

Use a big Mag-Lite, have no trouble seeing everything with it, plus it will crack a skull if someone gets out of control.

For me, I have no problem keeping things from units if it's something that we needed or nice piece for our house. I give my daughters little stuff out of every unit, their joy is worth something to me. I have made very nice profits off my first 5 units so keeping stuff for free is great. Won't keep much out of the last one because I need to squeeze all I can to make some profit on it. There are no rules to how you operate your business, your own personal enjoyment has value to you. You have to decide where the that line is. Making your living at this is a different world than a doing this for a second income stream. I do it for the latter. Good luck and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Thanks for all the replies. I should have added that where I am in Tennessee there are no fees to dump, and I live 5 miles from it, so if I can make any profit and get something I need that's ok with me. Doubling my money is always the goal, but couldn't let this one go. I had thrown all the bags/boxes of paperwork aside and wouldn't you know there were a Life, Collier's and McCall's magazines from the early 1940's hiding in there as well as about 40 new Avon eyeliners that my wife said will bring 1.00 each. Going to shop the magazines tomorrow to antique dealer I sell to. This unit took a turn for the better. Going to a big caravan Tues, 131 units in ad, then I'll pretty much be done buying till after yardsale in September. Smalls arn't so small when there are hundreds of them. Good luck to everyone to finish Aug with a good unit!

General Storage Auction Talk / Got one today, but have a question.
« on: August 27, 2011, 07:08:09 PM »
I got a unit today and have been wondering what some of you would have done. 2 units and 12 people there, the first was mine, a 5x10 with 13 totes w/lids, a dozen small avon boxes, 3 christmas trees in box ( 1 a nice fiber optic lighted), small filing cabinet, bissel vacuum, and 2 electric space heaters that looked new and unopened was visable from the door. The totes had labels like winter coats, sweaters etc. I opened with $10.00 and another guy bid and off we went in 5.00 increments as i hoped to get it as cheap as possible instead of jumping it to try to scare him off. The totes looked like mostly clothes and I knew it was a woman's unit. I got it for $105.00. The facility was 2 miles from the house and cleanout took an hour. I've already gone thru everthing and looks like I'll make about $150.00 off all the stuff I got as it's mostly good yardsale items. I really needed the totes and I love these types of units. My question is how many of you would grab a unit like this mainly for the totes and the unknown.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Always looking ......

Just found this thread and wanted to pass along some info. There is a company in North Carolina called Replacements Ltd. that deal in china, glassware, silver and stainless flatware. They are a very reputable company that buys as well as sells. My family has bought china from them to finish a collection. In one of my units I found some stainless flatware that was a unique design and very heavily made. I checked their website to see if they dealt in this pattern and they did. I had 27 pieces (knives, forks, spoons) that they purchased them from me for $45.00. It cost me $7.00 to ship, so it was $38.00 more profit on this unit. If they deal in a pattern you find, even if it's a few pieces, check the website and follow the directions for selling to them. The process was very easy and their communication was awsome. Read all the information so you don't waste shipping dollars on something they won't buy like chipped or cracked china or bent flatware. Hope this helps some of you sell some items.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Research

I do not spend time researching individuals. I factor the area of town the facility is in and whether it's a man or women that rented it. By far the biggest factor is what I see from the door. The personal papers from my last unit painted a very sad and financially desperate situation, yet yielded many great items for resale. Trust your eyes and bid accordingly.

Garage Sales / Re: do you tag items at your garage sale?
« on: August 23, 2011, 04:05:22 PM »
I' m planning my 1st yardsale with all storage unit merchandise next month. I will put individual prices on most everything, except the .50 clothes table and a .25 table. I have always done this wth yardsales of personal items and rarely have to haggle over price. Seems like a lot more work to have to talk with every customer about prices than sitting in the garage pricing while having a beer or two. Westagbargains has a good point, some people are very shy and may walk away instead of buying if they must talk to you. I had a lot of Mexican and Arab women at my last yardsale that bought items and didn't hardly make eye contact. The bottom line is whatever works for you, do it. I know some of you will have many hundreds of items, so I understand your point of view, but I will see how mine goes and report the results. Great topic, thanks rfr.

Went to an auction Wed 8/17, a what a dissapointment. 17 lockers, 40 registered bidders and 12 totally crap lockers that went for $60-$125. Spent nearly 3 hours in the sun to watch people throw their money away. Only 2 really good lockers that a regular snapped up. Went to this facility in April for about same # of lockers and there were 15 bidders. That's 2 consecutive 40+ at weekday auctions for me. Caravan in 10 days with 131 units in the listing, will report on the crowd.

I got a unit last week for $125.00 that had 4 beat up rims in it. They each weighed 35 lbs and I got $111.00 to scrap them. Take everthing off them that's not aluminum ( valve stems, plastic covers, lead weights etc.) My recycler paid 80 cents/lb for this "clean aluminum" versus 68 cents/lb for cans and such. I could see the rims were for recycle at the door but didn't value them that high. They nearly paid for my unit which was fantastic as it also had a lot of new clothes with tags, new electronics, and many nice household goods. Being able to value scrap is a big advantage over your competition as I heard some mumbling about the rims being no good as they walked away from the door. I plan to watch scrap prices closely from now on to value items correctly. Hope this helps some of you.

Went on a caravan today and got a unit for 125.00, first location had 2 units and 40 people. Same number at second location with 7 units. I got the sixth one at this location. This was the largest non Saturday crowd I've seen. The usual weekday crowd is 10-20 people. I've noticed a funny trend with bidding very high on units with furniture and large items and most walking away from units loaded with boxes and totes. My unit had 8 full totes, 6 large boxes overflowing, several other boxes and 3 laundry baskets all full of stuff. Already found 2 computers, a lot of electronic items, a load of toys, a ton of sellable clothes and I've barely started. Only 2 other people bid on this. I love this unit!
