General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Storage retrieval auctions?
« on: August 06, 2012, 10:21:10 AM »
Yes, I understand they would take their valuables, what I am trying to find out is, is the furniture and larger items worth while (on an average) to bid on or is it total junk? :-)

Reality Shows about Storage Auctions / Re: storage hunters
« on: August 06, 2012, 08:39:06 AM »
I watched a few episodes this past weekend and had to laugh at how ridiculous the acting was and the fact that they found such marvelous items. It's like watching a few of the other auction "reality" shows on steroids! I have been to quite a few auctions in a few different states and not ONCE have I seen my regular auctioneers in those states. ;-) just saying...

General Storage Auction Talk / Storage retrieval auctions?
« on: August 06, 2012, 08:32:44 AM »
Could someone please explain what a retrieval auction is? They may call it something else but this is what I was told it's called. I heard it is when a person rents a storage truck for moving and fails to return it but leaves some of their items (things they decided they didn't want to move with them) so the storage company auctions them off. Do you know if it is worth a person's while to even go to one of these type of auctions? I kinda understand that most of the items would be larger household things and anything that would have been real good would have already been taken out by the owners. I have only heard of this type of auction recently so I would like to know if the info I am receiving is correct. Thanks for any info you can provide.

I am so glad I found this question and all the answers. It helps me a lot in deciding what to do with the items mentioned. :-)

I still think the show makes Texas look like a bunch of bumpkins! I really don't like the format or actually much about any of the Texas one.

It's actually the same as California. Except it gets hotter than California (at times) ;-)

Yea, I kinda feel sorry for some of the regs that seem to be paranoid. By no means do I blame anyone for whispering or anything and I think I understand why they seem suspicious when people talk to them. I know times are really tough for all and I watched units go for 800+ that should have gone for maybe 400 or so this past week and it was to noobies. I felt bad for one guy that felt he needed to defend being there as a nooby. I just told him to not feel bad and he was doing the right thing. He was watching, getting the feel of things, not bidding unless he wanted the unit (which he didn't).  I just hate that when I get excited for someone else's purchase (and I am sincere about it) I tell them they did good or that I would be all over that unit if it were mine, they seem to think I am a fishing for something.  I know we all have our own personalities and mine has always been that I am sincerely happy if someone does good. As hubby keeps trying to tell me, "At the end of the day, does it matter what they think of you? Just be yourself and continue to be happy."  ;) Times have changed over the past 12 years of buying and we just have to accept it I guess. :-)

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: How far are you willing to travel?
« on: January 23, 2012, 07:03:42 PM »
We drove about 75 miles to Oak Cliff ONCE...and I do mean ONCE... (had 36 units) the storage units were total garbage.  Trashy units throughout, but we didn;t know at the time of the location history which explains everything. Now we keep it to under 50 miles.

South West / Do you notice people seem bi-polar in 2012 at the auctions?
« on: January 23, 2012, 01:19:58 PM »
I am being quite serious and not trying to offend. I have come across regulars that the past few years have either kept to their little groups and barely spoke to anyone out of it or regulars that have been very friendly with all around. This month already I have been witness to regulars that were friendly, all of a sudden being very brash and sarcastic to people they have always been nice to.  I was surprised and asked one person if they had done something to offend and they laughed and said no, they didn't know why the other was being rude.  I have also noticed some that have been in their little groups (nothing wrong with it by no means) all of a sudden being nice and talking to "outsiders" at one auction and then snubbing people the next.  I was wondering if it's the pressures of the lack of goodies in the units that make it tough to stock their thrift stores or are they seriously bi-polar? Anyone notice a change in their area or are you maybe one experiencing mood swings? What gives?? I am a people watcher and this month has been more than interesting.  ??? ??? ???

General Storage Auction Talk / Not ALL Bidders are Rude...
« on: November 10, 2011, 06:24:26 AM »
We did auctions in Central California, moved a few years ago to Texas and started doing them in the Dallas/Ft Worth areas the past year again. We know a lot of people do not want to give info out as far as finding auctions. We all also know that a newbie is treated pretty rude and gets all kinds of comments (said on the side and most of the time not to their faces), glaring looks etc. from SOME regulars. Well, we met one gentleman that surprisingly enough was very nice. At first we thought he was a BS'r because he was actually telling us a few places to look for local auctions but sure enough he was giving us good info. (We were doing a lot of searching on the internet and printing locations but still missing some.)  We saw him yesterday at a small auction and he told us again about a site that helps with finding auctions. We signed on and it has helped us a lot. We are not competitors with him since he buys for 3 stores and we buy mostly for smaller units.  But, I feel that's not why he helped us, I feel it's because he is a nice guy PERIOD! There are a few out there I guess.  :-\ That's my comment for the day, just wanted to share a good thing.  :D

It wasn't the greatest of weeks for us. Went to Cedar Hills (Tx) for the beginning of the caravan and that area was really bad. So the next day we went on another got a unit for 150 and it wasn't the greatest but we will get a little above our money back. Then on Friday got up early for a U-Haul run in Dallas, it was all canceled because the paper apparently didn't post it in the ads. So, found a Public Storage caravan and got a unit there for 75. The items that could be seen were older dolls and dolphins collectibles. Well turns out it was a crack head and her crackhead prison hubby. lol All I can say is thank goodness we didn't pay a lot. Sometimes looks of units can be deceiving. ;-) But to top it off the one for 150 that we purchased now wants to buy some of the things back. (Got a call from the storage company), but we have already gone through it and a lot of it is in the dumps that wasn't salvageable. Oh well, won't be in contact with them anyway, they had too much "gangsta" ;-) junk and I don't want them to know me or my family...haha

Tomorrow is going to be interesting. Long day for auctions and it's supposed to rain with a little thunder. Maybe it will keep a lot of people away..  :D
