Craigslist / Re: cList....is dead!
« on: January 29, 2014, 11:33:58 AM »
My own feeling towards OfferUp, I have no facts or statistics, is that it more of an impulse buy kind of thing.  Items are usually "clutter" from around people's house.  They aren't resellers, don't price high, just want it gone.

Buyers see its just down the road, cheap, easy.....

Think most people just use app and that only shows items nearby.  You have to actually do some work to search wider area.

Anyway, I get the feeling people don't "search" for items but rather just watch what scrolls by and decide "hey I need that"

Nice tool but not for everything or to use as sole selling venue.  IMO

I guess it comes down to my geography again.   Lots of people.
Probably works best in the city.

And people buy anything when its close.   Saw a box of that disposable Tupperware stuff sell.  It was only $5 but still.  You know its just down the street, cheap....

I've yet to try listing any copper.  Seems big money items don't sell as well.

Tho, I should be listing on both OfferUp and CL.   Next one I have ready I'll give it a shot and report back on calls from one over the other.

OfferUp is killing it.  People seem to like the format better and it list things by distance.  Its local.  One mile, two miles......You know right off how close it is.

I thought it wouldn't be as good because there is only one picture and short description but people love it......

It is better for household stuff.  Things women buy.  Lower price stuff.
Don't see many tools or auto stuff moving.

I may hit you up on the streaming sites.   I was just unpacking some more and forgot I have a Wii.  I can use that to for hulu and Netflix too if need be.

Thinking right now its roku in the living room and PC and Wii in bedroom.  If I find I like a lot online and want to watch it in living room I'll use laptop.....

Picker's Paradise / Picks 01.26.2014

Picked a game table today for $100. Still with original leather top.   Made by A. Cutler & Sons in 1875.
They were asking $275 but was pushing end of estate sale.

It's being sold for (asking price) online for around $300-$400.   Tho, a restored one sold at auction for $800.

Also got some really nice antique copper pieces.  Kettles and what not.  Paid $40 for a box full. Should be able to get $200+  out of them
Best part is the recycle weight is more than $40.  It would kill me to recycle them but push come to shove at least I know I won't loose money....

Will try a post pics later.....

I'm pretty much just an estate sale guy.  I'll swing in garage sales if I'm driving by but don't go seeking them out.  Mostly what I'm into isn't really what I've found at garage sales.  Yes, I'm sure I've missed out but if I hit 3-5 estates in a weekend I usually end up with some resellable items or personal use items for cheap.  Seems like I have to hit dozens of garage sales to find one item.

Flea markets haven't been good to me.  They are pretty small and so mainly just end sellers. They want retail, it's why they're there.

Swap meet is a bit better but still a bit high priced.  And both are about an hour away.

I've only been to the auction house a few times.   Some good stuff for good prices but a bit out of my price range.  Like a lot of 10 monte blanc pens went for  $750.   Total steal since one I recognized and looked up was $500-ish on eBay (actual bids not just listed at).   But I don't really have $750 to be risking on an area I know very little about.

eBay / Re: Holy bat-shipping

I live by a sorting center.  So I'll end my auction on Sunday nights. Print label and go drop off.
Even tho it's closed they are still sorting.  So *usually* its outbound by 2-3am.

I had one that the auction ended at 7pm and somehow it arrived to buyer the next morning.  He was only like 50 miles away but still!   Must not have been very busy at PO that night....
And still no feedback!  I swear, No one leaves me feedback

Also, as soon as I get one bid I package it so at end of auction I just need to slap on shipping label.....

I made an ebay purchase at 9:47am.   At 10:07am I got a tracking number and message saying they got it packaged just as UPS driver showed up.......

15 minute shipping.   Now that's service!

Where I live 3-4" of snow isn't "still" BBQ weather, it *means* BBQ time.   Worst power grid ever.  Only way to cook is to fire up the BBQ......

In an effort to live more cheaply I've dropped my six billion channels from cable (and landline phone)
I have netflix, hulu and Amazon Prime that I stream off my iPad.  However, I enjoy working on my ipad while watching TV.  Can't do both.

In my room I just ran a HDMI cable from PC.  Stream off that.   But in living room I've been looking at the Roku.  Can get one for right around $50.

My other option is to hook up old laptop to TV.   But I don't really like having the wires going across the room and don't want to get up and search for things.  In my room I just have a wireless keyboard/mouse.  But that's not doing for me in living room aesthetics wise.  Remote would be nice.

Anyone use a Roku?  Pro's and Con's?

eBay / Re: Can't Sign In to eBay

Little late but I just tried and its fine......

Side note, I choose distant learning classes over actually having to show up on campus.  Several times I've been unable to access it.  Turns out the IT guys do updates and what not in the evening and weekends.  Um, hello?  People take online courses because they work!  When do you think they are going to be online?!

My only class that is on campus the professor uses the distant learning site for assigning/turning in homework. We keep missing assignment or he doesn't get my work.  Turns out the site isn't compatible with Windows8.  Office2013.  IE or Chrome and REALLY does not work with Safari (so no using iPad).

IT's solution: "Use the computer lab"

Why would you take online classes if you have to drive to campus anyway?   And are you open at 9pm when I have time?

Sorry.....I'll stop now....this has turned into a rant.......

The Lounge / Re: 25 Worst Passwords of 2013
« on: January 23, 2014, 12:34:24 PM »
Yeah, I have so many passwords I had to write them down.  On flash drive, encrypted and hidden.

Have to admit, I use some of those passwords but on stupid stuff that has no personal info and frankly I could care less if there was even a password at all.  Really, if some one wants to access my garbage bill and pay it, have at it!   The only info they can access is the same as if they stole my mail.  In fact, before I changed my password it was just my house number.   So. Basically, I can log into any of my neighbors accounts that have never logged on and/or changed it......

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Wondering if anyone sells on etsy.com?
« on: January 23, 2014, 12:14:11 PM »
I think he meant stuff you make using a 3d printer. So self manufacturing gun parts, clips, etc. using a 3d printer, then it would qualify as homemade.  ;)

Ohhhhh.   I get it.
Was wondering how he shifted from guns to printers.  lol
