New to Storage Auctions? / Re: How do you sell used watches?
« on: February 27, 2013, 04:27:19 PM »
I bought a large pack of mixed batteries from a tool place in columbia, sc.  I use it to check some of the watches that I think will sell.  If I put a battery in then the price is $10 or more.  If however I don't want to fool with it, is a cheapo, etc. I just put them in a box for $1 each.

Never thought of selling a box of them.  You doing it as scrap or parts on ebay?

anything thats messed up or i dont want to fix i usually put up as junk watch lot with the # of pounds in the title usually with a buy it now of about $4 a pound , I dont say anything about for repairs and dont elaborate on the condition of the watches

if you include  the ones that look like that might run with new batteries you mention that some will run with new batteries , a completed search on ebay will give you a better clue

oh semi important if your selling some decent watches on ebay too sell them after you get rid of the crap ones , not at the same time (I always check to see if the seller is cherry picking the nice stuff)

Around here (NC) you can pick up a truck for like $2,000-$3,000. They're usually older but running good. As far as parking, get creative! Talk with business owners with large parking lots, churches, etc. Ask if you can take up a parking spot or 2, during the week, somewhere out of the way. I'm confident that if you offer a church donation of $100 a month, you'd find a church that'll allow you to park during the week. If you're buying lockers or picking during the week, you should have plenty to sell by the weekend, so it shouldn't be parked.

As far as maintenance, if you figure your cost of renting over a period of time, say a year or 2, depending on your rental frequency, you'll find that ownership is far cheaper than renting.

That being said, you have to have a pretty consistent need for a truck. If you're renting once a month or 2, it makes sense to stay the rental route.

100 a month for parking a truck  is 1995 pricing , welcome to new york

eBay / Re: Brick and Mortar Ebay Services
« on: February 26, 2013, 08:27:00 AM »
Before I became comfortable with using Ebay myself, I used an Ebay Store. They are pretty picky about what they will accept. I think the store I was using would only accept items guaranteed to sell by previous history, & items that would sell for more then $20.

All the local Ebay stores have shut down near me in the last several years. There is one in a city 25 miles away. I talked to the owner and he said he only takes items he thinks will make at least $50!  :-\

#1 on the $50 and if you do something with a reserve they want their fees paid up front here

the rents and fees have killed many of the ebay stores around here , you can expect to pay almost 50% in fees for their services and they dont always do a better job of selling it .

The better ones go on ebay
the cheaper ones go to the flea market
the junk ones go in a box and sold on ebay when i have 5-10 lbs worth
i replace batteries and you can get them super cheap on ebay 10 batteries for $2 -$2.50delivered in a lot of cases
its a lot easier to sell a watch thats running than one that isnt
by better ones i mean things i can get more than $20 for

LOL
anyone seen the counterfeit sharpie markers yet ? ive seen both sherpies and sharpeis

I agree, there's nothing like a live auction; however, online auctions have some advantages. 1. You save gas by only traveling to the facility when you win a unit. 2. You have more time to research items in the unit. 3. You can essentially be at multiple auctions at the same time. Once more storage facilities get involved, I think things are going to get better for everyone.

I beg to disagree , once (If) online auctions become more and more popular  a decent room at a decent price are going to become things of the past

A little tale of online police auctions ,
when i first found the online police auctions I was bidding on lots of used bikes usually between 6-10 per lot , these for the most part were piles of crap but I would win them between $6-10 per bike and could make some money on them (by piles of crap i Mean needing parts , needing work , rusted to crap and even 1 with a bullethole through it)

fast forward 2 years the auctions took off  and the same piles of crap are now going between 30-50 per bike and the auction has gotten so lazy they dont even take pictures of the ones you are actually getting anymore

needless to say I dont buy any anymore

last time i rented uhaul was 19.99 for a van or small box truck plus 99 cents a mile
the medium box trucks were 29.99 and $1.59
the big moving vans were 39.99 and 1.79
dont remember what the insurance was

I thought about buying one at one time travis but parking would cost me 3 k a year ,insurance + registration about the same

for the amount of time id need one and the short distances i drive renting is the way to go
