New to Storage Auctions? / Re: questions from canada

I would be very carefull crossing the border with storage goods.  For certain do not do it without detail sorting first no telling what may be in the stuff and it may be hard to explain when customs finds some contraband how it came that you are smuggling it across the border.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Any suggestions when you see a safe?
« on: April 17, 2011, 11:33:41 PM »
About 95% of the time they are empty or hold nothing of value. Once in a while they will have something that is worth something in them. Rarely do they have anything of great value.  Most of the cheaper safes can be forced open in about 30 seconds.  A really good safe may require a locksmith and that adds to your cost. As others have said bid as if it is empty and if has some valuables in it then you did well.

Dr Becker, good tip with the 66-74 or whatevr that was. 40% isn't quite as good as 90% however I can't tell you how many I come across that are 66 instead of 64.

Do you know if this is the same for quartrer? Are quarters after 1964 still 40%?

Drew, as for how many its hit or miss. Sometimes I'll buy like 50 worth of coins and get 15 pre 64 coins other tiems I'm lucky to get 2 or 3.

Only halves are 40% silver quarters have no silver after 1964.

If you have anything with metal in it should be no problem to give it away on craigslist.  $170 a ton at the scrap yard now for low grade metal scrap.  Not much but it adds up.

Kennedy half dollars were 90% silver in 1964 but between 1965 and 1970 they were 40% silver. I find a 40% one every now and then but the 90% ones are not out there. After 1970 they have no silver in them.

I bought about 50 lockers in the last year

3 were super great one retuning over 100 times the investment

About 10 made about double the investment

About 20 broke even

About 7 lost my butt on.

Overall made a little for the year

When I took economics in college they taught us the time equals money.  The longer you hold onto something the more you need from it to really make money. I would rather turn stuff quick then sit on it for years.  I have plenty of stuff I have sat on to long so I do not always practice what I preach.  I would rather sell an item for $10 now then wait 6 month to get $20. Now on a $200 item I would be more willing to wait longer then on a $2O item.  A really cool item I do not care how fast I sell it. I have taken sellable items to goodwill just to make room before but they are cheap items.

My worst locker so far was a 10X30 that had flooded. It was another auction bidders trash storage so even if it was not wet it woudl have been bad. Cost only $40 but $200 at the dump gettign rid of all the trash included were 20 pieces of either matresess or box springs some soaking wet.

Found only one of these in a unit. I find a lot of ammo but this is a 50 caliber Armor Piecing from Twin Cites arsenal in 1943. Any 50 cal is neat but WWII AP is really cool.

eBay / Re: What items have you had -thrown off- eBay....if any?
« on: March 05, 2011, 04:45:08 PM »
I gave up listing gun parts on ebay.  They do not pay any attention to their own rules.  I have had a trigger guard pulled and a stock.  Both items they say are allowed. I had a friend have a rifle sling pulled as an "Assault weapon" parts. I now rarely list anything on ebay even if I am sure they allow it because of the idiots they have who monitor the auctions.

I managed to get $50 out of a set of Lenox china on Craigslist.  That's the best I have done on china and it felt to cheap, retail should have been $400 on what I had. . Most china is hard to sell unless you have a complete set and it is good brand.   If it says made in China it goes to goodwill, Japan, USA or England it may be worth trying to sell. I have some Ukraine made china right now have not tried to sell it but that is out of the ordinary.  It is a tea set and looks like it retails for about $150 bet I get no more then $20 out of it.

What's it Worth?? / Re: vintage leather gun belt and holster
« on: March 03, 2011, 09:09:52 PM »
I do gun shows all the time.  If I had that for sale I would start at $50 and not take any offers bellow $35 on it.
BTW last gun show I did I did great on cheap Jewelry from storage units, lots of $5 and $10 items sold.  I will take more next time.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: profiling a locker
« on: February 18, 2011, 02:35:56 PM »
I like buying big units cramed full becasue the price per cubic inch of stuff is generally lower. On the other hand a 5X5 stuffed full can have a lot of stuff in it. I once bought a 5X5 packed into the rafters.  It took 3 loads in my Expedition to unload.   That was after throwing the dead rat into the parking lot.  I always look at the ratio of big items to small in a huge locker.  I like small items much better so will pay more for a unit that I think has a lot of smalls in it and no or few large.  It only takes one item to make a locker a good one.  My preference it to look at how much stuff is in a locker not the size and try to minimize price per pound of good looking stuff. On small lockers I always factor in a $20 to $35 dump fee when bidding.  On big locker over 10X10 I figure a minimum $100 at the dump.  I have seen 10X30 foot lockers with less stuff in them then 5X10 foot lockers.  In Dec I got a 10X30 for $1.  It had a few big items and looked no good but I got $15 for a dreser and have a Harley wheel and exhaust system left. Dump fees on that one were under $20.

I doubt that you would ever get in trouble with the law for not returnring something.  All you need to do is say I must not have seen it. Also the way the law reads to legally be required to return it the items must either be marked personal or be in a box marked personal. I do not return 10-20 year old bills myself. Pictures, trophies awards anything with a name on it is a potential.  If I found a Sterling trophy it would not be a personal though. Most of the managers would rather you return nothing since over 90% of the people never come back. Once when I went to return some personals the manager said they had moved to Texas and allowed me to dump them in the dumpster.  I felt bad as the box was full of phot albums of the kids.  I have found nothing in some units other units a truck load of slides from trips around the world.  I would feel really bad about throwing out someones pictures since they can not be replced but on the other hand often times it looks like they have not been looked at since being developed.  I have 3 boxes right now I will try to reurn this week.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: profiling a locker II
« on: February 18, 2011, 02:16:58 PM »
Those may indicate a set up locker they may not. I bought a unit in Jan 2010 with two long guns showing not in cases but obviously not very valuable guns.  The unit was big.  Turned out to be the estate of a Medical Examiner.  I found a complete set of the Warren Commision Report in the original boxes with a state department address on it.  One box not ever opened. They sold on ebay for over $2K. There was a Omega 18K gold watch, a $100 cash, a few ounces of sterling and lots of other good stuff as well but no other guns.  Tons of crap as usual but i made money so just because you see somethign good does not mean it is a set up but remember what you are seeing may be all the good stuff.
