Seems easier to do with online auctions. Happens a lot around here too.

General Storage Auction Talk / Old Magazines
« on: December 28, 2013, 01:35:09 PM »
I have a TON of magazines from the 20's to the 80's to early 90's. A majority of them are National Geographic from the 60's/70's. I have about 10 from the 20's that are "The Carpenter" which is a union newspaper by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

Now that that's out of the way... Here's my question.. Many of the NatGeo's have little to no value, but if I remove the ads there is some value there. So, I'll be ripping ads out of those publications. The Carpenter... I have no idea the value. I can't find them anywhere. They're in pretty rough shape. But the ads in them could be fairly valuable. I saw some Dewalt, Skilsaw, Stanley Tools just to name a few.. Originals from the 20's could fetch up to $20. Do I tear them apart? Do I keep them intact and try my luck on Ebay? I just don't want to hang onto them forever..

Why are people blaming the post office for UPS and FedEx having delivery problems?

They just assume that it's all the same network I guess. The post office traditionally has been slow on their delivery times in December and into January as they catch up. Just the nature of the beast I guess. But the news has been focused on UPS and FedEx being slow which I guess people associate with USPS. After all, it is all package delivery..

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: New Years Resolutions Anyone?
« on: December 28, 2013, 01:18:11 PM »
I typically don't participate in New Year's Resolutions because nobody ever keeps them. I've never smoked. I do need to lose weight, but that's more of a daily thing than a resolution. I don't have any unhealthy vices like gambling or sex. If I were to resolve to do anything it would be business related, and what's the fun in that?

Maybe I'll resolve to START gambling, having sex with strange women, and smoking!

PayPal / Re: 1% Cash Back With PayPal Debit Mastercard
« on: December 28, 2013, 01:11:06 PM »
I get cash back on all purchases even though it says signature required. I use it for my printing business and do like $20k a month in credit transactions all online. Some have required a signed credit form for my first transaction with the company but not after.

eBay / Re: I just started an ebay store...

It is considerably less money ($0.20 for 30 days) to list 'Buy it now' items if you have a store.

I haven't had good luck with buy it now items. I list an auction with buy it now option when it's free. otherwise I just do standard auction listing. Could be that I want too much for my items as a buy it now.. but it's still about 60-70% of what the next cheapest is..

Picker's Paradise / Re: Dumpster Diving
« on: December 28, 2013, 10:48:18 AM »
Where I live we have a community trash bin area. I always find dressers, couches, chairs, kitchen tables, etc. In good shape too! Some antiques from time to time. That's about the extent of my dumpster diving.

You think that one is bad, check out this guy. He got 49 negative just in the past month, all because he wasn't shipping fast enough

http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&ftab=AllFeedback&userid=foxconnect&iid=-1&de=off&interval=30&which=negative&items=50

It seems to me that this guy needs an employee to help him get stuff shipped out! I've been slow with shipping especially with my last round of orders. But, I've been up front with my customers. If I can't make it in the 2 days that I promise, I just let them know. Most times they're cool with it. If they're not, I refund like 10% and that usually makes 'em happy. But with the news focused on UPS and FedEx not delivering on time, most folks are blaming the post office now.

Storage Treasures is very good at selling themselves. They peddle a bunch of BS and call it information. They are not an industry source of information. I think that SB & ST partnership will crumble just as it did with SUAL. As the craze of storage auctions fizzles, these companies will fall by the wayside and only the best will be standing. The best being those with the best information, or having something new to bring to the table.

SUAL is already learning this by expanding their auction listings to include police, estate auctions, etc. They know that storage auctions are phasing out and they need to stay relevant. SB will remain relevant because of the strength of their online auctions base. ST, I believe will be out of the biz and nothing more than a blog in a couple of years.

I actually subscribed to them for about a year and have since stopped. Too many times has info been wrong. I found myself double checking against other sites, legal ads, etc. Since they're expanding it may entice me to come back, but the price can't go up. I'm not willing to pay more than $20/month for information that I could work a bit harder for and get free.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Baldwin Keyed Locksets Without Keys
« on: December 28, 2013, 10:00:11 AM »
I'll give it a shot. It's a longshot, but since they all came from the same person, they could have had each keyed to match 1 key. I think candy machines do that because of efficiency for the employees. Some of those guys refill like 100 machines a day, if not more!

Depends on the type, subject matter, and age of the post card. If it's a post card with a car theme, good. Halloween post cards are hot now, as are hidden image post cards. If you pick up a post card with just people at the beach or something, not so good. Buildings that have since been demolished can fetch a pretty penny too.

PayPal / Re: 1% Cash Back With PayPal Debit Mastercard
« on: December 28, 2013, 09:50:50 AM »
I've had one for a couple of years now. It's a good deal. No fees, except for $1 ATM fee. Around here there are free credit union ATMs. So the only fee I'll have is $1 for withdrawals. 1% cash back on purchases monthly. Only on credit purchases though, so don't use the pin pad when you're prompted.

eBay / Re: I just started an ebay store...
« on: December 27, 2013, 03:37:30 PM »
This January, 2014 I will have been selling for 10 years on eBay and I never really saw the need for a store. There may be some other reasons I don't know about, but in this case ignorance is bliss.

I like the extra tracking you get in the sales manager. I also like the customer base building tools like newsletters, etc. I don't know if anyone actually clicks those options or "follows" stores, but I like that those options are there. I feel like having a store on Ebay brings credibility to your account. Especially ones like mine with lower feedback scores.

But the last 2 months now I've gone past my 50 posting limit and have run into insertion fees. I figure if I can get 3 x's the amount of free listings, with lower FVF's, it'll pay for itself.

eBay / I just started an ebay store...
« on: December 27, 2013, 10:17:06 AM »
So last night I decide to jump into an ebay store for the follow up features and more significant tracking/research features. Also the bump in insertion free listings and lowered final value fees. Now I'm putting up a bunch of stuff. Hopefully it pays off!
