Yeah that is kind of aggravating. On a positive note though, the DVR is your friend. I just set mine to record new episodes of my favorite shows, then every so often I'll sit down see what's recorded and watch away.

The electronic gizmos available now as opposed to even 10 years ago are phenomenal.

I got a new Tivo maybe 10 years ago (maybe more) and bought the $300 lifetime service. About 6 years ago the hard-drive crapped out. I bought a new one (with the Tivo "image" on it), installed it myself and it is still working today. The lifetime membership aspect is tied to the electronics not to the hard-drive so that works out great. I bought a 250 gb hard drive and wish I had gotten bigger, but it works fine. I just have to delete a recorded program now and again to make more space.

I won't go into details, but because of the satellite service I have I can't program this particular Tivo to automatically record programs based on what I've seen or haven't seen before and I miss that aspect.

When I got into the buying/selling biz in 2004 I bought a 2nd TIVO for $30 at a flea market just to play around with.
Got it home and lo and behold it had a lifetime subscription on it. I have it hooked up to a OTA antenna and it gets the locals I want. Two Tivos...flexibility for what I want to do.

For a while I was buying Tivos whenever I saw them at thrift stores, but after about 6 that were NOT lifetime subs, I quit doing that. I sold them and broke even or made a few bucks, but nothing big.  During that particular time TIVO had stopped offering the lifetime service; now I think its back.  The interface on those things is so efficient. They've hardly changed it over the years.

Yeah, this time. What happens if the next one isn't so lucky?

Then, like auction buyers, they pay the price for their indiscretion. Nothing in life is guaranteed...not even life. Earthquakes, hurricanes, lightning, winning the PowerBall, slipping on a trail. Some of these things are in our control and some not.

If the clues were better I would make an effort to find the treasure, but as they are the chest could be anywhere from Yellowstone Nat Park (or nearby at least) to the Santa Fe area.  The benefit for me would be new trails and outdoor experiences. If the treasure was in California I would truly make more of an effort, but Santa Fe and the other possible locations are a stretch.

The shows on the 18th and on the 25th were the end of season for. The shows on the 25th were 29 and 30 for the season.

I've mostly given up on when one season ends and the next begins, especially when they take an 8 week break (or more), put on a couple of new shows and then start a new season a few weeks later.  I'll still watch the original series but as many posters here have indicated...."the thrill is gone."

I have to opposite reaction. I think it shows the couple to be shallow when they can let a tropical vacation be ruined by the lack of a certain brand of coffee. They come across as a couple of spoiled brats.

We will have to agree to disagree,  but I'm relatively sure the intent was to "say" ..."this coffee is so good not even a tropical paradise can compete."

Maybe BWD can let us know what this sells for. When I have gone back to look at final sale prices on some of the lkrs he has shown us here the final bid doesn't show up after the sale has been made.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I think this is a very effective ad by Dunkin' Donuts.

It is a very subtle sell which shows a couple in a resort setting feeling very glum until their lost luggage shows up.

If you haven't seen it, here's a link.  And remember, I'm not a coffee drinker, don't know the difference between a cup of this compared to a cup of any of YOUR favorite brands. I am just talking about the advertising approach. If Travis could write an ad like this promoting his new website he'd win all the auction buyers over to his side.  ;D

Here's an eBay link to a recent sale of a Beatles collection. I THINK this might be the same one I sold for $85 7 years or so ago. I don't remember mine having 13 records, but the box was about 1" thick or so, so it might have been the same one.

If this was the same one I guess I should have held on to it for 7 more years. This one brought around $240 I think.
Some guys are asking up to $2,000 for similar sets on eBay (maybe lps and 45rpm sets of more than 13 records) That doesn't mean they'll get it of course.

Now - if you have that one special record in good+ conditon you can be talking 10, 20, even $50 for that one.  But they are rare.

About 7 years ago I got a nice hope chest in a locker and the one thing I remember from it was a boxed set of Beatles records. It was in a dark blue "sleeve" of about 4 to 6 records and as I recall they were pressed in England. I took this set to the guy I mentioned in the post I made above.  He actually had one in a glass case at his store and he gave me advice on how to sell it on eBay. He wasn't going to buy it from me as he already had one and I gathered he had it for awhile already.

I listed it on eBay and it went for $85 I think. That was the only big record sale I've ever made and I think I've really only sold maybe 10 single copy records in 9 years with them only selling in the $3 to $5 area for each one.

Names like Rolling Stones, Beatles, Monkees, etc do well, and if a Chicago or Dylan fan is walking by at the right time those and others would sell too, but it's really hit and miss and hardly worth the effort as Clist says.  Heavy, bulky, non-sellers, like most books .... at a flea market....sometimes OK on eBay, or try to sell them in bulk on Clist at as little as a dime or 25 cents each if you have say 100 to 500 of them...but they have to take them all at that price.

Can't you just see someone coming to look at 500 records and wanting to go through them to find the 5 they want at 25 cents each? !    You could write the ad on Clist to say something like....."This works out to 25 cents each, or you can sort through them and buy single copies at $10 each !"  ;D  That pretty much says it all to the record collector.

Now - there is one place that charges a deposit and then wants not just the unit "dust free" but then tries to have you clean the front walk of the unit.   Saying you just pushed out all the dust into the drive path that they now have to clean.

This is the kind of expectation that has me reacting the way I do. The managers at a lot of these places (not all) don't do much at all in an 8 hour day yet they want the auction buyers to do what would ordinarily be their job.

If they are at 85% occupancy (which might be about right at locations that are popular) do they not sweep clean the empty locker they rent to a new occupant?  If I sweep out a locker I bought at auctio and then it sits empty for a couple of months, do they get in there and re-sweep it before someone rents it?

Sorry facility managers...get off your often fat rear ends and do a little work yourself....before you move on to your next gig within the next year or two (some of these folks move almost as often as a delinquent tenant !)

The "Sealed Online Bids" site failed (well, merged with "Storage Battles") , and so will this one........

WHY, MAY YOU ASK??????

I'm surprised Travis hasn't answered these assertions made in reply #32 above which primarily assails online auctions themselves and by proximity Travis new website designed to service this aspect of auction buying/selling.

I haven't studied records very much, but for the most part they are (IMO) hard to unload. Like movies they are TITLE DRIVEN, or ARTIST DRIVEN more likely.

There are two shoppers who make the rounds at the flea market where I sell and that's all they buy. I once had about 50 assorted LPs that they went through....they bought one at $3.  I have seen them spend 10/15 minutes going through hundreds that one guy had and they didn't buy one.

Unless you get the Beatles White Album or something similar they are not going to be worth much and you'll haul them out a lot to get rid of them.  An independent record store might give you a dollar or two apiece and that means they will be selling them for $5 or so. I've done that before and the guy bought maybe 5 out of 100 I would take in. He had that store for the better part of 20 years and now he's gone.

So, from the sound of it there was no cash prize to be found. In the treasure hunt mentioned in the original post here there is a quantity of gold, etc in a real chest somewhere hidden outdoors.

While the odds of finding it are high, I doubt they are 175 million to 1 like the recent PowerBall lottery.

Part of the quest for this treasure is self-realization and exploring the outdoors. The young woman who got stranded overnight had an adventure and came out of it safely. So far no one has been hurt looking for that treasure. One fellow has made twenty outings looking for it....so far, nada.

Collectors go crazy for low mileage vehicles with original motors, transmissions, rear axles, etc.

Now all that is needed is to know if all those items exist.

1154
depends on the facility some just want the stuff out , others want it swept

I will take flack for this from some members here, but oh, well.

When I used to buy units this was an issue with some managers. With those with whom I had good relations it was not a problem, but off somewhere in the boonies it was sometimes.

My feeling on it was (and is) that:

1) When a regular tenant moves out the mgrs often don't expect it to be swept....the mgrs do it. They also check the door springs, sheet rock, lighting, etc. (well, not all of them do that stuff of course).

2) I should be responsible for taking out any physical objects and trash...and I did that.

3) I shouldn't be responsible for sweeping up the dust that has come in through the cracks in the place.

4) I shouldn't be responsible for sweeping up dead mice (no rats ever showed up) or their droppings.

5) I shouldn't be resposible for cleaning out containers of human waste. (when one manager insisted on that I indicated I would be placing a call to the city haz-mat team. He backed down.)

The Lounge / New Clue Offered in New Mexico Treasure Hunt
« on: March 27, 2013, 10:08:52 AM »
Several years ago a millionaire placed a treasure chest of gold, jewelery, etc out in the wilderness and provided clues in a book he wrote.  More recently NBC has featured this hunt over the last couple of months on the Today show.

Today a new clue was provided and you can see the clip and the story of a hunter who got stranded in a storm overnight looking for the treasure.

I have a special interest in this story for several reasons:  I love hiking in the desert, my brother lives in Santa Fe, and like all of us I love a good treasure hunt (but on a much smaller scale !). I'll be in Santa Fe this summer for a visit, but since the better half is also taking this trip only the hiking part will take place...no treasure hunting.

I should also tell you that the "clues" provided are pretty obscure...the two new ones released on the Today show in Feb and March, 2013 do little or nothing to help. They simply rule out a couple of things. One dealt with altitude of the treasure chest placement and the other with the fact it was not in a structure.
