Not crazy about the new layout. To me it's harder on the eyes and not as easy to see which topics have new posts.

General Storage Auction Talk / Found a good scrap gold calculator
« on: February 12, 2011, 05:31:26 PM »
I was about to post a question myself asking for someone to link to a good scrap gold calculator but wound up stumbling upon one myself.

Do a google search adn a lot pull up but some don't work, some are confusing.

This one is easy to use and straightforward. You just gotta enter gold price and then they have slots for 10k, 14k, etc. You put in how many grams you got and they figure out spot price for you.

This is a great question, I was almost going to post something similar although I guess more of a rant than a question.

Oftentimes I either can't make it to an early auction or don't want to as it's too far from home, not a good city for units, etc.

I generally have the auctioneers phone number. Calling them is the best option although still they don't really know where they are going to be at what time. Kind of depends on how quickly the auctions are going along, how many units are auctioned off, how bad traffic is getting from one place to the next.

You dont want to be that annoying guy calling him multiple times so I generally call and ask for a ball park time.

Somtimes I'll do the same thing but call the storage facility.

Truth is your not going to get a real accurat time as even the auctioneer and facility don't know. Your going to end up waiting around. This can be frustratnig but is the price you pay for not following the entire day.

The best option would be to make friends with someone else who goes to the auctions, exchange numbers and ask them to give you a call when they are on their way to the facility you want to go to.

Aside from this your giong to be waiting.

The Treasure Chest / Re: Las Vegas bonanza...a real story of casino riches
« on: February 10, 2011, 11:35:35 PM »
Speaking of las vegas riches...well not exactly riches but making some money off nothing.

Was cleaning out a spare storage room of mine the other day where I keep personal stuff as well as storage stuff. Found note pad from the Stardust Casino with a hookers number on it from a trip I took with some buddies years ago. Was bout to toss it in the trash but figure Stardust being demolished I'd put it up on ebay and call it a piece of las vegas history. Sure enough sold for couple bucks lol.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Whole Bin or By the Piece?
« on: February 10, 2011, 10:59:57 PM »
I think for the most part auctioneers or storage facility managers are probably honest and things being taken from units is probably not a big issue. I still think it's probably more common in bin units than full units.

That said that whole issue aside I just don't like hte idea of bin auctions. I think it would take too long for everything to be auctioned off.

Also I think prices would tend to be higher sicne more stuff is visible.

Most importantly to me it kinda takes the fun out of the whole thing. I like buying a unit and finding things in the back I didn't even initially see. I think bins kinda takes a lot of the surprise out of it, alot of the fun out of it.

Though I do occasionaly hit up different types of auctions, going out of business sales, etc I prefer storage auctions. Doing bin auctions to me is more like a regular auction as opposed to the unique aspects of storage auctions.

What are you English? Odd choice of insults. Also, no need to be so hostile.

I know the law is you guys cant go through stuff, thats not to say it doesn't happen. I dont think it happens as often as some may think but I imagine the temptation of some is ther, even more so when they are allowed to go through the units to make the bins as opposed to regular acutions where your really not supposed to be going through at all except maybe making an inventory of things in plain view through the door for the ad.

Bin units, not only would it take too long but with good stuff in plain view prices will be higher. Maybe I find a unit of old clothes that I get for $50 could be a jewelry box in there and I make out good. If the jewelry box is right out in plain view I'm not gonna get that bin for $50.

I would never go to a bin auction, I think many others on here and in general feel the same way for a variety of reasons.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Lookey Loos Part 2...February, 2011

I imagine laws probably very from state to state but in my state and at auctions where I'm freindly with teh auctioneers I was told they don't make a commission they just get a flat fee for facilitating the auction.

I'm not really big into auctions besides storage but I believe thats what differentiates a bid caller from an auctioneer, auctioneers do tehir own marketing, run the auction make a commission, bid callers just run the bidding.

Also, more money for a unit in my state isn't more money for the facility. I believe they get whatever they are owed in back rent, fees, late fees, etc but the remainder of the money by law goes back to the person that owns the auction.

it's good for them to get money so the facility gets all they are owed but over and above that I dont think they get to keep any of the money. At least in my state that is.

I can see if maybe in advance you decide to form a partnership, agree to terms how to split things up, etc. Still like you said I see one person doing more work than the other and that causing problems or fights over money and items.

I can see planning this in advance but oftentimes it's in the middle of an auction price is at like 600 and a guy will come up "Hey dude, wanna go half on this?" With really no discussion of terms how we will split stuff, etc.

For a large unit full of stuff I woudln't trust someone I didn't knwo that well not to steal soem good stuff out the unit, to give me what I'm owed for stuff he sells on his own, etc. If it were a car, motorcycle, construction equip or some big thing thats easy to keep rack of , easy to sell, I'd be more likely to do it.

Just curious if any of you ever run into this.

I'm friendly with a few people I see regularly at the auctions, we'll talk, hang out, have a smoke but not friends outside of the aucitons.

I've had a few of these people apprach me before trying to see if I wanna go half on expenisve units with them.

I wouldn't even consider this. I'm friendly with these guys but don't know them from adam and even if you did trust them which you shoudln't I can see problems when it comes to how does that work? Do you split the merch up and sell it on your own and keep profits or sell it together adn split all profits. Just seems like nothing but trouble.

I can maybe see doing something like that on a unit with say a car in it where its an easy item to flip, one thing to get rid of, ownership can be documented, etc but woudlnt do taht on unit full of items.

I did say if anyone responded. Sonoma PM me with your city or zip and I'll let you know about a few auctions in your area. I saw a few other posters on the boards tonight as well maybe this thread worked...lol.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Antique Bamboo CHair from the Phillipines???
« on: February 08, 2011, 08:13:18 PM »
Havn't really gotten much new info. Taken it to a few upscale resale shops, they all like it and say its nice but its so unique and strange that it doesn't really go with many peoples home designs probably so none of them really want to take it, not even on consignment. I could probably get rid of it on craigslist for $80. Actually was almost gonna do just that but a buddy came over and took a look and started talking about how unique it was I feel like I should keep it even though I really have no use for it....lol.

sorry didnt mean to call them auctions just hotel out of busienss liquidation sale

1169
I know this is a little off topic since were storage auction guys and not out of business hotel buyers but essentially we are all resellers so wodnering if anyone has ever been to one of these auctions?

I saw a newspaper article about a hotel going out of busines. they claimed they it was $25 for entire rooms, I got there and thats not at all how things were priced, it was like $28 for an end table. Basically not enough room to make it worth the trouble of loading up and reselling.

Did see a few bargains though. They had these CV1 Single Cup Coffee Makers. I think its a special model for hotels but I believe it may be made by Cuisine Art or Hampton bay.

Anyhow these were going for $3 a pop. I was gonna talk to the person in charge and see if they'd come down a buck or two if I bought all 400 or 500. Didn't find too many online but saw some on ebay amazon for like $30 new.

Anyhow, if anyone on these boards can move those things pm me and maybe we can work something out.  Hope thats allowed to ask for assistance on this forum, if not mods can delete this part of the post or take it down altogether.
