General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Bitcoins...near price of gold
« on: December 02, 2013, 06:37:18 PM »
I looked into Bitcoining a couple of different times over the last couple of years. I will probabaly end up being a "horse and buggy" guy over this, but each time I thought about getting in, there were either huge fluctuations in the bitcoin market or rumors about Federal Government take over, it just seems too risky to me.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Walking away from a unit
« on: November 22, 2013, 08:58:55 PM »
The one I walked away from was staged, in fact all of the 14 units they sold that day was staged.  I felt bad about it, but when a facility dumps there trash in a unit and sells it as someones personal stuff, that is misleading the public.  They advertised only 3 units up for auction, but ended up selling 14 units.  I'm sorry but as I see it they made no stipulations on leaving a clean unit, and if they are not going to be honest about what they are selling the heck with them.  Its not like I just walked off and stuck them with it.  I called and showed pictures of big dead rats in it, and let them know one did bite me...

How'd you get bit by a dead rat?  ???

Yet another author tells how to make money in this business.

I've probably bid against her on those units too!

He is focusing on 1-on-1 and small group online training in business entrepreneurship. Everything from the re-sale/storage auction business to self publishing to internet based business creation. He has gone away from the storage auction business somewhat to keeping up with and informing people on what the new cutting edge trends are in entrepreneurship especially related to web based or information technology platforms.

Suggestion Center / Re: December Posting Contest

By-the-way,

This contest is slanted completely in Movieman's favor. He doesn't even buy storage units anymore! He just sits at home and plays on his computer!  :)

I got a better contest. Let's see whose book about the storage auction business gets found in a storage unit first. Yours or Glendon Cameron's.

First person who finds either book in a unit, post it here!

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #11.....November, 2013
« on: November 17, 2013, 06:26:47 PM »
Not much new in the scene to mention around here. I will say prices and crowds have crept up since summer time. We seem to be in the full spectrum of the "new" normal. Light crowds, junk units will go reasonable to cheap. Large crowd, even junk units go too high. Good looking units, light or large crowd they are gonna go high. Even with a small crowd of mostly regulars there will always be some schmuck who will run a half-way decent unit up towards your max bid before giving up. There always seems to be a handful of newbies who have got in there head they are supposed to bid into the high hundreds and thousands on units. My guess is they are not all newbies but many are those who have dropped in and out of the auction scene since the TV shows. They may show up for an auction or two then disappear for 4-6 months, then pop back in, run units up, etc. Wouldn't be a problem if there were just one or two who do this but my gut tells me there's probably around 25-50 in my area who pull this routine.

Scattering roaches await you soon...

A stranger will threaten to kill you, then ask for her kid's toys back please...

Cardboard boxes in the hand are better then plastic garbage bags in the bush...

Your lucky numbers are...who will give me $100, now $200, I have $250, $400!, I got $500 over here!...

The mold always grows on the dark side of the furniture...

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: It took forever to sell
« on: November 05, 2013, 05:31:49 AM »
I finally sold this student violin that I've had on Craigslist for 4 months. Started at $100, then reduced it $90, then $80, then $70 and finally $60, which was my bottom line. If it didn't sell at $60, I would have rather kept it. Another month goes by with no calls. Finally, yesterday a guy came by and took it off my hands. Are violins / musical instruments just slow sellers?

What item(s) have you had that seemed like they would never sell?

One of the issues with selling musical equipment is you really have to be able to detail it's cosmetic condition and it's playing condition. When you are not able to play the piece yourself and accurately describe any tone issues or parts of the  piece that might need servicing, it's hard to get top dollar. Just because it "looks" good to the layman doesn't mean it's in proper playing condition.

Weird & Wacky Finds / Re: Locker owner wants leg back
« on: November 05, 2013, 05:25:43 AM »
Bought a unit last week and while cleaning it out the facility manager rides up on her golf cart. She told me that the locker's former owner requested that I return her prosthetic leg.  :o

Now, I'm usually always willing to return personal items like that but it got me thinking. If you needed your prosthetic leg, why would you put it in storage for over a year? Also, some of these prosthetic legs can be worth thousands while others are giant paper weights. I haven't found the prosthetic leg yet, but when I do, I'm going to have it checked out.

Anyone ever sold a prosthetic?

I had one I carried around for about 6 months. Older model leg. I thought for sure someone would buy it for a Halloween prop if nothing else. Finally donated it to Goodwill. Although I never pursued listing it on Ebay, probably should have given it a shot there before chunking it.

Craigslist / Re: Do you get more text messages than calls or emails?
« on: November 05, 2013, 05:09:59 AM »
I would say over the last year, maybe year and a half the most people have shifted to texting to follow up Craigslist ads. Emails are seldom used, and actual phone calls are about 30%.

What's it Worth?? / Re: Best way to sell scrap silver
« on: October 31, 2013, 05:12:09 PM »
I think you put a circle in your question?

Do you want to know the best way (highest yield) for selling sterling silver? Or

Best way (highest yield) to scrap silver?

Realistic yields for selling scrap sterling silver is going to be 75-80% of .925 times spot price of silver for the day.

There might be on-line websites for refiners or Ebay that will get you closer to 85-90%. (documented  :()

You will always do best to find a collector who will pay 90-100% of spot price any given day.
