New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Washer / Dryer and other scrap metal
« on: August 10, 2011, 06:12:52 PM »
I took a washer and dryer to scrap 2 weeks ago and got 23 bucks for them. They picked them up with a forklift and dropped them on the scale, 232 lbs @ 10 cents a pound. Take the dryer pigtail off and resell it if its in good shape because they are not cheap new. I'm in Tennessee.

No hard feelings ChefJ. I don't care for unions either, especially in govt. Ronaldus Maximus is also a hero of mine, miss him greatly.

Chefj you've been sniffing to many fumes in the kitchen. ::) First, the P.O. lost approx. 8 billion in fiscal year 2010. Second, the P.O. does not use 1 dollar of taxpayer money ( Postal Reorganization Act of 1970). Third, the P.O. kills UPS and Fed Ex in shipping costs on small items (1st class), Priority and media mail. Fourth, privatization of the P.O. will end universal service to every box every day as many areas will not be profitable. This would have a major negative impact to our online businesses. The P.O. has many problems no doubt, but lets get some facts in the conversation.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Wish people could just be honest
« on: August 05, 2011, 05:55:10 PM »
I was looking for a business to start in addition to my job and was having no luck until I saw the show. I have started 3 businesses in the past, 2 failures and 1 success that I ended up selling. I spent the first half of this year getting everthing ready ( changed work schedule to free days, prepared storage space, studied the auction business, worked on a number of sales ideas and observed auctions). My first full month was very good but it takes working at it every day and it's hard work. Most people won't last long term because they will not do the daily work. It' rare to get the the expertise needed to be successful as easily as this forum provides. Thank you to everyone. :)

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Children at Auctions
« on: August 03, 2011, 11:07:30 AM »
My daughters (14 n 12) like the auctions and I like taking them. They carry all my stuff (locks, towels, etc.) in a backpack and hold the umbrella to block the sun. It's like having an auction caddy, just hand me the flashlight when we get to the door.

eBay / Re: Anyone Burned on Fee Bay ?

I asume you are using US Postal Service, I would not use delivery confirmation as proof of delivery. A del con only shows time and date it was delivered, but I have seen them misdelivered many, many times especially if they fit in the box. I would use Signature Confirmation which records an electronic snapshot of signature and address. If it is very valuable, send it Insured w/ Return Receipt to have signature in hand. If you have Post Office questions thats where I work and will answer as best I can. International mailing can be very sketchy.

I have worked for the US Postal Service as a clerk for 12 years (no jokes please, I've heard them all ;)). Currently I work 2-10 AM sorting packages. Worked this shift for 10 years until my job maintaining and operating high speed letter sorting machines was eliminated. Took 2 years to get a chance to bid back. This shift works for family and auction hunting. I have a BS degree in biology but went to work with the Post Office to quit traveling when children came into the picture. Live a mile from my office and never looked back. Not a fan of union workplaces so I live in constant conflict. Auction hunting scratches my capitalistic itch.

What's it Worth?? / Re: What is it (3)?

Just Googled test tube cases and found 1 with very similar holes in 1 section of a larger box. I think the medical/chemist angle is worth investigating also. Will let you all know what I find out. Thanks.

Finally got a break from the heat today. Went to another silent bid auction in the pouring rain with 15 units. Missed on the 2 I bid on and got soaked, but at least I didn't sweat. I really hate silent auctions. There were 30 people, giant umbrellas and kids playing in puddles, but the best were the knee high weeds growing in the cracks in front of the units.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think the metal die route looks like a possibility. The box has clasps on both ends and has what looks like a label holder on the front. This could have been one of a set. I've gone to 2 antique dealers that couldn't tell what it was but both offered to buy it. The large hole could have held a tool. There are 14 small holes in 2 rows of 7. The other suggestion was a medical vial case for a doctor to carrry. I'll keep researching the die route. I just hope it is of some value to someone.
