Went to an auction on Thursday and saw two die-hard regulars in a bidding war over a full locker 10x30. It got to 4900.00 until one backed off. That was my highest auction bid to date. The winner couldn't lose on this one. It was packed with great looking furniture, alcohol (boxes), tools and lots more. That was just at the first 5 or 10 feet that we could see. Hope the back 20 feet was as good. I think it was :-)

New to Storage Auctions? / How Do I Find Schedules for Auctions??
« on: September 19, 2011, 09:16:51 PM »
I understand they have to post, by law, two weeks in advance for storage customers that they are in default of contracts before they can do auctions...in Dallas Forth Worth area does anyone know what resource I can use to find these postings? Is it just newspapers or is there sites online? Thanks for any help.  ???

Garage Sales / Re: do you tag items at your garage sale?
« on: August 28, 2011, 06:05:34 PM »
We had our yard sale this weekend and we tagged most items but they still asked how much. We did pretty good but it was 103 on Friday and 105 on Saturday so it was really tough after a few hours. Your brain starts shutting down a little.  ???  We are still learning about the yard sale and flea market buyers mind-set and it doesn't matter if it's brand new designer pants, 5 bucks was too much.. :D Anyway, Saturday we just tossed the clothes that were for sale on sheets and they picked through them. We told them, prices for jeans, tops and t-shirts and the more they bought the better the deal. Worked pretty well. Most of the larger items had tags, tires, couch, etc. and they sold very well. At least now we know we don't have to tag smaller items and that saves us lots of time.  :o

Hi Nate, Welcome and don't worry about the newbie talk. We were all new at this one time or another.  :P  Yes, the shows have caused the units to be bid up higher than they used to but in time people will find that most of the items in the unit are of no value. Most of it will be clothes, personal papers etc. The good units are few and far between.  I think the best way to learn how to bid and what to look for is to go to a few auctions and observe a couple of times. I will give you one hint right now though, look close to the door, if there are more than 2 or 3 locks broken inside, run do not walk, RUN from that unit.  :D The more the locks usually means the more times the clients have been able to enter the unit and collect most of anything that might be of value. Good Luck!  ::)

Hi Nate, I found the best way to learn is to be there and watch. The first couple of times I made it to the auctions, watched the bids and what was in the units to see what I might be interested in. At first I didn't want the larger units but after you go a few times and find reselling venues you can decide if you wish to bid on the larger ones or stick with the smaller. Good luck, we all have to start somewhere, don't we?? ;-)

South West / Re: Dallas / Fort Worth Area

Howdy!  :)
I have been to two of the tapings and they only notify the storage managers the night before. There are 5 main characters so far, Bubba and Ricky, Lisa, Vic (from Longview area) and Roy Williams (yep, the one that was the DB for the Cowboys). The only thing I find bad is that what should take 1.5 max hours for larger auctions take 3 or more due to the retaping scenes plus the the units that should go for 150 to 200 go for around 600 to 800 for the show. They have had two auctioneers one being Jackie Sutton and the main one (I am gathering) is Walt Cade from Longview.  Hope this helps.  :)

Hi Texgal,
Yea, there are lots more people out, some lookie-loos and some bidders that watch too much TV ;-) I have been to a couple of tapings for Storage Wars Dallas (not knowing they would be there) and even though the storage managers don't know until the night before (that's what they have told us anyway), there still seems to be a lot of people. The prices are ridiculous for the units with the film crew there. I have seen 200.00 units go for 800.00 and I just walk away shaking my head. But, even when they are not there I have seen units sell for way too much. I wish all the best of luck with their finds but hope people start to realize they might get a unit for less if they use common sense at times. I think it will just take a while for people to see that not all are treasures in those boxes and totes. :-)

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Too lucky on my first Unit?

That is a great 1st find! I have to agree with CopiaVita regarding the costs such as gas, food, hauling, listing on the internet (if not a flea market), time for separating items, washing to list or sale, trash collection etc. I also am not trying to burst the bubble but these are things people forget to tally. I have been doing this for quite a while and I have created spreadsheets to keep track. If you do this more than just a hobby these are things you might look in to. I have come across very good finds and very bad stinky finds. I hope you have lots of good luck storage hunting. :-)
