General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Post Storage Locker Gun Stories Here
« on: February 18, 2011, 02:10:23 PM »
I have gotten 6 complete more or less guns and and a couple incomplete guns in the last 3 years. Most have been junk. Most I got for any of them was $100 for a Winchester 370 shotgun.  I got a S&W revolver in a unit this year but it was missing all the inards and the grips. I still have it doubt I will get more then $25 for it.  OLast year I got a Spanish double with the stock broken off and rust all over it, sold that for $60 and was happy to get it sinc I only paid $510 for the unit. I find a lot of ammo and an occasional magazine but the guns are rarely in the units.  I do know one buyer who got a unit for $35 and found 7 long guns rolled up in a carpet. I did not see the guns so I do not know how good they were but that would be a great find even iff they were cheap guns.  If you want to buy guns go to a gun show your odds are much better there then at a storage auction.  I bought some contents from another bidder of a unit that was from a gun shop. No complete guns but a ton of stocks and parts along with a few tools.  I have done well on the stocks and parts on gunbroker.com. The orignal buyer thought he was getting a gold mine becasue there were about 150 gun boxes showing. They were all empty.

Some "Lucky" auction buyer got this unit a while back over in Bellevue.  Imagine what this guy thought when he started digging around in this unit!  Until he realized, uh oh, and they called the feds!

After the feds took the explosives and MGs the buyer was allowed to keep the rest. I saw the remains at the WAC show.  I think the buyer wholesaled most of the stuff off to a regular at the show. He must have cleared $100K on all the ammo and parts. If the machine guns had been registered there would have been over a million in guns alone in the unit.

I saw that news stroy.  They made it look to easy it will hurt the business again just when the unreality shows impact was stabilizing to.

I have found small amounts of gold and goodly amounts of silver but cash is better.  over $4K in a junky unit I paid $50 for mostly one dolalr bills.

About half the lockers I buy have evidence of drug use.  About half have letters from prison in them.  That should tell you something.

We are very lcuky here with TVs.  Goodwill has a deal with the county.  Goodwill takes them working or not and the county pays them like $5 each.  Of course it is covered by a tax on electronic goods but I have gotten rid of dozens of TVs that way. I no longer even try to see if they work unless it is an LCD or Plasma it is scrapped that means the easy to remove copper is removed then it goes right to goodwill.

Saw a Datsun 280Z in a unit. Had less then 10000 miles on it and was about 15 years old. Covered with dust and tires flat.  had been in the unit like 13 years acording to the managment.  Sold for $4000.  Assuming it could be made to run it should have been a great deal at that price it was a near new car but when a car sits that long there are issues with everything requireing lubrication. It may cost a bit to get it in shape to drive.

$1 is the least have lost money on some of them at that. $700 is the most I have ever spent on one.  Made money on that one.  I have paid about everything in between but my experience is that paying over $200 the odds of losing money goes way up.

I use an expedition with a 5X8 foot trailer.  When it rains only junk or weatherproof stuff goes in the trailer. I can get 6 full or Queen sized mattresses in the trailer or 3 mattresses and a couch. Straping them to the roof is a time consuming pain and risky as they may fall off. Before I got the trailer I would rent a truck if I had more then a couple big items.  I will say that hauling stuff in the Expedition beats the heck out of the interior.  I bought the trailer new so it was not cheap but i can haul 3 times as much stuf with the trailer as I can with just the expedition. The trailer is quickly paying for itself in saved time and gas.  When I rented a truck it normally cost $150 top $200 for a day. That included mileage and gas they are gas hogs and a couple trips to the dump would burn up a tank of gas.

In Washington it is state law that personals must be returned.  The managers tell me that rarely do the owners ever pick it up less then 10%.  I always return them just in case.  I have found massive amounts of personals in some lockers others have almost none.

No deposit on the places I do yet.  But as others have said if you do not clean out your units then you will be blacklisted no more auctions for you.

Not much, I did just find a couple bags of uniforms but they are 1990 vintage.  The helmet was there as well.  Did get a Ukranian peaked cap out of a unit once.  Also found a WWII era M4 bayonet for the m1 carbine in a unit but it was rusty and in poor shape.

Furniture, It has to be really cheap or really nice to sell around here. I end up giving it away on Craigslist most of the time if it does not go to the dump.  Clothes I rarely try to sell as everyone wants them dirt cheap even ofr new with tags.

Other then gold and silver scrap metals of any kind are easy to sell.  All the little Brass India made do dads from years ago will get you over $2 a pound and they will take as much as you have.

eBay / Re: Anyone have success selling clothes on ebay?
« on: February 01, 2011, 11:33:45 PM »
I sold some coats on ebay once.  The new with tags Carhartt went well like $40.  Most of the rest got no more then one bid selling at $9.99.  My opinion is only really good brands that are new will sell.  It is not worth it to sell items for $9.99.  If you get a bunch of the same size clothes that are new selling as a lot may work.  Some Jeans sell well most do not.
