Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Aukward Experience
« on: January 28, 2011, 10:20:57 AM »
Most of the auctions I have attended specifically do not allow the renter or any family member on the property when the auction is going on. Sounds like someone may have been trying to scam you.......

After all it is a TV show and they must have some drama to enhance interest so they have an a-hole, a nice guy and a virtual dumbass but as large as so cal is you can be sure everbody gets their fair share of auction wins but for the show they keep the format that creates drama.

:D Wow, what a poiece of crap from the production to the "actors" to the reality that didn't exist. That about sums it up.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What is trash?

Thats about as specific a list as anyone could hope for and right on the mark. I'm like you Doc I look for anything that I can sell (quickly) over 10 to 15 bucks and up, all else is trash or donate. No room nor time nor desire to mess with the small junk and definitely no soiled burned or ratty furniture.

Soiled clothes, food items, chemicals, porn, broken computers and appliances can usually be recycled so I donate that stuff for the tax deduction (not trash). Old matresses and box springs as most of that is soiled. Anything broken that would cost more time and money to fix than it's worth. Computer monitors and CRT type TV's, again donations to recycling so not trash unless the recycler charges to take them and some do................

The "Other" Job / Re: My full time "other job" is
« on: January 14, 2011, 07:56:20 AM »
I've noticed no one including moderators have answered this question. Is anyone really making a decent living doing this full time? If So, what dollar ranges? If so, how long did it take you to get there? If so, what do you do about health insurance? It appears to me that there aren't that many members on here that it would make a difference if these questions got true answers. Realizing that this is someones livelihood (supposedly anyway) and you certainly don't want to adversely affect that revenue stream it is somewhat understandable that there would be some reluctance to answer up........That said.......................

Aside from the TV shows hype, those of us that are truly looking at this as a business venture and not just a passing fad or hobby would like to know..........and we also view those shows as entertainment not reality. At least I do. I have bought a dozen or so units and have done fairly well. I'm to the positive side even after all expenses. Biggest slow down is finding the downline to sell the stuff into besides the standard CL/EBAY/ etc. For me, I take less money on any one particular item in order to keep product turning over and cash flowing... Thoughts anyone??

Gonna watch cuz I must be doing something wrong cuz I aint got rich yet after 7 or 8 units.......must not be standing on one foot with a lighning rod in my left hand during a thunderstorm in a mud puddle. ROTFLMAO...... everyone needs a bit of humor now and again. I'm going to watch just for fun but I'm keeping my head out of the clouds and grounded in reality. This fad caused by the show will pass and we can get down to business................... ;D

The only good thing about that is that the newbie who got junk at 250 may get discouraged and not come back! Also those that didn't bid and were just lookie loos may figure that this isn't worth doing and give it upo after following the TV hype.........We can only hope.

The Lounge / Re: old mattresses what do you do with them.

That sounds like a plan. For me though, it's not worth the time, effort and cost to strip down matresses and box springs. If it's good enough to sell on CL it will, otherwise if it's marginal, it goes on CL for 1 week as free. If it's not gone by then it goes to a free thrift store near me that takes anything and recycles what they can't sell. It is a non profit and I get a tax write off with no dumping fees. Just my take on it.

Ok so we all know about CL and Ebay and Donation ceters and Thirt and consignment stores. The question is what other selling sources can be developed?

For myself, I have been dabling in selling colletibles for years and have used all those sources. My next step as I get more involved is to start contacting any and all collectibles dealers in my area (Atlanta), going to their shops, meeting, glad handing just to build a face to face relationship so I have other outlets that are industry specific. I've already started with:

Gun Shops, Card Collectors, Art Galleries, Antique Galleries, Consignment stores, etc.

Now, I know all the "old timers / Pros" probably won't want to give out "trade secrets" (LOL) so anyone have any other thoughts?

Welcome aboard YG.  I went to a couple auctions today. Didn't pick up anything. First unit was closet sized 5x5? and full of real trash. Bad stuff. Bags full of literal trash and ratty old stained seats. Busted up computers.... Even the pro's walked away when he door went up. It was real bad. Auctioneer couldn't even get a starting $10 bid so he went to $1 the unit finally sold for $7. Everyone thought this was a dump fee paradise only...   Second unit was better, looked like someone had a chop shop and took old van seats out and stored them. A huge window AC unit looked 30 years old a few tools and not much else. The pros bid on it up to 150/200 then started walking away. Someone ended up with it for 305. All in all nothing good.

Good idea, call it a Resource Section...........

Don't they have to leave the owners lock on the unit until the auction begins and then cut the owners lock? If there is a lock in addition to the storage companies lock that should tell the story. Of course, they could always cut the owners lock, get what they want, replace the owners lock with a new cheap one and then add the storage units lock also. So I'd say look for a couple things.......

1. two locks (one the owners one the storage companies)
2. disturbed "struff" dust out of place or wiped off something
3. boxes that are mostly opened and appear to be rummaged thru (as most people close and tape their storage boxes when putting them in the units.

Anyone have any other ideas?
