eBay / Re: Handling Customer Complaints
« on: November 15, 2013, 12:45:50 PM »
Sorry man, that sucks.

Fortunately, I have not had to deal with that. I've only sold a couple of designer bags and no complaints.

I have had people try to scam me in other ways though.

My suggestion is to tell her you sold it to her in good faith that you believe it is an authentic bag, and if she does not want it she can return for refund. Also inform her that she must send the exact bag back in same condition it arrived in. Once you receive bag back check against photos you have to verify she did not pull a switcheroo. If she does switch it out, report it to eBay. Most likely though she is just an idiot trying to get a refund or partial refund and still keep the bag. When faced with only option is to return for full refund, they will usually return it or drop it.

Iknow this sucks, but sometimes it is all you can do.

Oh, and if you are a good honest seller, eBay isn't as bad on sellers as people like to complain. I have only had 2 buyer protection cases escalated to eBay on me, and I won them both.

Good luck.

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Using Facebook to sell. Works great!
« on: November 07, 2013, 01:35:45 PM »
I have been selling items on about 7 different local facebook groups in my area for about a year now. Works well for some items not so well for others. I have a new rule for myself, I have to get at least $20 or more for an item I attempt to sell on there, as it is not worth my time otherwise. My biggest issue where I live is most of the people in theses groups are low income or just want to get things for nothing, or they are very flaky, some items sell quickly, others take a while. If I can easily ship the item, I sell it on eBay, because even after shipping and fees I can usually get at least double what I can selling it locally. I do not have a CL local to where I live or I would do Craigslist intead, less drama. The groups in my area have too much drama, they have even set up 2 other groups to complain about people in the selling groups. And evrytime somone gets mad or banned they try to start their own selling group, it is a circus.

eBay / Re: Insurance Claims on Ebay
« on: November 05, 2013, 04:56:54 PM »
I have yet to have to file an insurance claim for something I have shipped, but from what I understand, the shipper has to file the claim, with the assistance of the recipient. The buyer has to be willing to work with you and the post office, whether it is to provide pictures or take the item into their local post office for inspection. As far as starting the process and filing the claim that is on the seller because they purchased the insurance. Sorry, you have to deal with this.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Keeping Items That Appreciate
« on: November 05, 2013, 10:53:00 AM »
Right now, I'm not in a position to hold onto anything for appreciation. If I have it, I've gotta sell it!

Me 2, and honestly I don't see any item appreciating enough to make it worth holding on to, except for maybe gold coins. example I have an item that maybe sells for $20, I have an idea that maybe it will be worth more down the road, so I hang onto it. 3 outcomes 1> demand falls and item becomes worthless, 2. value never really changes, 3. 10 years later item worth $100 maybe $200, woohoo 1 just made $10-$20 a year hanging onto it. does not make much business sense. I am in it for quick returns, clear out the old inventory and bring in the new. Time is money, and hanging onto something that long, hoping that it will appreciate equates to losing money in my book.

eBay / Re: 100,000 free listings on eBay
« on: October 28, 2013, 02:18:03 PM »

I am still waiting to see who could post 100,000 listings in the three day period they defined.

[/quote]

Only if they had them prebuilt in an offline listing tool ready to go, and individual selling limits still apply, so I would only be able to throw up 600 items for free under this offer.

eBay / Re: Suspicious bidding

I figured reporting it wouldn't do much, but I had a few minutes to kill. Personal story though, I have a product of a certain brand I got out of a unit, it is a specialized part and very expensive to get new from regular sources. I acquired 125 of them, and put them on eBay for $25 each about 1/4-1/6 of what they retail new for. I was not getting very many hits and no sales for about a month, I did a quick search and another seller was selling an off brand of the same product but using the name brand as keywords in the title for $13 each. I used the report item link to report it for keyword spamming, within a few hours his listing was gone and I have sold 65 of these items in the last 2 months since it was taken down. So reporting may not work in every case, but it sure as hell helped my sales by taking down some competition.

What I've learned, and it's not true in all cases.. But if you hold onto something for the best price, you may end up losing in the end. I've turned down offers on furniture that I believed was "worth more" and ended up taking less. You really have to know your market and when to take the deal and when to leave it.

I agree, I have been bitten a few times, my general rule is if I can't sell it for a good profit on eBay I flip it as quick as I can. I run into space issues to store to much stuff, if I had larger space I may try to hold onto some things a little longer.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Tell us about your FIRST auction buy
« on: October 23, 2013, 04:22:25 PM »
My first unit was a 10x15 I got for $550, should have been a bust, but I got lucky. It was a family that had been evicted from their home, had a son in jail and who knows what other problems. I didn't have a truck or trailer at the time, so I rented a uhaul truck. the facility was 90 miles from where I live so I had to do a one way rental, rental costs and fuel ended up costing me about $300. I also paid a friend to help me move it. Fortunately it had a 2 yeard old 50" LCD TV in it, a couple of smart phones, some other electronics and enough other stuff, I ended up selling it all for around $1500, so only a $500 dollar profit after all expenses. Would have been almost a grand now that I have my own trailer. Anyway, I am still no expert, but I have learned alot since then and still have alot to learn.

Online Storage Auctions / Re: How many people buy online?
« on: October 23, 2013, 10:01:21 AM »
When I first heard of Online bidding for storage auctions, I got excited. After looking into it a little more I wasn't as excited. At least 50% of the pics of lockers I see online are low quality or out of focus, Most of the better ones still don't come even close to the eyes on view you get at the physical auction. The prices for the units also seem to go alot higher than the in person ones, in my opinion.

Another point brought up before about weekend warriors who can't make it to a weekday auction was taht they can have a chance. Well you still run into the issue of if an online auction ends on Monday and you have even 72 hours to clean it out. If I can't get to the auction on Monday because of work committments, I probably wouldn't be able to get there Tuesday Wednesday or Thursday either to clean it out, so in my mind the online auctions give a greater advantage to the full time buyers. I admit I am not a full time buyer(yet). I don't think facilities should cater to any one type of buyer either. So I am not promoting changes to make it easier for weekend warriors, just pointing out why it is difficult for me to take advantage of the online auctions.

1 additional point, I happen to live in a place where any of the nearest online auctions are about 1 1/2 hours away. which compounds the above issues as well.

anyway thats my 2 cents

I live in a pretty remote town, the recyclers here know it, so they don't pay much. I get probably half or less what I could get about an hour away, just never have enough to justify the fuel cost, as for the items you mentioned, they won't pay a cent for them, if they will even take them, fortunately our local dump takes them for free and there is also 1 or 2 ewaste drop offs. i hope to move soon, maybe where I move to will have better rates.

133
The few that have accepted credit cards, I have not used because, I always had enough cash. I don't like when they do because it causes the locker prices to go higher generally. Last one I went to had 13 units, 1 guy bought 8 of them because of the credit cards, I think he ended up paying over $7000 for all of them. Made me lose out on one I really wanted because it seemed like he was doing more of a power grab, then looking for profits. He is a pretty big fish in the area though, so I guess he can afford a bit of a loss to try to intimidate others.

But I do like the idea of getting the points, have to remeber that for future.

eBay / Re: Suspicious bidding
« on: October 22, 2013, 10:22:00 AM »
sounds maybe like shill bidding but its kind of a stupid strategy as he's paying final value fees on all these listings which end with bids

If he has his "other" bidders request to cancel transaction after auction is over, and he agrees, then final value fees are returned. I know because I have had 2 or 3 people win and then change their mind. Once the tranaction is cancelled final value fees are returned. Sometimes I relist and it sells for more, sometimes less, its the price you pay to play. Also, there are ways to report things like this to eBay if you felt so inclined, because what he is doing is definately againt eBays policies. He is most likely doing it as a way to have a reserve price without paying the reserve price fee. If you have a minimum you want just set the minimum opening bid to that amount or do a buy it now, or best offer and price it a little higher than you want to get.

edit: I just went and took a closer look at his listings, I was bored, and he is definitely shill bidding in my opinion. So, just for fun I reported 5 of his completed listings for artificially infalting price usin other accounts. If a few more people do it is well, it could really ruin his day. ;-)

I like the end of the article where the people are saying how much they are making. What a waste of time.
