Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: LOOKY LOOS everywhere today

Its not arrogance if you can back it up. ;D

Since your new to the storage game you have no track record and can't back it up now, only time will tell if you can, so you should probably get a few profitable units under your belt before you get so cocky.

I can see both sides of the debate here.  I'm a newbie and I'm frustrated that the crowds are so big. :D  However, I'm here to stay and the old heads need to get used to it.  I know my financial limits and I wont be "run-up" by anyone, ever!  I treat this like the business that it is.

If you are world class and have a tough auction game then newbies dont intimidate you, they just make you stronger.  I hate the bellyaching.  The good-old-boys-club has been exposed.  Either up your game or quit your crying.

You really can't be frustrated, you have no idea what the auctions were like before so crowds is all you know. Even just 8 months ago auctions would be me and 3-4 other guys literally taking turns buying units at $25-$35 a pop.

Also, best of luck to you but you don't know your here to stay until you've actualy bought some units and made some money.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Paying income tax in sales
« on: February 01, 2011, 11:20:22 PM »
I was thinking about this today as I was going over the boxes...

1 - Do any of you report income you are making doing this as a business? If you sell on E-Bay is there any kind of report that is submitted to "big brother"?

2 - By having a resale certificate, I understand you don't have to pay taxes, but then do you charge ppl tax?  I understand selling it to a resale shop you wouldn't, and if you consign, the consignment shop pays the tax, but since taxes have already been paid on the stuff the first time around, I think it is double dipping fo Uncle Sam.

I am really wanting to do this full time, so need to understand the "rules of the game"

KP

Techinically and legally you have to report any income. Paypal/Ebay only report your income if you do over 20k in sales and over 200 sales. That's not one or the other has to be both 20k and 200 sales.

I agree it's not right for "the man" to double dip but they do it to you in every other aspect of your life. You pay income tax to state and federal, then you pay more taxes for every product you buy, you pay all types of fees and permits for your house, car, license, etc. When you sell your stuff if you make a profit you get taxed again. If you want to give someoen a gift there's a tax on taht money that has arleady been taxed a dozen times and then when you die "the man" takes 50% of what should be passed onto your kids.

Still think they won't double dip on you with this? lol

The Treasure Chest / Re: Latest Cool Stuff I've Found in Units!
« on: February 01, 2011, 11:17:10 PM »
A few more pictures..........

That little 2 person sauna is cool. I'd probably keep it for myself. Nothing I'd ever buy for myself but if I got one in a unit that would be a cool thing to put out  in the garage for after workouts.

eBay / Anyone have success selling clothes on ebay?
« on: February 01, 2011, 11:14:28 PM »
Last auction I went to got a ton of nice clothes, shoes, etc in great condition. Problem is I can't seem to sell any of it on ebay.

It's all nicer womens stuff puma shoes with stickers still on the bottom, great condition womens clothes like forever 21, express, kenneth cole, etc. I take lots of pics from different angles and sides. Post measurements of each piece of clothing etc. Only time it sells is if I drop price to like 0.99 cents with like $4 shipping and even then I'll get one bid price wont go up at all.

Such a waste to ask for higher prices because I may have to relist it 4 times at which point any profit I make is wiped out by fees if it sells at all, if not I paid insertion fees for nothign. I try to take advantage of the free listing weeks to try diff price points but still not much luck.

I don't mind selling the clothes for cheap b/c I already made 4x my money back on the unit just want to get rid of stuff.

Just seems like the only way anythign sells on ebay as at dirt cheap prices.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: 2nd auction, first win and CASH!!!!
« on: February 01, 2011, 08:13:27 PM »
Congrats on the first unit. Sounds like a decent one. The on thing to remember is winnign the unit isn't the hard part its getting rid of the merchandise. I have so much dishes, cookware, etc your going to find its harder to get rid of than you think, especially at decent prices. You got in at a low enough price though that you'll make an easy profit.

Providing plates, dishes, cookware etc is not nice stuff like calphalon I find the best place to get rid of it is flea markets. At least by me resale shops are really picky about what they will take.

My first acution was on the 18th and was what I expected - almost 100 people to look at 14 lockers, the first a 5x5 going for $250; after 6 units I left as it was too rich for my blood... :-[

Today was a different story  :D only 10 people for 6 units  - first unit had a nice bed frame and a boflex like machine that was brand new...didn't sell. I would have bid the $20 they were asking but had no way to transport it...I may check with the facility tomorrow to see if I can make an offer... the next 3 were all the same owner that was a contractor (full of doors, windows and construction stuff) same person got all 3 for $275 if I'm not mistaken.  #4 was the crem-dela-crem...a 5x5 stacked high and as full as it could be.  Mostly boxes, duffle bags and a few plastic shopping bags you could not really see what was in them.  Started off at $50, no takers....$30, no takers, so I offered $15, then someone bid $20, I bid $25 and got it!!!!!!!!!!!! :o   The last locker was a 5 x 10 saw a twin bed and a few other things and I walked away.  It went for $15. I figured I would not be greedy and be happy with the locker I got!!!

I spent about 2 hours in 20ish degree temps looking through the boxes trying to see what treasures I now own... in the few things that jumped out at me, I am looking at around $150 for 4-6 items.  That does not count the big storage tub full of china/ceramic/glass bells, or the bit storage tub full of salt and pepper shakers, or the big storage tub full of tableware, or the big storage tub full of new Christmas balls and orniments....they were all behind the cardboard boxes!!!!!!! These tubs are like 36x24x18 if I have to guess.  Even if I only get $1.00 per bell and per S/P set, I'm looking at a good $200 plus the $150, then there are all of the clothes (taking to a resale shop) I realisticly think this may be close to $500 after all is said and done.... I'll keep everyone posted once I get a full inventory!!!  I did rent the locker for the month, so my total hard cost/investment at this point is right at $85 so that is almost 5x return!!!  ;D  ...Next auction is 2/10...

Oh...I almost forgot, the $185 in cash.....

well, no, $1.85 and counting!!! ;)

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Sunday Auction that sucked
« on: January 30, 2011, 04:09:05 PM »
Todays auction was bad in several ways.

1. Bad units.
2. Few units, as people had paid up on many.
3. Crowded.

1. Public storage must have their own type of clients, i have never seen so many ****ty units from one company. It is almost like they have a magnet to crap.

2. it looked good last niht with many units unpaid, sadly almost all of them was paid up this morning. This made the compatition harder on the remaining units. And with alot NEWBIES with no brain's and to much money in their pocket, this day turned out to be a from hell.
I am not gonna compete with newbies that bids 825 dollars on a 250-300 dollar unit. And some units that normally would go for 50-100 went today for 300-400 dollars.  I HOPE IT TASTE GOOD WHEN YOU SEE HOW YOU THREW YOUR MONEY AWAY!

3. When people show up and have no plans on bidding, and at the same time brings their whole family, (kids, infants in strollers, etc) and on top of that do it in a inside climate controlled storage facillity with limited space, that just makes me wonder.  Another thing is when the same "no bidder" "family picnic" people stands infront of the unit and blocking the veiw for others who are there to bid and buy, then it has come to a point where something has to be done.

A storage facillity here in Memphis has taken this problem to heart, and they Charge a $25.00 fee per person. This fee will be paid back by the end of the auction, and this prevents alot of people to enter. I just wish everyone could start to do that.

So everyone pays $25 and if you win you get the $25 put towards your unit price? Do people who don't buy get the $25 back?

In my area Uhaul has started charing a buck to see each unit. Doesn't sound like much but when you got 125 people paying say $3 to see 3 units it adds up.

Personally I'd rather just see places add a buyers premium onto the unit price however I guess that doesn't do anything about the lookers just taking up space.

$25 seems a little excessive to me though reguarldess of what's done with it.

Craigslist / Do you sell small dollar items on craigslist?
« on: January 30, 2011, 01:27:49 PM »
I always see people on craigslist selling small dollar items like things for $5 or $10.

Personally to be it's not even worth the time or effort. You have so many no shows, people show up late and leave you watiing for 45 min just to meet up with them. Usually you dont want them at your house so meet somewhere in public.

To me it's just not worth makign $5 or $10 off an item to have to find a time that works for both of you, drive somewhere to meet up, wait for them since they are always late, etc.

If the item will sell on ebay I'd rather make a quarter off it and get some points on my ebay score than deal with craigslist to make an extra $5 or so.

Other Forms of Selling / Anyone seen Pawn Queens?
« on: January 30, 2011, 01:25:28 PM »
The show is pretty corny like most reality shows but it's an actual Pawn Shop outside of Chicago. The cool thing is anlike a traditional pawn shop that only takes gold, electronics, etc this one caters to women.

They take cookware, home decor items, strollers, etc.

The cool thing is they will take pretty much anything. The guy gave me $5 for a little lunch size cooler I brought in one day, this is soemthing that probably woudln't have sold on craigslist even.

After months or years in a given area the courtesies between experienced buyers start to sort themselves out, but there are always variables and people change too.

Consider this story. Really happened.

Buyer A gives buyer B a ride to an auction because buyer B's car was out of commission. Ride to an auction 30 miles away.

Buyer A bids on a lkr. Buyer B bids against him and wins the auction. Buyer B says to buyer A..."You should have brought more money."

Does buyer A say to B " you should have rented a car" and leave him at the auction...lol

What's it Worth?? / Re: 3D Picture/Sculpture of The Last Supper
« on: January 30, 2011, 01:14:24 PM »
Looked at your pics and it looks to me like it is a resin type material like many 3D figurines I get of dragons, knights, Buddas, etc but should be a seller anyway. In California there is a huge hispanic market for anything religious including crosses made out of cholla cactus skeletons...if those go for southwestern decor or a farm worker bunker, your item will have no problem selling.

Funny you said that,my buddy was joking with me I should go to two towns near us that have big Italian and Hispanic populations he said it would sell for a pretty good amount

Just wondering what your guys thought on if there's any unspoken rules or etiquete amonst us at auctions?

Prior to the crowds me and a few other regulars I'm friendly with would basically have an unspoken rotation adn take turns buying units. Units would go for $20-$35. If a prime unit came up with a closed business in in, cars, etc it was every man for himself but for run of the mill units we kinda took turns.

Another thing is if there's not a whole lot of units on a particular day once you win one or two you should step aside. Aside from being kind of an unspoken thing I think it's self preservation as well.

Like they say hogs get slaughtered, you start hogging units and everyone is gonna run up prices on  you.
