What's it Worth?? / Antique Bamboo CHair from the Phillipines???
« on: January 30, 2011, 12:55:52 PM »
Hi, found this in an auction. It's a bamboo chair, I'm assuming it's from the Phillipines since the people who owned the unit were from the Phillipines and moved there. Anyone know the value of this chair? Also curious to know any history. Below are a few pics adn below that is what I was told when I asked about it on yahoo answers...

I live in Cebu and I have a bench very near the style you show but it is no where near as curvy as yours. Here in Cebu if they curve the bambo it is usually done by soaking and curving (man made) the ones you show appear to be (natural) which means it would be more expensive and most of it would be from underneath the ground not what is growing above ground which again would make it more expensive.

Yours is much more fancy than what I have seen here where I am. I don't know what other areas do...also remember if it is made for export it will be much more fancy and expensive than what is made and sold here locally.

Another thing I noted is the color...if you look at the bamboo products from other countries they are usually on the lighter color side (even the exported items).

If I was forced into a guess I would guess that what you show was made in the Philippines, whether some one had it specially made to send home (State Side or other country) or it is something exported for sale, I don't know.

What's it Worth?? / 3D Picture/Sculpture of The Last Supper
« on: January 30, 2011, 12:51:24 PM »
First off this is a great idea for a category in this forum. So often you come across stuff but don't really even know enough to start researching onthe  the interenet for it.

I have two thigns I really want to know the value of as well as the history, always kinda curious to know the background on certain items I find and don't have a rolodex of my own "experts" like pawn stars, storage wars, etc. lol.

I found this 3 dimensional porcelain picture/sculpture of the last supper. There's really no markings or anythign on it. I've seen some of these online for a couple hundred but seen some by this capadona or some name alogn those lines going for upwards of $6500.

Anyone know about this particular one?

Does html show up as pics on this forum?

Sorry pics are too big and having trouble resizing so putting photobucket links below...

Nice unit, cool video!

Thanks, best two items in there were probably the 50" Phillips Flat Screen with wall mount got $500 for that off craigslist and then sold the bose in wall invisible speakers for $250 on ebay.

I found a bag of about a dozen doonie and bourke purses. I thought I would make a killing off those, years ago I bought one for my gf at Macy's and spent $200 on one on sale. I was getting like $20 for those on ebay. Apparently that brnad isn't that sought after anymore was bummed out about that, thought I had a fortune with those purses.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Aukward Experience
« on: January 30, 2011, 12:37:01 PM »
I actually was at an auction where the person who previously owned the unit actually went into the unit took a jewelry box and a folder full of stuff and ran off.

Any pictures, documents, etc I always try to give back to the origional owner and wouldn't even think of charging for this kind of stuff.. Any kids stuff I will always give back for free. For the most part clothes I'll even give back. Bigger ticket items I'm keeping though.

In my local pickup eBay listings I say in the payment section.

Payment is made upon pickup in a manner used thousands of years before PayPal was ever invented.
I also might say something like "payment is made in U.S. currency upon local pickup"

As I said in my original post, taking photos would require some finesse. Customer relations is important of course.

I try to do the same thing as you but no matter how you phrase it if someone reports your listing it gets taken down

Is it really though?  I understand defending your livelihood, but I also sense some immaturity in some of these posts.  I hear a lot of people on here commenting about people showing up and not even bidding.  Did all of you bid and buy at your very first auction?  Did you know all of the unwritten rules of the auction world at your first handful of auctions?  I doubt it.  If you did, more power to you.  The point is, the game has clearly changed.  The once private storage auction world has now been exposed, and the new competition is likely here to stay.  I'd guess that just as many "regulars" will end up being pushed out of the business as newcomers.

I don't think the most of the new crowds are here to stay. As silly as it sounds I think some people really do believe it's really like the show and every unit contains some 50k rare item or cash or gold. That's the only way I can imagine people would bid some of the prices they do on some of these units we are seeing go upwards of a grand that used to be like $35.

I imagine people will see you really gotta buy a lot of units to find quality ones. I think people will discover they spend money and make nothing in return. I also think some people think it's all about buying the unit. What really makes you money is how many avenues you have to get rid of stuff. Every item you give away or throw away is money comming out your pocket. The people who can get rid of everything from old paper to scrap metal to clothes for a profit are the ones that will make it.

Oddly enough I actually did wind up buying a unit at my first auction and was surprisingly the best unit I have bought in the past year and a half or so.

I don't think this is uniqe to the storage game. Lots of hobbies and livelihoods are not welcoming of newcommers. Do a google search of how do I become a tattoo artist, tattoo artists are brutal on people looking to learn. Same thing with glass blowing. I ride motorcycles and found that when I first started out people as a whole weren't very welcomming of a new rider. I don't agree iwth it but its in all different aspects of life.

I do agree though its actually probably not wise to go out gungho and buying stuff your first time without scoping out how auctions run, what things go for, etc. In the same token its easy to see why those who have been doing this for 10 or 15 years and this is their sole livelihood are frustrated that some people see the show and just want to come out and look and have no intention of buying or getting into it and are essentially just taking up space and time.

I doubt that idea will work for long and I haven't seen it in central California.

The crowds...that's another story...3 months, 6 months ?

I really don't even go to uhaul auctions anymore because of this. More on principal than anything since its only a buck, though it is a buck per unit not a buck per facility.

This one particular auction there were about 125 people and 4 units to auction. Oa n this day uhaul made $500 just to let us look at a bunch of junk for 15 minutes.

I guess it is kinda smart on their part, not sure about all states but in Illinois storage facility only gets what they are owed not any additional money the unit sells for that goes back to the units owner after all fees are paid. I guess this is one way for the facility to make some extra money. I think $500 is a little much but I do agree they deserve something for the 100 of us that come trampling though their facility dragging snow in that they have to mop up later, using their bathrooms, etc.

I think both shows are incredibly fake and stupid but still can't stop watching them...lol.

From the start I always like Storage Wars much more than Auction Hunters.

I had another post on this forum from yesterday about something I discovered though. I was watching animal planet and Ton was a snake rangler as well. I highly doubt he's a part time snake rangler part time auction hunter so its pretty clear to me that this show is completely fake and these two guys are actors.

Storage Wars has a story line to each episode and is staged to a point but I'm pretty sure at least those are really peoplel who really do this.

Frankly I haven't had that experience and hope I never do, but you could do this.

Photograph the exchange of cash taking place for the item at pickup time. You could even photograph the license plate of the person picking it up. Naturally some tact would be necessary in this taking place. You don't want to alienate this person in the process.

In ebays policies they basically state in a roundabout way you have no protection. They even say a signed contract by the buyer acknowledging they recieved the item won't be considered proof.

As for a picture not only will the buyer probably not let you photograph them but really what does that prove? Ebays customer service isn't exactly teh best, its not like anyone will ever look at your pic. Plus even if they do they don't know what the buyer looks like, you could just as easily stage that whole thing with a buddy of yours and take a pic of you giving a buddy the table.

One idea would be the buyer has a password upon you delivering the item they tell you hte 4 digit passcode, you text that to ebay and get a confirmation text immediately telling you its correct and that proves you delivered the item. Something like this would be really easy and cheap for them to set up but they wont do it.

What really annoys me though is they force you to accept paypal. If you were allowed to say b/c this is local pickup cash only that would be fine but ebay will take down your ad. Your not allowed to solicit cash or only accept cash. Ebay forces you to take a payment method that leaves you open to getting ripped off everytime.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: New in Chicago area
« on: January 30, 2011, 10:34:25 AM »
With the somewhat limited number of people at these forums right now, the best bet on your dump site question for Chicago is to do a google search or talk to the people at your waste management offices in your area.

In my area the county dumps are accessible to the general public and a pickup truck load (as high as you can stack) goes for about $15 to $18 dollars. Paying by the ton is more expensive, but if you take a big box truck in and pay that way you're only making one trip which saves on gas.

Not sure how long this has been in effect but last time I went to the dump they charged me all types of extra fees for hazard fees and all this other nonsense even though it was normal stuff I was dumpiong. Not sure if this is just an IL thing or a federal thing.

I find the cheapest and easiest option is those waste management bags you can buy at home depot. About $130 you pick up the bag unfold it load it up in your driveway and call them to have them take it away.

The Treasure Chest / A dissapointing treasure
« on: January 29, 2011, 07:37:51 PM »
About six months ago I was at an auction where about a dozen units were being auctioned. After the first few units were auctioned we were standing around and heard a women screaming. We went over and she had a box with 44K in it. Upon closer inspection she realized all the bills had teh same serial number, counterfits though pretty realistic looking ones. What a dissapointment for her.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Over 200 at local auctions these days
« on: January 29, 2011, 07:32:02 PM »
The auctions in the detroit area have gone from 10-15 regulars to 100+.   The bidding is getting stupid too.  Saw a unit with just 4 boxes (2 were empty)  go for over $60.

The new bidders are blowing all their money on crap units and they will soon learn the hard truth.

One couple bought a unit for $350.   It was a nicer unit with some nice stuff but they didn't have anywhere to put it.   they didn't realize they had to move out with 24 hrs.   They ended up signing a new rental agreement and put the whole unit on craigslist for $800, then $500, then $300...

The newcomers will soon get frustrated there is not a quick fortune to be made ad the crowds will thin out.   May take a few months, but soon enough.

I agree with ya, I recently saw a unit at a PODS auction go for over $900. There were 4 old mattresses and nothing else. This guy would have to sell each used mattress for $225 just to break even.

Mid West / Re: North of Chicago
« on: January 29, 2011, 07:17:51 PM »
Just starting out. Been to two auctions so far. First was a sealed bid auction and 6 people showed up. Didn't win any but did place bids. Second was just outside of Rockford, IL at 10AM on a Saturday and the wid-chill was about -5. 9 units were up for auction and 79!!!!!!!! people showed up. Prices were through the roof. No more auctions to go to until the 28th but looking foward to it. Would like to see smaller crowds but it is what it is.

What did you think about the silent bid format? Do you prefer one over the other? I in Chicago, don't come across many sealed bid auctions but I actually prefer them to the regular auction format.
