They told everyone they had 3-4 days. Considering the heat that was nice.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Trashy unit =(

The unit I got Tue had enough spiders to make a horror movie, big ones everywhere that gave me the willies. I'll take trash over spiders any day. Bombed the unit and sprayed it to and still got bit by something. I don't think it was a brown recluse but poopy sheets don't make my skin crawl. Be carefull out there!

General Storage Auction Talk / got my biggest unit
« on: July 23, 2011, 11:48:12 AM »
Hey everyone, went to an auction on Tuesday with 11 units available and got the second to last one, a packed 10 by 10 for 250.00. There were only 15 at the auction but almost every one of them were regulars that I see all the time. This did not give me alot of hope, but they spent 350-725 on 9 of the 11 units, and maybe ran out of steam. Took me three days to clean out in 98 degree heat as well as the regular job, so I need a nap. So far I've found some Waterford crystal, huge Northpole tent, Singer sewing machine, 2 nice tv's (not flatscreen), dining table n chairs, teak outdoor bench, antique school desk, and a garage full of other stuff. One item is an old looking wood box that clasps on both ends and has rows of holes bored inside, when pulled apart both halves are identicle. Will post some pictures in "what is it" so someone can help me figure out what it might be.

This is the first time reading this thread, and thank you to jrossjr79 for your posts. My thought process is very similar to yours. I couldn't do this business without being highly organized. I have a very large garage that I work out of and I separate items by type and how they will be sold. So far I have been able to sell larger items quickly to people i know through work, wife's work, church etc. Need to get another unit, garage looks kinda empty even with 2 large shelving units full of yard sale stuff. Right now I keep anything I can sell, even 25 cent items. I can see how some of you don't fool with that stuff due to the volume you handle. I also salvage good hardwood panels and boards to use later on other broken furniture. Dumping trash costs me nothing in the county I live in so I try to squeeze out every dime I can. Good luck to everyone this week, I've got several auctions this week to get one.

I'm collecting mirrors to build frames for this winter( to hot in garage now). It will satisfy my woodworking itch. One was a small oval, one was a 3ft square (very thick), and the last was cut into a cathedral window shape with a very heavy MDF material for the frame. I'm going to clean and paint that one as is. Also found some new Corning Ware baking dishes in this unit that I'm keeping, so all in all it turned out to be a pretty cool little unit.

Got a small unit that was a little trashy for 25.00 yesterday. Already sold an old Quasar stereo and some dishes that put me into profit. Think I'll end up with about 50.00 in sales and i got 3 nice mirrors for my collection. Nothing to exciting, but didn't take a lot of time and effort to clean out.

General Storage Auction Talk / Silent Strategy
« on: July 12, 2011, 02:47:49 PM »
Went to a silent auction after work today and had to submit one bid for all 3 units, winner take all. Two of the three had nothing but broken furniture, third all boxes with little showing. I didn't really want it, but threw in a low bid anyway and didn't win. Any different strategy at these types of auctions?

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Got my first two units

Just a quick update on my units. We ended up keeping about $100.00 worth of items including 8 nice totes with lids and a 6ft Lifetime folding table, and a bunch of fleece loungewear for my daughters.  Have total sales of $325.00 so far, with about $125.00 left to go. The most valuable thing is my wife is totally on board and did research and made sales for me.

This is an great thread for a new guy like me. All of your thoughts give great insight into how one might approach their business. This seems to be driven by 2 things, time and personality. As for me, I have the time because this is a part time endeavor for me. However, my personality is geared to go through everything. My units coughed up about 15.00 in coins from every nook and cranny. I can see the other side as well, but I'm a long way from that level where every quarter doesn't matter. Continued good luck to everyone!

Went to an auction yesterday with 8 units, had 25 registered bidders and about 35 people total. Bigger crowd than I expected considering 92 degrees and blacktop. Didn't win one, only liked 1 unit and it went higher than I wanted to go. Most went for 125.00 to 300.00, and a unit that looked staged went for 425.00. This is in Nashville TN area.

I could not agree more with the value of experience. Like Movieman suggested, use this forum to answer questions and discover things to watch out for. I use this forum as a guide because I respect those who have done what I want to do. Why pay for something that costs nothing here? I watched his videos online, but I firmly believe going to auctions, bidding, winning a unit, cleaning out, digging thru everthing, finding good suff in the bottom of the last box can only be experienced. I was able to experience it for the first time last week and no book could do it justice.

What's it Worth?? / Subwoofer help
« on: July 05, 2011, 11:05:59 AM »
I have a pair of Cerwin-Vega HT-10D subwoofers from one of my lockers, haven't tested them yet, but do they have much value? They are in fair to good shape, cones look good and boxes have slight, but repairable damage.Thanks.
