I found a nice poster of a local community college's musical production.  It was frame and signed by the cast and crew.  I brought it to the current professor and he put it up.

Craigslist / Re: What is it with people selling on CL?

Trailers are tough.  I think they must be made of gold as well.  Some of the trailers on sell on Clist in Dallas are as much as box trucks.

General Storage Auction Talk / Computer recycling for money
« on: September 19, 2013, 08:53:10 PM »
I recently found a CList ad selling computer monitors.  I bought the whole lot of 6 plus a working laptop for $60.

Anyway to make long story short.  He was a computer recycler.  He would go to offices when they upgraded and loaded all the old stuff and took it away to recycle.  He usually tests them all out tries to sell some of the better stuff on CList or Ebay then takes everything to scrap.

There is a whole industry for this.  He was not very articulate but a really nice guy.  Does anyone have any experience recycling computer stuff.  What I saw online was to take the computer apart, separate the components, and take to a couple of different scrap yards.

Ram and motherboards seem to bring a lot of cash.

Just curious if anyone else does a lot of this.

The Treasure Chest / Re: Your personal treasure
« on: September 19, 2013, 08:49:41 AM »
There were autograph baseballs by Reggie Jackson, CC, Don Mattingly, David Ortiz. Autograph bats from Albert Pujols and David Justice. Bunch of autograph Cards, (5) autograph Game used gloves from Jeter, Cano, Pujols, Mike Trout, Miguel Cabrera. There was also a piece of the foul pole from old Yankee stadium. Every piece of item came with a certificate of authenticity with a matching MLB and PSA/DNA hologram. I was like a 35yr old kid in the candy store.
Needless to say, I still have all the baseball memorabilia and I sold all the DJ equipment for $1500. It was a quick sale, I actually sold all the equipment right from the storage facility. $1100 pure profit with NO physical labor.

That is awesome.  I do not go looking for treasures at auctions but it is nice to have some out there to maybe pick up.  I love these type of stories.  Also glad to have you YuupFL I am new to the forum as well and the info is good and every once in a while there is some fun drama.

Even our fearless leader left his 5 (count 'em FIVE) listings for his motorhome on cList after he announced he had sold it here on the forum. OF COURSE...maybe he hadn't collected the money yet and was waiting to take them off (all 5 of them) until he had been paid.

I think you maybe a cyber stalker :)

I have not found any personal treasures but my kids have a ton of fun processing because they know they can keep items within reason. There favorite so far have been a couple of nerf guns and some boxing gloves.

One thing buying storage auctions and being around the community is that I doubt I will be many things new anymore.  There are so many great things at thrift stores and Craigslist.  You not only save tons of money and help someone out.  That has been a treasure for me and my family to learn.  :)

Craigslist / Re: Craigslist Barter Section
« on: September 18, 2013, 10:45:05 AM »
Do you think it is bad if I posted on both the cash section and the barter section?

I am thinking about doing that with my 2001 Jeep Cherokee.  List it for $2200 cash and barter but with different ads.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Units that tell a story
« on: September 18, 2013, 07:53:03 AM »
I have found two bongs and one crack pipe, so those stories just told themselves.

Sometimes I feel bad when I come across a lot of personal items.  I try to get them back but it takes a couple of days to process everything or sometimes I concentrate on the big stuff and it is weeks.  Pictures do tell a thousand words and some of those stories are sad.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Have you ever lost a storage unit?
« on: September 18, 2013, 07:50:01 AM »
When I read the title I thought you meant physically lost.  I have driven around a storage facilities looking for my locker because I forgot to write down the unit number.

He got out of his car yelling about how long it took him to get there.  Then that item wasnt as described (which it was).  Then he wanted to pay $20 for it instead of the $50 and I wouldnt go below $40.

It is amazing how crazy people get.  Logic just doesn't seem to enter the equation.  He knew how far it was when you gave him directions or address.

Craigslist / Where do you meet?
« on: September 17, 2013, 03:34:04 PM »
I just read a post by Alias that said they met people in malls or police stations.  I understand safety concerns and usually have them meet at my storage with a friend or my wife.

Anyone ever had problems with creeps or anything like that?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Screwed by bad advertisement and myself
« on: September 17, 2013, 03:16:40 PM »
Jeeps in general are crap! Did you see big profit in this jeep? or were you just looking to buy and caught up in the excitement to have a story to tell people that you bought a jeep at auction?

Well if you read the first post you would I thought it was a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I bought it for $1950 and that was a good deal.  I did get excited at the bidding but I had a cutoff point of $2200.  I am confident that I could have sold a 2007 one for at least triple that amount.

Anyway it is a good lesson and I will be a lot more cautious going forward especially for vehicles.

Update on the situation

They called me today and offered a check for almost half the amount I paid.  I thought that was fair and though I still would not have paid that much for a 2001, some of the blame is on me for not doing my due diligence.

They company was Secucare Self Storage and kudos to them.  I always believed it was an honest mistake but it is not hard to look up a VIN.  More incompetence then fraud.  I bet they look at VINs more carefully in the future.

Anyway thanks for the great input as usual guys.
