General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Got my first two units
« on: July 06, 2011, 11:06:28 PM »
congrats millertime!  you did really well!  i agree with calling around as most are too busy to or unmotivated to do the daily dialing- all it takes is a bit of discipline :)  i like the corporate facilities that dont use an auctioneer as they arent interested in driving the price up because they dont get a cut...

good call on the uhaul guys! much needed info for me---

thanks monkey and rogue---
update:

sold my vsmile for 25 bucks which was double the average win price of 12 dollars.  was happy about that until i made a mistake and shipped it ups ground and it cost me 29 dolllars so i lost 4.00.

i dont want to charge for shipping as i would think it would generate interest in my items.  and wanted to use ups cause i hear our usps system loses packages all the time and i dont want to have a ****ty feedback rating.  what do u guys do regarding shipping???

The "Other" Job / I work at a Honda dealership in central Fl
« on: July 06, 2011, 09:47:26 PM »
Hello all- I make pretty good money working 60+ hrs a week selling Hondas... this month is tough because hyundai is coming on strong offering tantalizing reason for going with their cars in these tough times... plus since the tsunami in japan back in march no new cars or parts are being made for Honda so sales and inventory have been way down.

I have dreams of leaving the biz and doing auctions full time and owning a thrift store so i can be independently wealthy, lol hehe seriously would like to not be micro managed everyday by my bosses and kicked in the teeth by customers.  I get enough abuse at home by my wife-- lol. so i would love nothing more than to make less money, help the community with inexpensive preowned items for sale, and be able to take time off whenever i want :)  (SO FAR NOT DOING TO WELL AT SELLING ON CRAIGSLIST OR EBAY...)
WISH I HAD THE TIME TO DEVOTE TO THE TWO LOCKERS OF GOODIES IN MY GARAGE--- WILL BE HAVING A YARD SALE SOON AND AM FORCASTING A TOTAL PROFIT OF 400+ DOLLARS FOR SPENDING $110.  THATS COOL WITH ME!

ENJOY YOUR NEXT DIG!

IMO this is better than Glendon's book because we can all chat in almost real-time.  We can read all the info in his book, apply it and be successful (I almost bought the book) or you can make friends here and become involved in this kick ass forum community and we can all get better together.

Good point millertime. my same thoughts and exactly how i started this cool journey...Congrats on bustin your cherry!  Took me back to a month ago when i got my first and was sweating my ass off in a 5x5!   I am hoping to win a third one tomorrow- 5 facilities and 40 units up for grabs.

Good luck to all and enjoy the dig!!!!

Yeah im thinking the storage renters everywhere are catching on and getting their stuff out cause they don't want us owning it. Wonder if we will start seeing more empty units in the future because of exposure on television.

Lol monkey biz... exactly what my lady says... its just me and a buddy who has a truck. He hardly shows up. So basically just me. I wont buy a locker until I  get rid of my goodies first.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: How do YOU find auctions?
« on: June 27, 2011, 11:27:28 PM »

:-\ I went to a facility today in Clearwater fl and 9am... Bam! 50 people. 2nd facility...Bam!  70 people. Unbelievable! Oh well I have enough from my first two to make about 300.00-400.00. Still having trouble selling my ebay and craigslist items.

So I went to an auctioneer's caravan of facilities this morning until noon--- 21 units!
1st facility(uncle bob's SS) had about 50 people (no kidding) and crap went for 275+++ ugh.  supposed to have 6 units- 3 paid up.

2nd facility(uncle bob's SS) supposed to have 9 units, 4 doors were cut open and every one went for 300+!!!! WTF... i decided to hold onto my 400 and save it for a much smaller crowd--- figured the reason for the crowds is they search storage auctions online and get our local autioneers website which lists their upcoming caravans- sign up and get emails of upcoming auctions=tons of people=overpriced lockers.  believe me- today's lockers were not that impressive.

HERES THE TIP- IF YOU WANT INEXPENSIVE UNITS, GO OLD SCHOOL SEARCHING FOR STORAGE FACILITIES THAT DON'T USE AUCTIONEERS (PUBLIC SELF STORAGE, the big orange P, uses their district managers to caravan once a month and handle the bidding wars=boring bidding not trying to skyrocket the price for a cut of the profits=more money you and i save!)

A note about our local auctioneers that irritate me- they make us form a line and after only 10 or so people see the locker she starts the bidding at 100.00!   its usually up to 225 by the time everyone sees it...  anyone else have any thoughts or ideas--???
