The Treasure Chest / Re: What's the Value? Challenge

Jross,

I've heard of people doing that with those old entertainment centers. Pretty smart if you ask me; with all the flat screen tv's no one will touch an entertainment center at auctions.

Was it difficult to do? Time consuming?

I just did a lamp. These industrial repurposing things people are coming up with blow my mind. http://www.restorationhardware.com/  is a good example of people repurposing. THey have some sweet items I would love to own, but dang, look at the price tags!

Nice, let me know.

Why bother going to an auction when the deck is stacked? TV time I guess...Those reality shows are warping reality.

Lol, no, I've been doing this long enough to know the value myself.  If I can't, or do not know what it is, I have a nice network of people that do.

I thought it would be fun to see how people valued things around the US.  Some items are more valuable in other places. I know whenever i watch Storage Wars, or American Pickers, I am always doing a quick estimate of how I would value what they buy.

Anyone ever do that? Look at a locker on Storage Wars and say, "I bet that goes for xxxx amount?" Or "I wouldn't pay over xxx for that locker"

That's all I was hoping to accomplish. I thought the bumper stickers might provide an added incentive.

Got a couple responses. I'm kind of stunned no one is really taking up the challenge.  I found an interesting item in a house yesterday. First time I ever bought a camel saddle!  Google them, I might make a little table out of the one I found.

Anyone ever repurpose, or rethink how to use items?

I began buying old ship items when I found a couple during a pick and took a liking to them. Now I keep my eye out for anything that looks old, worn, copper or brass, and interesting.

If you run across anything like this, shoot me a message and we'll see if I can afford it!

Also, I've been looking for an old wooden airplane propeller for a long time.  I have found a couple, but they both were damaged.  I would be interested in one of these to.

These would all be for my personal collection and not for resale.

money hit it pretty much on the head.  You may find some information, but whether it will be useful or not is up in the air.

Welcome aboard.  If you have questions you will certainly find the answers here!

This weekend took me on an hour drive out to a house that was going up for auction.  The lady wanted to sell a garage full of furniture and initially talked to a guy I know that lives a couple hours away.(Networking scored me this find)

My challenge to you is this.  Watch the video here http://www.theartofpicking.com/video.html.  What would you pay for such a haul?  What would you sell it for?  I'll give the person closest to my actually numbers a bumper sticker.  The stickers are up on my blog, I can't figure out how to link them here.

Game on!

I bought that plastic box of jewelry, 3 bags with 100 rings, 2 china hutches, and a couple other pieces of furniture for $200.

The best part is there is a lot more, I just have to wade through all the junk to get it out.  :-\

Alloro, sure when you are buying a unit you have no idea who owns it, but I guess I'm speaking from a different viewpoint, as I buy the majority of my goods by other means where I usually deal with people directly.

To me, whether you are buying and selling, you get what you give.  I give deals to people every day. In fact, I donate a lot of items each month. I feel blessed to be able to do the things I do and hope that by "paying it forward" I can sleep a little better at night knowing I helped someone out.

I have seen businesses come and go in my area because they forget one very important fact. Business is about people.  When you determine how you are going to diversify your marketing mix, you will find People at the top of the five most important avenues for marketing.  In fact, I talk about how to network and the marketing mix quite a bit in my book, that's how important I feel it is to doing business successfully.

Matches, you make a good point.  Like our mommas say, when you give respect you get respect.  Your life, and your business, are all a part of who you are and reflect each other in every decision you make.

I watched on video on youtube of GC. He began talking about how you have to hustle to get by.  This, to me, is completely wrong and tells me what type of person he is.

Picking isn't about 'hustling' someone out of their money or items.  Picking is about having fun, meeting new people, learning about new things, and becoming a better person through trial and error.  The people you meet are selling their items because they are in a time of need. Maybe they couldn't make a payment, found themselves in trouble with  the law, had a loved one die.  This isn't about stealing from the poor to make yourself rich...this is about helping other people, and maybe learning something about yourself in the process.

Just my belief I guess...

Flea Markets / Re: Black Friday Results??

Friday was pretty bad here as well. Most people wake up early and hit the major retail stores. I know there is a big national push for the "Small Busines Saturdays" deal, but we had a normal day (not a normal Saturday) today.

Usually this is one of the slowest times of the year. December and July.

This last weekend I bought a crapload of jewelry from a hoarder's house. I have been in a few houses, but never one like this. Needless to say I bought some "costume" jewelry. Took it home, did a video on it. Later I went through it a little better. After a trip to the jeweler I found around $500 worth of gold, diamonds, sapphires and opals.

Great weekend overall!

I have a bunch of pictures, video, and a better story on my blog if you are interested in seeing those.

Thank you, I did one each year and had a lot of fun presenting it to the kids when they graduated.
