General Storage Auction Talk / Re: How many units do you buy a month?
« on: March 12, 2014, 05:32:22 PM »
On average 1 to 2 units a month. Sometimes more depending on the size. I tend to buy larger units so i can only handle a few a month. To fill in I go to the monthly auction barn.
I think last January 2013 was my biggest month with 7 total. I won 5 at a silent auction and ended up with two more during the month.

Travis I can see the confusion as I have always heard it called blow. Rhymes with snow but really would not like to see that all over the road. It is crazy enough when a produce truck turns over. All of the loons would come out of the woodwork.  :D

Other Forms of Selling / Re: How to Set Up a Facebook Store
« on: March 10, 2014, 05:29:29 PM »
On my Facebook page I post new items at least weekly. I also write a description and the price on most items. I have had many friends see an item and ask me to hold it for them until they can get into the store.
I also have a link to my Etsy page listed with my photo album for the things I post there. That way if someone sees something they like I can run a transaction through Etsy for a sale that may not be local. Etsy charges a .20 listing fee and  3.5% of the sale.

That's why I live on the Central Coast of California. No very often we see the white stuff. People drive way to fast in conditions like that. My life is worth much more than the few extra minutes that you save going to fast in bad weather.

Right back to keep your mouth shut. Leave it to the government to figure out how to take it all.

Flea Markets / Re: Flea Market Auction ?

Never seen an auction. One guy here that buys lockers sells until the last half hour than blows out everything he has left for a dollar each. Whatever is left when he is done goes to donation and he starts new next week.

Huge rain didn't help keep people away yesterday. The crowd had more newbies than normal. Maybe everyone was hoping the same thing I was.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Deposits taken from attendees?

We have one here that does that. They require $50.00 to get a bid number. You get to keep your number for 6 months than you have to pay again. You also have to give your drivers license to them for the auction.
These guys have many facilities over in the valley which is at least a two hour drive for me and I never go. They only have one facility here on the coast so my $50.00 is only good for one auction at a time. Not really fond of their auction style either as they pull everything out of the unit and auction it by the piece. It takes all day to sell 10 units. I don't go very often to this one.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Auction Scene #2....February, 2014

Auction today was wet, windy and miserable. All conditions that would lead you to believe few would show. NOT!

38 numbers were handed out for 12 units. Half decent and half crap. Prices were high as there were so many newbies.
I did score the second unit for $120. Two nice older dressers, 4 oak dinning chairs, a vintage headboard that I will make into a bench and a few odds and ends. Should make me a couple hundred dollars. All in all not to bad of a day for me. Several other regulars were quite disgusted by how many people turned out. We kinda all figured that the newbies would be discouraged by the rain.

I'm hoping this huge storm in Cali has a big effect tomorrow. This is always the best sale for me and they are doing the auction rain, hail or hurricane.

This is what worries me about using online auction sites. So far I have only won one unit online but it was at a facility that used to do live auctions and the manager has always been very honest. I have contemplated bidding on a few units that were 60 or so miles away but have never had any dealings with the facility. Unless I can get a unit for a screaming deal I don't think I would even try.

Not so fast... http://www.sfgate.com/business/networth/article/Couple-s-gold-discovery-will-be-taxed-at-top-5271261.php
Of course the government has to get their part!

Does this mean that half of what I make off of a unit should go to the government? I paid for it but it is found treasures. Blurry lines anyone?

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Personal items
« on: February 24, 2014, 04:06:18 PM »
Thanks guys for the responses. In my area I am one of the few that return personals. I feel that taking the time to return personal things is good karma. There have been a few times that the managers have asked that I not return things for one reason or another but I do return unless asked not to.

General Storage Auction Talk / Personal items

How do you handle personal items and what do you consider personal?

I normally take pictures, social security cards and some mementos back to the facility to return to the owner. Most mail gets thrown away. I have taken back a box that was saved baby items though I went through it first. I do take pictures  out of frames if the frames are nice. I feel like if I can make money on the item than I paid for it it is mine to do with what I like.

I know of two occasions that the stuff was given back because the managers made a point to let me know how happy the previous owner was to get their stuff back. It makes me feel like I am doing the right thing.

I have talked to several that say they don't waste their time taking personals back. I was just interested in every ones take on how they deal with this stuff.

Craigslist / Re: cList....is dead!

Craigs is garbage lately for me as well. Kinda like what happened with ebay. There is so much posted it is hard to go through everything if you are just browsing. I have had really great luck with the local facebook buy/sell page and my Etsy page though. It is all about diversifying I guess.
