I found a penny about six months ago, not in a unit, it was in the coin dispenser at Subway and got jammed. It was mis struck...I sold it at my resale store for $8.00...I still think it was a cool find.  :)

General Storage Auction Talk / Deposits taken from attendees?
« on: March 01, 2014, 05:23:35 PM »
I went to an auction yesterday, got there in the nick of time...there was a line of people collecting money from the manager. Those of us who rolled up late asked what was going on. They said when they got there the facility manager collected a $50 deposit from them, when the auctioneer got there he made her give the deposits back. Ive been doing this for 3 years now, have never seen that happen before. Deposits for showing up?

Other Forms of Selling / Re: Has anyone had experience with Worthpoint?

I use it, my sister is a member so I log in with her info so it doesnt cost me anything. I like it. Im not saying its the best or anything like that, but for a quick reference for many items in one place it suits my needs....I probably would pay for it if I had to (although Im not sure what the monthly fee is, maybe I wouldnt, lol) I would miss that app if it was gone tomorrow.

The "Other" Job / Business Consultant
« on: February 08, 2014, 07:33:12 PM »
My day job is a business consultant for a restaurant franchise. I evaluate 35 stores a month and help franchisees. I have been managing restaurants for 25 years.  I now own my second resale store. ( the first one I closed 9 years ago, it was a children's resale store.) My store now is a resale store of all things, except clothes. I mainly have furniture, household stuff, collectibles, etc...what ever I think I can resell. My daughter works here during the day while I do my day job. I work at the store on the weekends. I go to auctions and shop around the other job, I make my own schedule, to a certain extent. I tend to look for vintage dishes and glassware when I am picking in thrift stores, that is fun for me. Some days I wish I could quit my day job and focus on just this, but that is what is paying my bills, so onward I trudge....

Hi!
I guess you can call me a lurker here. I've been registered for over a year and a half, and only two posts so far! I own a resale store. I use to have a childrens resale store 13 years ago, only for 4 years, when restaurant management duties called louder.( I still work as a business consultant to the #1 franchise in the world)
I love buying and reselling! I have been going to auctions for about 3 years now. I also go to yard sales, thrift stores and where ever I can get product. ( I even score alot in a Big Lots dumpster!)
I come to this site to get ideas and see what others in the same boat are doing. I should participate more in discussions, but I generally find myself entertained by everyone else!
My brother in law and I started the store as partners, but he bailed on it in September. We had "creative differences"
My daughter works here during the day now while I work my other job. I am lucky because I make my own schedule and go to 35 different restaurants a month so I can hit the occasional auction along the way. I havent got much lately, the units have been awful looking, or if they do look good, everyone and their mother wants it. I seem to get the little clean ones others may not want. They don't cost much, but the profits aren't big either.
Before I opened the store I was having yard sales at my house. I did well, $8,000 in 8 yard sales. I didnt have any last year because of my partnership with my brother in law...I did all the work and he got 50% of the profits. This year I am going to have a few, try to move the stuff that has been in the store for a while.
Well, thats my story and why I am here. I really enjoy this forum and I will try participating more!

I have had good luck with picking vintage Pyrex and Corning ware, I feel like I have an eye for the cookware of yesteryear people want now.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Dumpster Diving
« on: December 27, 2013, 09:03:42 PM »
I've been dumpster diving at one particular dumpster now for about 5 years. It is at a Big Lots. I check it when I go to the bank. I have scored a lot in that dumpster! A $350.00 gazebo (missing 2 parts the company sent me for free.) We have used it for 3 summers now. Lots of small appliances and such ..paper shredders, radios, vacuums, a weed whacker, a fake fireplace(sold it for $150, it was in a cherry cabinet), a microwave, toys, one year I got about 60 rolls of Christmas wrapping paper, household decorations and much more! Overall I have made out well. Some things need minor repairs, a few things didn't work out... I haven't been able to go lately because I changed locations of my day job. I also own a resale store, so I was able to sell a lot there, and at yard sales. I love the thrill of finding stuff! I believe many of the stuff was returned for whatever reason and they just toss it. Anyways, that"s my dumpster diving experience!
