General Storage Auction Talk / Re: You might be a hoarder if....
« on: October 24, 2013, 07:49:21 PM »
You might be a hoarder if you are embarrassed when your friends want to stop by because they will see all the piles of stuff in your dining room and think you are a...well...a hoarder.

However, you are not a hoarder if you can prove to those same friends that the piles of stuff they see in your dining room today are not the same piles of stuff they saw the last time they visited.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Buying locker from locker renter
« on: October 21, 2013, 09:40:03 AM »
I've bought lockers from their owners twice. The benefit is you generally get to look much closer, look in boxes etc. On the first one it was a family with grandma's stuff. They had tried to sell out of the unit, garage sale style a couple times but it was packed really tight and they had only made back a couple feet. I think it was a 10x15. Tons of boxes all marked with tempting things. Paid $900. Got past the packed to the ceiling boxes to find tons of broken furniture. After costs, made maybe $600 profit. Lots of work, had to really make an effort to make a profit. Not a very good experience. On the second one, about the same size, paid $400. At initial viewing the owner kept pointing out items he was keeping. There was a $600 coffee maker in sight. He kept saying how valuable it was. Told him to get his "I'm keeping that" stuff out before we would pay. Came back to find coffee maker gone. Told him we wanted it or deal's off. He brought it back. Paid him and started to clean out locker. He stayed and watched and kissed all his "beautiful things" goodbye. Seriously! He called us several times over the next few weeks to ask if we had found certain things he wanted to have back. A chef knife, a drawing, a gold and ruby ring. Found the chef knife, nice but had a nick in the blade (gave it back to him). Didn't find the drawing, found the ring but had already sold it before he asked about so we told him we didn't find it. We ended up getting a little over $500 for the coffee maker on EBAY.  Overall, made $1700 profit on that one. Good money, awkward experience.

My advice about buying from owners...if they say they have been selling stuff you can be sure they sold the good stuff, and if they seem attached to their stuff make sure they leave before you start emptying the locker.

eBay / Re: Got a bad feedback from international buyer
« on: October 17, 2013, 10:11:01 AM »
Husband called EBAY and did get them to agree to remove the feedback after reviewing the messages. Unfortunately I wasn't there at the time and it was my account so they told him to have me call to make sure it was ok. I haven't gotten around to it yet but it's on my to do list, haha. Kinda funny that they want me to verify it though, who wouldn't want bad feedback removed?

eBay / Re: Ebay insurance

Just a follow up, I filed my claim with ShipCover on the 11th (very easy to do) and they paid me within 3 days. Got a claim form from the post office to try to get the shipping back and haven't gotten around to filling it out yet but from what I am hearing I shouldn't hold my breath.

So, apparently Ebay suggests that you contact a buyer about bad feedback to try to resolve it and get him to reverse it so we did. Mostly he said we didn't respond when he said he had paid and to change the amount on the customs form. He's right that we didn't respond to it but it didn't really ask for a response. Then we pointed out that it is illegal to lie on the customs forms. His response was: Your federal government doenst even work at the moment haha! Almost forgot: From my two adopted graves of two fallen US soldiers in WW2, They asked me to thank you and your goverment for closing down the cemetery...

That was just one of several messages back and forth but I found it amusing. We asked him about wanting to cheat his government by shorting them on customs fees and he said it was just faster if it's listed as under $20.00 and nothing to do with the money. Yeah, sure. I've read his feedback left for others and he's left bad feedback over customs fees before. That's actually one of the things I check when a foreigner asks to bid.  He made it very clear that he won't change the feedback. Didn't really expect him too.

I think it is an outside company that EBAY has just contracted with. I don't see a dropdown button to change the shipping to USPS

eBay / Got a bad feedback from international buyer
« on: October 12, 2013, 10:00:17 AM »
Very frustrating. I always list US only but of course the foreigners occasionally bid anyway. This guy won an item and he's in the Netherlands. He emails a request for cheapest shipping.  I invoice him Priority Mail International shipping cost since it includes tracking and he pays. Next he emails me to put $20.00 as total on customs form. Item sold for $80.00. I put $80.00 on the customs form. Actually I didn't put anything, EBAY put $80.00 because it is done automatically and I'm not going to commit fraud by changing it. Anyway, he gave me bad feedback saying I don't read my emails. Ugh, so annoying. I "reported" it to EBAY that the guy gave me bad feedback because I wouldn't break the law for him. Doubt they will remove the feedback but you never know.

eBay / Re: China set
« on: October 11, 2013, 07:13:51 PM »
I've sold a few sets of china on Ebay. They definitely don't go for very much. I agree with listing the individuals. Also, packing and shipping china is a b**ch. Also if there are any pieces with chips just throw them away. Even tiny chips. Just not worth it.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: What's your local auction scene like?
« on: October 11, 2013, 09:26:53 AM »
California, Central Coast / Northern California areas. Usually 25-45 in attendance, about 10 regular buyers. We all know each other and when the door rolls up you know pretty much who will bid on it based on contents. Several can be counted on to bid up to a few thousand without hesitation if the unit looks good.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Why do you buy auction lockers ?

I could say to make money but the reality is we love the treasure hunt. The money is just an added bonus.

Always take the truck so we can bring home at least part of a unit then return later with a trailer if needed.

Only when it is far from home, like more than an hour away.

eBay / Ebay insurance
« on: October 09, 2013, 07:19:41 PM »
Maybe everybody already knows this but apparently I don't read the fine print...just found out that when you ship USPS and print your shipping from EBAY and pay for insurance you are not getting insurance from the post office. Here I've been trying to track down a package I shipped out on 9/10 (yeah, the post office lost it, grrrr) and the post office told me I didn't purchase insurance. I said I did and have the receipt to prove it. This is were I finally read the fine print. The insurance I purchased is ShipCover through EBAY and not USPS insurance. Not sure if this is good news or bad news yet. I get to file my claim on the 11th to hopefully get my money back. I refunded the buyer a couple days ago. She was very nice about the whole thing and even gave me good feedback. So apparently ShipCover will reimburse me the cost of the item ($330.00) but not the shipping ($50.00ish). I'm filling out a claim form with the post office to get my shipping cost back. Seems reasonable that they shouldn't get to keep money for a service they obviously did not provide.  My post office seems to think I will get it but we shall see....Anybody ever deal with ShipCover? Or USPS lost package shipping cost reimbursement?

Other Forms of Selling / Selling at auction houses
« on: October 09, 2013, 09:18:38 AM »
I have a few nearby auction houses that I buy and occasionally sell at. After recently buying a huge estate I am looking for ways to sell some items. For the last month or so I have noticed that the auction houses are not getting many buyers and as a result stuff is selling dirt cheap. This is a good thing when I am buying but at the moment I'm more interested in selling. Has anyone else noticed the lack of buyers at auction houses lately?

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: Anyone seen a fight at an auction?

Never a physical fight but on three occasions a very heated verbal altercation between auctioneer and buyers. Same auctioneer, three different occasions, three different buyers.
