General Storage Auction Talk / How much time to clean out a locker ?
« on: November 29, 2012, 09:53:27 AM »
If you are a newcomer to auctions this is one thing that is a real concern, especially if you buy multiple lockers at one or more locations.

What is the "norm" where you buy?  24 hours, 48 hours, etc.

Old-timers will have good working relationships with facilities that will expand that to a week or more...care to share how you swing that?

Storage Facilities / No children at storage auctions?
« on: November 29, 2012, 09:51:05 AM »
Now that the crowds have dwindled (relatively speaking) I am seeing fewer moms pushing strollers through the hallways and taking up space at the front of the locker.

For me this is a bonus and makes sense, but of course there are age and behavioral exceptions...it is the problem ones we want to go away.

Additionally, there are a FEW facilities in my area that don't allow children at all. What is your experience with this "rule" .... is it increasing?

There will probably be a half dozen to dozen responses to this thread while of the remaining 2690 members some 100 to 200 views will take place, but it's worth a shot. No need to tell how much you profited on the purchase.

As to starting a thread about the LEAST you have paid, that's probably a moot point as some of us have taken one or more for FREE.

Anyway, I think the most I have paid is $3,500 and that was for a 10 x 30 packed.

With thanks to Tom Litton (an auctioneer who recently went to that great storage facility in the sky  :) ) for this list.

Add to it if you like in subsequent posts.

*********

I have developed a list of original Redneck jokes about storage auctions.

1. "If your storage unit looks like this, (pointing to a junky locker), you might be a Red Neck!"

2. "If you do your Christmas shopping at storage auctions, you might be a Red Neck!"

3. "If you attend storage auctions just to buy your stuff back, you might be a Red Neck!"

4. "If you look at storage auction ads just to see if your in there, you might be a Red Neck!"

5. "If the auctioneer asks to see your ID and you show him your belt buckle, you might be a Red Neck!"

6. "If you attend storage auctions just to find a new 8 track tape player, you might be a Red Neck!"

7. "If you buy a toilet brush to use as a back scratcher at an auction, you might be a Red Neck!"

8. "If you bid five dollars on a unit with a cable spool in it so you can use it as a coffee table, you might be a Red Neck!"

9. "If you go to storage auctions just to check out the hot women, you might be a Red Neck!"

10. "If the auctioneer says "Sold to bubba for two hundred dollars" and four bidders begin to fight, you might be a Red Neck!"

Craigslist / Re: Are CL buyers really nuts or what?
« on: November 29, 2012, 09:21:34 AM »
Four months since the last nutty CList post, so here's another one.

I have a sort of specialty item on Clist and do well with this type and save some bucks by not listing them on eBay.
I am selling it for $400 on Clist.

Guy calls me from Los Angeles area (400 plus miles away) and talks for quite a while about it. Doesn't quite want to trust me by sending a postal money order and says he would be willing to drive up to get it in cental California.

I tried to talk him out of it thinking there has to be one of these in LA somewhere, but he wants this particular one and won't be swayed.

So he calls back a few hours later and says he will be coming up today, Nov 29, 2012.

It's an 800 mile (plus) round trip and at least 6 to 7 hours to drive it (one way) depending on traffic, weather, how tired you get driving a monotonous I-5.

Expense at 20 mpg (generous estimate) and $3.55 or more per gallon would be approximately $142.  Combine that with 12 to 14 hours of driving (and maybe a motel for overnight) and this truly qualifies....

..... Clist buyers are nuts !

Edit:

Guy made the trip, laid 4 Benjamins in my hand and turned around and went back. Said he would make it home by dinner and that the only problem on the road up was in Los Angeles..... Ya think !

I don't speak Spanish yet...

You're from Texas and don't speak Spanish ?  Get with the programa !

Surely you have heard "Ropa, Ropa, Ropa!" more than once in you selling days.

Stories about Storage Auctions / What's your worst score ?
« on: November 29, 2012, 09:05:56 AM »
This has been done before, but here it is again just like the "What's your best score?" has been done before.

I've bought enough lockers that the details start to blur except for the super ones, but I do remember early on (nine years ago) I bought a 5 x 10 with all boxes and what looked like a massage table. Those tables usually go for around $200 plus depending on model, condition, etc and I was happy to pay $240 for the locker.

Boxes were all clothes (and not good ones) and the massage table was just one of those fold out beds (like for camping, 3 fold types that sell for about $50 or so).

I think I lost $200 on that locker as I donated most of it not wanting to deal with "Ropa, Ropa, Ropa !"

Went to three of about 5 close auctions yesterday, Nov 28 and they were basically a bust for anyone except the newbies. Prices were not unreasonable but quality was marginal at best. Newbies are still learning that just because you CAN buy it (you have the cash) doesn't mean you SHOULD buy it.

At one place two lockers at opposite ends of the hall were each opened to speed up the process.  After looking at the 2nd locker and all of us going out into the 'street' one fellow went back down to the first locker for a 2nd look.

While he was doing that the auctioneer stressed about FIVE times that he was selling the 2nd locker first (even though it had been opened 2nd) as it was the cheesy, clothes all over the floor crap we often see.  So, he's auctioning it and he's getting ready to holler SOLD at the $25 mark when the late looker runs down the hallway shouting "wait, wait" and erupts from the hallway door to ask "Which locker are you doing?"

Auctioneer tells him LOUDLY and SARCASTICALLY it is the clothes locker. Can't blame the auctioneer for this attitude..blame the newbie who isn't paying attention.

****

As the newbie is walking past me I asked him "Did you really think the other locker you were looking at would sell for $25?"

His response "Well, I had to ask."   So, he has guts enough to stand beside me even though I had just put him down, and asks me "What do you think the good one will go for?"

I told him between $500 and $700.  It went for $450.  It was a good box locker and I should have bid on it, but it would have gone up to $600 plus and I wasn't willing to go there...not to mention it was pouring rain !

Oh well, there are always more auctions, more lockers.

Laws about Storage Auctions / Re: California Storage Auction Laws
« on: November 29, 2012, 07:59:22 AM »
And one of these days you're going to stand up to him, right? ;)

Already have. The further reality is that this business is a two-way street. We need the auctioneers (and facilities) for goods and they need us as buyers.

Even the dumbest of auctioneers know the difference between a regular who has been doing it for years (and spends money wisely) and a newbie who either doesn't spend at all or goes hog wild (once). Over the long haul the regular will feed more cash into the system and the auctioneer's pocket.

This guy further shows his incompetence; here's just one way:  he gives the obiligatory explanation of the rules at the begining of the auction, but then if someone comes in later (maybe after the first unit is sold), he does it again, and again, etc. Very annoying, and despite the fact he may be protecting the company, I think he's just plain dumb. None of the more experienced auctioneers do this, even ones from his own company. He's been auctioneering for about 2 years now.

A California "auctioneer" who was a LOCK CUTTER before transitioning into his new profession has announced several times that "Everyone has to sign in. IT'S THE LAW !"

I'm guessing the reality is he likes to show the sheets to his boss to show what a great "draw" he (the former lock cutter) is for bringing in the bucks.

The further reality is that this fellow is as well-liked as that witch in the broom factory in the auto insurance ad on tv.   smile.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: $10,000 Storage Unit?
« on: November 27, 2012, 09:52:32 PM »

I'm wondering, have any of you ever made a $10,000 profit on a storage unit or even anywhere close to that amount?

Nope; 3K profit maybe 10 times; 1K profit maybe 20; etc, etc

Where are you located that it's raining so hard? Good luck with the picking even in the rain.

It's not yet, but Sacramento (and yes Yuba City) will get hit hard .... or so "they" say.

Tell us about the best unit you ever bought, what was in it and how much you made.

Been there, done this, but I'll do it again.  Bought a Pod for $2500. It had a Honda Quad which I sold for $2500. Really a nice one but I had no need for it...when out in nature I'm hiking, not riding a gas buggy.

This Pod also had a 22 caliber target pistol and other stuff, but he quad was the biggie. Profit on the unit was $1600.

There were others too, but those can wait.
