The "Other" Job / Re: Farm hand
« on: October 11, 2011, 01:44:45 PM »
Well after I quit my job as a milker I went and got a job cleaning out forclosers. Talked to the boss about keeping items. he said as long as I split the money on them theres no problem. Well today got a chest/bench, 2 chairs, old antique tins, mini shop vac, name brand clothes ( mudd, and others) tuns of toys few antique gas cans and tuns of other stuff. Im lookin at easily making a few hundred off these items in the city. Plus I still get paid. Cant beat double dippin in the book and free gas for jobs. Still lookin for auctions but waiting on some paychecks for the big lkrs.

Hey Terrorbow, that is one of the many things I want to get into. Think you can get some info from your boss on the process of finding eviction/forclosure homes to clean and fix?

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: How appropriate

I have yet to buy me a loser locker where I didnt at least make my money back. However, I also have not been back out in awhile. I am hoping that with this break I am taking things will settle down quite a bit. I am not expecting to go back to the way it was before the shows, I dont think that will ever happen. But I am hoping enough people look at it as Get Rich Quick Scheme that YOU SHOULD AVOID. I have noticed that a major part of the new people coming out think it as a Get Rich Quick Scheme, until they realize how much work really is involved. Most people seeing this will back out after they lose X amount of money. And that is what I am waiting for.

wow, with just reading what you wrote, and not seeing it for myself, it seems to me some of those lockers still went higher than what they would of been before the shows.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Is this a joke or is it true!

I hope that is a joke. That is someones luggage and for the most part its the Airports fault the luggage gets lost. Not the person's that it belongs to.

Sorry Travis, I been away for awhile, re-grouping myself and taking some leisure time with the kids while things are still over priced and less lockers going up.

I would like to get on those types of containers. Will have to look into any that are along the Texas Coast Line. Most likely Houston and Galveston area. Hey Travis have you seen these up that way?

The Lounge / Re: Need a little advice

Tricky tricky tricky. There has to be trust, and something drawn out that says he has this responsibility, and you have this responsibility. However before you get into all that, each one of those ideas yall have talked about, you need to sit down and come up with the pros and cons to each. The one that has the  most pros is the one I would go with. It seems to me that for the most part, all of these are a different job function.

However I will give this extra advice on the last one. Were you will be going to auctions and making bids, and he wants you to do that for him too. I would scratch that out. Remember there are ways to offset the odds with this industry. But still can be a gamble. Say you bid on a locker that to you can make $800. So you bid it up to $450 and get it. His $450 mind you. And after all said and done, everything is sorted, and you only manage to make $175 on it all. Now you got to explain to him where the other $275 is at. Well it jsut was not there, you made a wrong calculation, you read the locker wrong, what you thought you saw was in no shape to make you the money you thought you could make. Then what?

I say this cause my brother in law approached me with the same deal. And after weighing all this out, and told him sorry I cant do it. Just what if I use your money to get a locker and its a bust, then im lost out and so are you. Just not worth it.

Cut the ends off all the cords, throw them in a tub, and when you get it full take it to the scrap yard and make a few bucks on it.  All the cords and cables you end up with in lockers add up pretty fast.....I'm pretty sure I'm doing over 100 a month just in cords and cables.

As far as the vhs....keep one of the many outdated and obsolete video cameras you're bound to find and make some home porn!  Or not.....LOL!  I donate the commercially recorded movies to Goodwill and the home recordings and blanks typically go in the trash.

I myself sell the cords for 50 cents to a dollar depending on the length and quality. As far as the tapes, I just donate them all unless I see one I want to keep to convert to digital over my computer and put it on a dvd.

BTW, there is money in doing that as well. But do not get caught pirating movies, rules still apply on that one.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Here is a dumb question......

Man jrossjr79 you got it going on with your get rid of pile here is an idea for the tires.

http://wuvie.net/tireplanter.htm

My Grandmother had a few in her yard from a distance they looked like cast iron... :)

That is a good way to do it, Not sure how well they will sell, but it is worth a shot. I still have one tire left.

Really it sickens you?? If you read my posts.....I am doing the exact same thing with my inventory as you are. I just happen to live in the greenest city in the US and they don't believe in waste.

P.S. the guy buying cooking oil probably buys it for a bio-diesel ran car.......also popular in my city.

As said I am not trying to offend you. But if you notice my first part of my rant, you would see that you also need to think before you bid. It has been stated that you have gotten 5 lockers, yet only two of those lockers had good stuff in it. The other 3 just trash. This makes me believe one of two things.
1. You are bidding just for the sake of bidding and dont really know what you are bidding on.
2. You dont see all the value that is in your lockers. (And yes I know I read where you do see value).

I do not know what your complete inventory is, so I cant decide which one it is for your circumstances.

Oh and thanks on the tip on the cooking oil, you are probable right on that one.
