Weird & Wacky Finds / Re: My unusual Urn story
« on: June 12, 2013, 02:09:27 PM »
I learned a lot from this. Like did you know that it is illegal to transport ashes across state lines? UPS and Fedx will not ship ashes. So he went US mail. They require that an urn be shipped in a wood or metal box first class mail. It cost me around $30.00 to send him but hey I made and am still making great money off of his stuff.

I have a facebook page for my store that I link with Craigslist. I also belong to a group called Central Coast Man Stuff Exchange. Men only stuff. It is great for car parts and such. I haven't found any other good facebook pages to sell on in my are yet but I keep looking.

Weird & Wacky Finds / My unusual Urn story
« on: June 11, 2013, 01:30:01 PM »
I have been told by the old timers may times that if you do this long enough you will eventually find an Urn. Well this is the story of my first one.
The unit was a huge 10X30 full of stuff. It was a great unit. As we are going through it in a box full of sea shells we find Dr Paul. Ugh... I set him on my desk for the time being and say I will get back to this problem later. I totally believe in karma so throwing him out is not an option.
Several days later while going through the last of the boxes that are all paperwork I come across a folder marked will. Turns out Dr Paul has the deed to his family plot in Tennessee.
Hum... I call the cemetary and find out that he has paid for everything including his headstone that is already set. The lady asks me to send him to her and she will make sure he goes into his plot. She also asked me to write a letter telling how he came to me as no one was ever going to believe her story. Dr Paul is now resting peacfully in his rightful place. Now how come his son who owned the unit couldn't have taken care of this? Oh well I feel good about taking the time and being respectful even though I never knew this person. Good Karma.  :)

I know this is a touchy one but for me no kids under say 12 at the auction. School is out and on Friday we had the little girls. There are at least five of them when school is out. Between the age of I'm guessing 5 and 7. They run around and knock into you playing tag up and down crowed halls, they are very noisy and this time one fell down and scraped her knee. You would have thought she lost her leg. He dad picked her up and stood there letting her scream throught two units. The auctioneer in my opinion should have asked him to leave.
I have a kid but I would have never dreamed of taking him somewhere like that and not make him behave. It is a huge distraction and several people were complaining that they couldn't hear the auctioneer. In my opinion a storage auction is not the place for little kids.

The Treasure Chest / Re: Old Marbles!!
« on: June 11, 2013, 12:30:28 PM »
From family talk my great grandmother was the best marble player ever. I still have her marbles, my dads marbles, my marbles and my son added some of his own to the collection. I could never part with them. My dad still brings my son marbles every time he finds one and my son is 17. One day I hope he passes them down to his kids.

Friday was my first auction in a while. Two facilities 20 units adveritsed. Total ended up being 5. Unit 1 was a 10X25 showing a couple of antique items but was a huge mess. Went for $250.00. Next unit was a 5X6 with three suitcases, one duffel bag and a trash bag. Suitcases were middle of the road type. Went for $85.00.
Next facility third unit turned out to be a surrender not a lien. Mostly broken furniture and appliances. Went for $1.00. Fourth unit was a 10X10 stuffed to the ceiling with crap. I know this mans mother and he is a dumpster diver so whoever paid the $375.00 for this unit will probibly regret it. Fifth unit was a 10X20 packed with clothes and really old mircrowaves plural. Went for $475.00.
Crowd was regular for the times. Alot of people I recognized and several that I had never seen before. 28 bid numbers were handed. None of the units went to regulars.
I would have went on the very first unit had I not had a vacation scheduled for the weekend. There was no way I was going to get it empty by the facility deadline and they are sticklers. The mortor and pestal sitting at the very front would have paid for the unit. Oh well on to the next one.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Picks that haven't worked out?

I picked up a beautiful walnut and black veener armoire that was made in the 60's. Thought it would be a quick sale. It is still sitting in the shop six months later. I have been thinking about donating it just to get it out of here.

Watch batteries are super cheap at Harbor Freight. I bought 30 assorted for $5.00. Watches sell for more if they are working.

Stories about Storage Auctions / Re: my craziest storage story by far

Not in California and I carry one everywhere I go. Had a very bad reaction to pepper spray years ago. Someone sprayed it in a store and it went throught the ventalition system. I was sick for a week. I have a tazer in my drawer at the store and one in my purse. Much safer for me than the spray.

Wall of leftovers last time here went for around $75.00
Boat motor on the coast $250.00
I wouldn't pay over $50.00 but probably sold for more like $200.00
Princess House- If the crazy lady that comes over here was there $200.00. I have yet to win any glass wear at one of those auctions. She seems to have an unlimited supply of money and she must be able to make alot more money than I can on it.

I Scored A Unit Today!!

Let me say that there are no auctions in the forseeable future and this was not an auction.
I had an old family friend stop by today and we got to talking. He has a storage unit he has been paying $100.00 a month for to store some furniture. I know this man well and he has really nice stuff so I asked him if he would like to get rid of some of it. Come to find out he has rented this unit for the last 25 years.  :-\ I asked him if what was in the unit was worth the $30,000.00 he had spent over those years. Of corse the answer was NO.
I have not finaled a deal with him but put to him in that way he now really wants to get rid of his stuff. Gonig to see what he has next week. He will most likely want to just give it to me but I will have to make sure he gets something out of it.
It still blows me away how many people don't look at the cost as a total. I hear "it only costs me this much a month". Really?

May has been another total dud. Everything in my area this month has been canceled. I'm am assuming that people are paying up their units becauce of tax returns. June looks good but I am worried that the lack of units for sale the last two months is going to cause a major driving up on prices. We shall see I guess.
On the up side I have seen an increase in good donations this month. Picking has also been good this month.
Happy hunting everyone.

I bought a used car back in 2004. Have driven it almost everyday since. Last month I was cleaning it out (I have done this at least once a week since I bought it) I saw something that didn't look right under the amp on the passenger side. Fished out a gold and diamond pinky ring. Score for me! Couldn't believe it had been in there for almost 10 years and I hadn't found it sooner.

To long of a drive for me... Unless there is a race. Headed that direction this weekend. For racing, not sales. I did bid on an online auction last week that was two hours away. I was kind of glad I didn't win. It would have been a long day for loading.
