Happy Thanksgiving! Remember all the people, events and things you are thankful for, and don't forget to be a source of thanks for those less fortunate!

And this is why online storage auctions have such a major hurdle.. One misrepresentation and buyers will run from the scene!

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Confessions of a Newbie
« on: November 26, 2013, 10:08:17 PM »
Eh, I got the book for free in a box of books that were sitting outside my door before I opened.. I priced at $100 expecting to take $75ish.. A quick $60 in my pocket seemed better than holding out for the extra $15.

New to Storage Auctions? / Re: Confessions of a Newbie

What storage wars and the other shows don't tell you is that it costs money to get things appraised, in most cases. The way I like to appraise things is to make friends with local auctioneers. Maybe list a few items in their auctions to get the business relationship going. This way, when you get something needing an appraisal, you can always ask their opinion. Some items that you get an opinion on, you may want to list in an auction anyway..

I think, however, there is enough information online to get enough of an idea to put a price on things. In my shop, I have a big sign that says "We Welcome All Offers" because I know that I may be shooting the moon on some items. If someone has more knowledge than me, and can educate me on an item or genre, I may just accept their offer!

A good example of this is the book "The Little Prince". I have a first edition copy with mistranslations. The book was originally written in French and translated to English with errors. I have one of these priced at $100. However someone came into the shop who is a book guy. He said that while yes, this is a first edition with mistranslations, the books that are worth much more have a different color cover. Mine is a cream, the salmon covers go for much more. He pulled out his iPad and showed me examples. He said that my book, in fair condition brings $40. My book he said was better than that. So he offered me $60 and I took it.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Christmas Presents From Storage Units

We have access to the most unique gifts being storage unit buyers. I always gift from my inventory when I can. This year is no different!

I don't even count Big Steve as a part of the cast, even though he's been on quite a few shows in a row. I don't "like" him either, but he's a good agitator.. I understand why he's there. Mike, I think, was cast to be that agitator, but he's too much of a sweetheart to really piss anyone off. I was glad to see John Luke ban him from that auction. Wish more auctioneers locally did that.

The main problem I see with the cast of Storage Wars demanding more money is they are expendable. Think of Survivor, there's a new cast every season. Storage wars isn't like the show "Friends" where the public builds up an affection for the stars and allows the stars to demand more money each year.

I disagree. I think that people do root for their favorites, follow them on twitter and facebook. There are so many ways to get involved with a reality TV show that takes it beyond the show. If you want to follow Jarrod and Brandi or Barry or Ricky and Bubba, etc. etc. etc. You can see what they're up to outside of the show because they all legitimately have businesses outside of the TV show.

So I would argue that people get even closer to the characters than a typical sitcom. With each departure of cast, I would think that the show loses a segment of their viewers after a couple of weeks. To use the original show as an example, Rene and Ivy are no replacement for Dave Hester. I would imagine that the ratings hit the show is seeing is based upon the fact, at least partly, that Dave isn't there. Once the public sees that Barry isn't coming back, that show might end up dying.

I think Texas has done the best job of replacing cast member(s). Moe's out, he was eccentric but boring. To me Ricky and Bubba hold the show together. Once they go, if they go, that show is done.

New York has the most solid cast.. I think that each buyer, or team of buyers, holds their own with the fans. It'll be interesting to see what happens when the cast starts changing there..

I don't know why that stuff is there to begin with. Same goes for food. There's never been a functioning kitchen in any locker I've seen. Why the hell would you store your rice and beans there?

AB-SO-LUTE-LY. My wife comes in every weekend and "fixes" what I've done. Especially in retail, things have to be "shoppable". Clean lines, related items together, small stuff in front, big stuff in back.. These are all things I don't think of. I'm more of a, "if it fits on the table, it goes on the table" kind of guy.

How were you able to get the story?  Did they call you out of the blue or did you lobby some?  It really is a great piece of free advertising. :)

A customer visited my shop and fell in love with the stuff. He coined the phrase I now use "anti-boutique". He called the local paper and told them that they have to check us out, that we were going old school, and the rest was history! I think he had a reporter friend at the paper..

Craigslist / Re: Craigslist Sales Slowing

Quite the contrary. I renewed all my ads last night and got 8-9 replies.

What I have noticed is that the craigslist email system has been glitchy. Not sending emails in a timely fashion.

I haven't seen anything to really go crazy about in black Friday sales. Not enough to get up early/leave my Thanksgiving dinner over.

The painting is Rene Brochard.. This could pay for your room ten fold! A French Canadian artist, which would be why the title is in French. This is an absolute score, if you can authenticate it. His popular works sell for about $1,000-$2,500. Signature looks to be right. But you'd be better to take it to a local expert. I'm not sure how his art does in Texas, but the oil rig theme may increase the value of the art.
