What's it Worth?? / Re: USPS Priority Boxes

Definitely no resale value since as you said they are free at the post office. Probably even rules against it.

To Calcoastgal, if your Grandpa came to one of my garage sales and offered cash for everything leftover I would take him up on it too! I always wait way too long to have a garage sale and have so much tonnage that there is no way to sell it all even though it's all good sellable stuff. Since I have no emotional attachment I always just post a CL add and give it all away (usually it's a couple truckloads of stuff). I've tried selling it in bulk like all for $150 or whatever with pictures but after an hour of two change it to free because I just want it gone.

That would be awesome! Nope I've never been to a facility that offers that. I'm usually happy to go to a facility with e-waste. An accessible dumpster would be a dream.

Actually 8 hours isn't really that far....got any pics? Just how big is this house? How much ton-age are we talking about?

I would be totally in if it wasn't an 8 hour drive for me. Maybe call any auction houses in your area and see if their auctioneer wants to do it. I've seen the auctioneers near me throw together an estate auction really quickly and you end up with an empty house in a matter of hours. Love those! Wish you were closer.

General Storage Auction Talk / Re: Storage doors that won't open.
« on: August 25, 2013, 09:37:37 AM »
Went to one that wouldn't open, at least not easily. Large facility, an outside unit that is accessible 24/7. First problem was it had a lock on it that wasn't put on by the facility. Auctioneer got power tool and cut lock off. Latch won't move. More tools and lots of brute force (several buyers joined in) and finally managed to get it open. Destroyed the latch in the process. On the inside a clamp was attached to the inside of the latch to prevent it from opening. Further back there was a big board on the wall covering a big hole that led to the unit next door. Still lots of stuff in the unit but obviously they had been removing stuff through the hole. Owners of the neighboring unit were there the whole time and had been moving stuff from their unit into yet another unit when we arrived. They were actually making a scene and yelling at the auctioneer and some of the buyers during the whole process. We were out of our usual area so we didn't know anybody but these people seemed to all know each other. Once the unit was opened and breach to the next unit discovered the people yelling seemed to disappear. It was all pretty entertaining. The auctioneer did not sell the unit.

Storage Facilities / Re: Storage facility policies
« on: August 23, 2013, 09:26:23 AM »
I have no complaint about paying a cleaning deposit anywhere. I always get it back. I think it is good for the facility to have just a little guaranty that the locker is going to get cleaned out and without a deposit they probably get lots of trash left behind that they would then have to get rid of. Further more if letting them hold $100 of your cash for a day or two while you clean out the unit is going to break you, you probably have no business buying the unit in the first place.

Stores / Re: Do you offer returns?
« on: August 20, 2013, 09:12:48 AM »
On Ebay I list everything with no returns. That said, if I get any type of complaint or problem I usually let them return it anyway. Doesn't happen much. On Craigslist stuff I will always let someone return something if there is something wrong with it but not if they just changed their mind. Again doesn't happen much. I am in a pretty small town so it's worth it to keep buyers happy.

Picker's Paradise / Re: Auction Houses ?
« on: August 16, 2013, 09:20:51 AM »
I buy and sell at auction houses. Pretty much my last resort for selling.  I sell the stuff that I can't sell anywhere else. Stuff that is too big or fragile to ship and hasn't gotten a bite on craigslist. Gotta watch the commissions though because some auction houses are really expensive. The one near me that gets the highest prices also charges 50% for items that sell from $0-$150 so not really worth it in the long run. I do have one that will try to sell almost anything and I have done well with stuff that I would otherwise have taken to the good will or sold at a garage sale for almost nothing.

eBay / Re: How many item listings to you do in a regular months time?
« on: August 16, 2013, 08:54:47 AM »
I know a person who has a large amount of stuff listed all the time like Movieman described. Not 5000 but still a huge amount and they do roll over and relist so once listed they stay there. Tons of items at 9.99 or 4.99 or even 99 cents. Ugh, I do not see the point in listing cheap crap. The time and effort to list, keep track of, store and eventually ship those items just does not make sense to me. He pays for a large storage warehouse and a couple employees. May work for some people but definitely not my goal.

I usually have around 45-75 listings up at any one time. Well actually we are a couple with two accounts so double that. Sometimes I may go on a relisting old stuff binge and end up with a lot more. Depends on if EBAY throws out a 'list as much as you want for 7 days' offer or whatever.

Welcome

I personally haven't found all that many but I know a buyer (he buys way more units than me) that uses them to ship stuff. He literally wallpapers his packages with postage stamps. I think he said you can put them all over the top and sides but not the bottom.  He says the employees at his post office know him and are used to it. They don't even count them up. They just ask him how much they add up to. Too funny!

Last year I attended one with 200 units. It was a moving and storage place that had changed owners. They were all wooden crates. It took 2 days to get through them all. They all had last names and dates on them. All were dated from 1975 to 1995ish. Lots of fun. Bought 4 or 5 of them from the late 1970's. Fun stuff.
